Well fellas I have heard from two of the guys who took my Janaury AZ NR Hunter Education class here in Kingman that drew elk tags this year!

Guess taking the class is worth it after all...

One guy got a Unit 10 archery elk, the other, a first time applicant, drew a 6A general rifle tag!

For those who want a deer or sheep tag, and don't have Hunter Ed in AZ, my next class is April 18 here in Kingman.

You must register with Dave Williams G&F in Phoenix. E-mail me at [email protected] for details.

Good luck!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-31-09 AT 09:23PM (MST)[p]Hey Don
I'm going to take the hunters ed course in az sooner or later.Do you think the 1 extra pt.helped in the draw odds that much or did the luck rub off of you.Wasnt sure what class to take in what town but if your that lucky I'll make sure your my instructor.Every little bit helps!!!

The bonus pts are usually updated in late fall.I think?

Patients is a hunters best asset.

Don- can you please help me with a stats question?

what does it take to get a late 12AW or 13 deer tag as a resident. I am at 7 pts, not sure if I should hold out or just go enjoy a hunt.

Thanks

Mark

Ok, I'll try and answer each question..

Bonus point are usually updated after the first hunt. Those folks that took the Hunter Ed class in January, I assure you that there was the extra point on your application for this (elk/antelope) draw.

It will show up later on though on your record.

Now that extra point is why those folks draw, I assure you it's not me!

Here is how lucky I am am. I didn't draw any AZ tags so far this year, and my last AZ tag was about 5 years ago. I drew a muzzleloader bull (early) tag on Camp Navajo, but signed it over to a neat young man from Payson AZ who was in the Arizona Hunt of A Lifetime program.

Mark, there is an outfit called Hunterstailhead.com that lists all the odds of drawing a tag, regardless of method of take, and if you are a resident or non-resident.

The site is free and the info looks good.

Good luck!

Don

As a resident, you can draw any hunt with no points. 20% go to the top pool, 80% go to everyone slse. It's onlty the hunts that are assured (so heavily weighted nonresident at the max points)to fill the nonresident quots in the 20% max points round that tke nonresidents a certain number of points to draw. So if the nonresident applicants are around 50% or more at the top pool, the nonresident quota will likely be filled before the 80% round.

Mark,
You don't want to mess with those stinky mule deer.

Whitetail all the way.
NB

Mark:

FYI, I apply for Unit 13B and have just 10 bonus points.

I do have the breakdown on how many residents have a certain number of points, and I know with 10, that I am in the "game" for those tags left after the 20% draw is done.

As a resident, you'll always have a "chance" whereas non-residents with less than max points are definitely out of the "game" for those seeking premium deer tags in units 12A, 13A and 13B.

Its about the luck of the draw and statistical probabilities.

I've got a hunter (resident) this year who drew a general rifle Unit 18B antelope tag AND a Unit 23N early rifle bull tag! He drew both with 10 bonus points.

Me? I'll keep applying for that once-in-a-lifetime tag. After my next Strip tag, win, loose or tie,I'm done applying there, will be one of the "faithful" who will apply for the early Kaibab tags.

Will leave the Strip tags for those who have never drawn...and hopefully keep assisting those lucky ones who draw.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-02-09 AT 06:56PM (MST)[p]Don, your draw thoughts jive with mine. I'm a NR top pool guy. I'm holding out for 13B rifle or bust. If I ever get it, I'll forever do Kaibab early first, and maybe a coues or something second.

We added another 17 resident Hunter Ed Bonus Points to the pile this morning and we will add another 35 tomorrow afternoon; then, after April 18th, we're going to add probably 30 or so NR Hunter Ed BPs to the system. If you're a NR applicant and you do not have the AZ Hunter Ed BP...well...you're getting left in the dust.

There just might still be a spot or two open for our 4-18-09 class in Kingman. Make the call and get that point, you will not regret it.

Good Luck!

