117,873 applicants this year (elk & antelope) this year vs. 120,392 last year. 2% drop is in the noise. Certainly not 25% or so as early rumors suggested. I bet it would have been a higher drop if not for the bogus points system.......
What the numbers don't show there are the number of people who put in for just a bonus point rather than the actual draw. I talked to many people who said they wanted to keep their loyalty point so rather than just not put in at all they put in for a bonus point only because of the economy.
"For all the speculators, here are the TRUE #s on AZ apps. There are a mere few percentage points differences from 2008 and 2009 with slight increases in BP only apps.
I would bet the majority of the 2000 less apps are non res. too.If it take a non res 7 yrs to draw at $160 a yr for a late season tag thats approx. $1700 dollars for a tag.I'm talking elk of course.Only 10% of the tags go to nons.at 50% harvest rate.only a small % rate on trophy animals.so for a diy non res to put out say $3000 to take a 200" elk and wait 8 yrs is not a deal.Arizona is a great state to hunt elk but theres a lot of propaganda out there too.You might not even kill an elk too after all that.
The app. rejection number is criminal. Put the stuff online before someone kills themselves over a rejected application.
I don't know how they look at themselves in the mirror.
I always send mine in before the period expires for them to give me a call. However, things happen and I hate to hear about someone missing out because the paper application (circa 1954) was rejected.
