Ok, this is how it happened. I spotted a group of bucks that were starting to feed out towards an open meadow. I was about 90 yards down wind from them so I felt that my chances were pretty good at getting a shot at them. I worked my way up a tree line to about 50 yards. Once I got to 50 yards I waited and waited for this buck to come out. Before this buck came out a little two point walked out in from of him about 10 to 15 feet in front of him. The little buck looked down the meadow and turned around and walked back into the trees. At this point I thought I was busted. I remained behind a tree just watching and waiting patiently to see what the rest of the deer were going to do. Well the group of bucks stayed in the trees for about 10 minutes feeding and checking their surroundings. Finally they started moving again; they kept feeding out into this meadow. The first buck stepped out about half way, just enough to show me his vitals broadside. I ranged the buck when just his head was showing at 52 yards; I hurried and set my pin at 50 yards, drew back and let it fly. Next thing I hear is a cracking sound. I thought for sure I hit a rock or a stump. Then to the right of me I see a deer running to a small open meadow. I watched this buck jump a bush and trip up in it. I thought for sure it was the buck I shot at. So I watched the direction this buck was going for a minute, and thought to my self that he will be going down soon. So after watching this buck trip in the bush I decided to go look for my arrow. There was no arrow to be found when I first started looking. I looked all over the area for my area and could not find it. After about 20 minutes I decided to look for some blood where I saw the deer trip in the bushes. I searched all over the area where this buck ran and could not find any evidence that I hit that buck. So I decided to go back to where I shot and played everything back in my head. Went up to where the deer was standing and looked right under where the buck?s front leg would have been. Sure enough, I found half of an arrow covered in rich red blood. I new at that point I hit him good. I looked at the tree next to where the deer was standing and saw blood splatter. I proceeded to look for a blood trail and could only follow it for about 5 yards. There was nothing. Well I called up my buddy that was just a ridge over and told him that I hit one. He came over and we both started searching. We decided that we would just start walking in the direction that the deer went and zig zag back and forth until we found something. Well about 40 yards we walked into that small meadow and smelt deer. I didn't really thing anything of it because there were 5 bucks in there earlier. So we kept looking and nothing came up. Again I decided to go back to where I shot and watch it in my head again. This time I remembered that the buck that tripped up in the bushes was the only buck that went down, the rest of the bucks went up higher. So I decided to go about 20 yards higher. I started searching again and once I came to that smaller meadow again I could really smell the deer. I decided to start glassing through this meadow to see if I could see anything. I looked down about 30 yards and saw a big clump of brown. I did a double take and started yelling at the top of my lungs. I found him about 70 yards from where I shot.
When I cut him up to pack out I decided to cut open the rib cage where the arrow entered. Cut it open and I made a perfect heart shot.

After talking with some people I found out that this thing didn't bleed out because he was feeding uphill, so when I hit him all the blood filled the cavity. My arrow hit right behind the shoulder in the crease and exited high about 4 inches below his back.

Great buck and great story, I bet you were really pumped after you found him............ Thanks, Allen Taylor......

That's one fat buck!! Great job!

Man, with all these great bucks getting taken, I'm starting to get twichy! I need to get back out there! Congrats on the great buck! never heard that about the bleeding, when the heart is pumping, it should push blood pretty quick out, but I have seen deer that just didn't bleed out of the wound at all.