Jim

And please inform all those non-residents that need to take the Az class they may need to take another class in there resident State before they Az will accept you to take the class. Please let everyone know the If they passed there resident class before this year______.You will need to take another class before you can take the Az class and please let all of us know the reasoning for this.
Wouldn't taking the new up-dated class in Az fulfill the requirements to be a safe hunter?I have talked to many applicants wanting to take your class but this is holding alot of us back from signing up.
I will most likely take another class in Utah before signing up for the class in Jan?But please explain the reasoning behind this.I hear the same thing everytime it's Bull$#|^.
Thanks

WARBIRDUM,

Don Martin has previously posted here on MM, and on other hunting related websites, the requirements you refer to; remember, he and the other members of his hunter education staff do not create any of the "rules" concerning the NR AZ Hunter Ed Class, we simply teach it.

The current requirements for the one day (12 HR) NR AZ Hunter Ed Class is that the applicant have a current hunter education certificate from their home state that had been issued in or since 1980. A copy of that certificate (or card) needs to be faxed to the Phoenix-area AZGFD headquarters to the Hunter Education Coordinator, David Williams. He will then add the NR to the class list assuming there are available seats.

The reason the NR needs to have a hunter ed card from their home state is that AZ hunter ed is quite a bit longer than a 12 hour class. The class we completed yesterday was a combo class that included archery and muzzleloader instruction and was 35 hours in duration including a rather grueling field day exercise. The class NRs take is a supplemental class and not to be confused with our full-feature hunter education class.

Lots of things change over a 29 year period of time, including game laws, rules, & regulations and even the manner in which the North American model of wildlife management & conservation is taught in hunter education classrooms across the country. I'm confident that's why the AZGFD Hunter Education Branch only accepts prior hunter ed certification all the way back to 1980.

I'm sure you are an experienced outdoorsman and have had hunter education/hunter safety training at one time or another. If that certification was post 1980, fax in your card and come out for the class! If you don't have a card, or completed the class before 1980, just attend your state's next local hunter ed class, get your new card and get over here for the one day class. Your other alternative is to take AZ's online hunter ed course and then come here to participate in a field day exercise to secure your permanent AZ Hunter Education Bonus Point.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck in the upcoming drawings and we'd be happy to have you attend one of our classes!

Jim

Well said Jim!

I'll just add that after almost every NR class we teach one or two people seem to get a coveted tag. And the classes range from 20-45 people.

Is it just pure luck and/or coincidence? I don't know...

But for whatever reason they have for taking the class they like to go hunting, and that's what we all have in common.

We've got over 30 pre-registered for the next NR Hunter Ed class on April 18.

Those folks obviously see the value in taking the one-day class.

If I had the chance to up my draw odds, even a little, by taking a class in the other states I apply for, I'd do it in a minute...

Guess I had better sign up for a class again in my home State it was around 1975?If I do this could be in the max point pool for deer and have 14 pts for elk in 2010.
Thanks for giving me the reason for needing to take a class again in my home State.Guess no matter how much experience hunters think they have most likely need a refresher coarse there is nothing more important than being safe in the field.

If you don't have, or want to take, your states hunter ed class you can take the AZ online class and then travel to AZ and take the field day.

Either way you're going to AZ. Don doesn't make the rules, no reason to jump on a guy taking time to help us out.

I wasnt jumping on anyone if your talking to me ? Im excited to come to Az. !!

Wapiti,
Nobody is jumping on Don or Jim many including myself wanted to know the reasoning for the Az game and fish making it mandatory to re-take a class if anyone had taken the class prior to 1980.Now that I have the answer it makes more sense. Many may not take the class for the hunter ed. point because of this rule guess that's there choice.Again I can't find anywhere where I was jumping Don.
Don teaches the class he does not make the rules.Has anyone taken the on-line Az. class?before taking the one day class. How long does the on-line class take?just weighing my options before signing up for a class in my home State.
Thanks

sorry guys, I mis read the posts.

I took the online class last year. skimmed thru the mtl then took the test and passed. The test is only good for a period of time and I never made it down to the field day so I need to retake the online class.
I think I spent maybe 30 minutes on the whole thing.
Kinda like school, they throw in a few obscure things into the test to see if you read the mtl.
They have a lot of field days but the Phoenix ones fill up fast. You can go to the hunter ed page and there is a section showing the field day schedule.

I took the 1 day class with Don, my friend took the on-line course and the 4 hour class in Pheonix. If I needed to retake in my home state I would look in to that first.
