Bad Economy Didn't Help AZ Odds

117,873 applicants this year (elk & antelope) this year vs. 120,392 last year. 2% drop is in the noise. Certainly not 25% or so as early rumors suggested. I bet it would have been a higher drop if not for the bogus points system.......

I wonder how many more applicants just bought a point this year compared to years past.

What the numbers don't show there are the number of people who put in for just a bonus point rather than the actual draw. I talked to many people who said they wanted to keep their loyalty point so rather than just not put in at all they put in for a bonus point only because of the economy.

I'd agree that the number of actual "applicants" is probably much lower. I know a lot of guys that went points only.

Tony had posted the application, rejection amd BP only numbers here in the AZ forum.

http://www.monstermuleys.info/dcforum/DCForumID33/500.html

"For all the speculators, here are the TRUE #s on AZ apps. There are a mere few percentage points differences from 2008 and 2009 with slight increases in BP only apps.

2008
Elk apps -- 81,212
Rejected -- 3,765
BPs only -- 6,262

2009
Elk apps -- 79,056
Rejected -- 3,536
BPs only -- 7,174

2008
Pronghorn apps -- 22,696
Rejected -- 998
BPs only -- 5,024

2009
Pronghorn apps -- 20,883
Rejected -- 941
BPs only -- 5,876

Total Apps for both species

2008 -- 119,957
2009 -- 117,873

Does rejected mean they filled out their Apps wrong? Do they miss out on a Bonus point? I never thought the number would be that high. Sucks for them.

Sucks for them, good news for the rest of us..

Didn't help though, lady friend and I went zero for four...

Oh well, next year!

I would bet the majority of the 2000 less apps are non res. too.If it take a non res 7 yrs to draw at $160 a yr for a late season tag thats approx. $1700 dollars for a tag.I'm talking elk of course.Only 10% of the tags go to nons.at 50% harvest rate.only a small % rate on trophy animals.so for a diy non res to put out say $3000 to take a 200" elk and wait 8 yrs is not a deal.Arizona is a great state to hunt elk but theres a lot of propaganda out there too.You might not even kill an elk too after all that.

Still a drop in apps, not as much as I would have thought though.

Maybe Cabela's got their apps in this year...:)

The app. rejection number is criminal. Put the stuff online before someone kills themselves over a rejected application.

I don't know how they look at themselves in the mirror.

I always send mine in before the period expires for them to give me a call. However, things happen and I hate to hear about someone missing out because the paper application (circa 1954) was rejected.
