Tag Refund & Dutton Outfitter?

Need some info if any knows. Appears I drew a Dutton tag given the $795 charge on my cc. However, I have a dilemma. My hunting buddy will be unavailable to hunt this year. So I'm mulling a guided hunt. Can anyone recommend some outfitter names for that area excluding Moss. With my luck, I'd shoot an SCI bull that scored 400.5 and would then have to pony up the extra $5000. $10k-$11K isn't in the cards for a guided elk hunt. Second, is it still the case in Utah where you can turn your tag back for a bonus point and if so, how long do you normally have to do so. Thanks...

I'll second Bobcat on this one. You will rue the day....
And...you're a bit hard on Doyle here me thinks. His guys do a great job. Just one man's opinion....

I don't think he bagging on DM just that he can't afford the bonus money for the trophy fee.
Put a ad in the local paper down that way you will get a few local guys that will help ya. They might not be big time name guides but they know where the elk are.

Bess, thanks for the info. I can't seem to come up with anything for AWLB or Punk&Pro. Do you have full names. Thanks. Lowcountry - no knocks on Moss. As noted, I can't swing the extra $5k if the big one stepped out...

You got a point there on the fee unless you have a money tree in your backyard. But keep the tag and go hunting....you won't regret it. Good luck bro!

The way the wildlife board is running the show you will be left with a 300 bull next year. Your friend is up in the night for turning the tag back in!

The pro is the pro on that unit. Stinky will be hunting with the pro this year

You should go and just shoot the bull stinky will be passing up he wants a 700" bull

best of luck boys!!

Archery is a year round commitment!!

I would call Meacham outfitters, they are local guys and have helped kill some awsome bulls in the past. I don't know how thier prices are but that would be my choice in the situation. Don,t turn it back.

I am the infamous Slam'PUNK" that bessy refers too.
We (me and proutdoors) will be virtually living on that godforsaken rockpile they call "Dutton" all summer in search of a few targets for stinkystomper to launch a few missiles at.

Shoot me a PM on what tag you have and your situation, we may or may not be able to help depending on our other booked obligations.

Whatever you do DON'T turn it back in, this could be a smoker year in Utah for some very good bulls and there is ALWAYS someone willing to help put a big stinky on the ground ;-)

Would like to say thanks for all the pm's. I'll be keeping the tag and it looks like I have lot's of calls and research to do in the next few weeks.
Thanks.
Rick

you do not need an outfitter or a partner for that tag. just go hunt and do the research in advance. You will get a lot of help and info if you dig around.

Maybe I missed it. Archery or other?

you may want to give Mclain Mecham from Mecham outfitters a call.He lives in Tropic and has alot of knowledge of that unit.If you are interested let me know and i will give you some information.

Hi Pro! Its been awhile since we last chatted.Just got word that a friend of mine drew a Dutton Muzzleloader tag so i will be down there puttin around. My friend that drew the tag also found a heavy set of sheds about 370-380 with a 13inch H1 measurment so there should be some good bulls runnin around. Are you doing your own guiding? sounds like you got some hunts lined up.Let me know when you will be down there and will have to meet up.

IF you want a good hunt you cant go wrong with a PRO!!!

Mods, please remove post #19. It's blatent plagerism. I don't think you want guys on here lying about sheds coming from bulls that don't even live on that unit. Those sheds were picked up in the San Juan! Get your story straight. The biggest bull ever even seen on the Dutton was a 280 if my memory serves me right!

THIS DUTTON BULL DOESN'T LOOK 280 TO ME!!!

DONT TURN THE TAG INN... You will have a great hunt! With 191 guys down there hunting this year due to our WONDERFUL DWR you will be able to sit on the main road and have bulls being pushed to you all day long. By the time you have the hunters, guides, and all the gronala crunchers looking around all the elk will be running around like crazy!!! No hiking in the thick crap for you!!! Good Luck!!!

Does Utah really get granola crunchers walking around during the elk hunts? Boy am I gonna have a ball. I've always wanted to break a ganola crunchers nose!

He who stomps the greatest stinky wins!

ya man don't worry about to many people there will be 56 guys with rifles in hands on the early hunt, give a couple a couple spots for premium tag holders and also a few SFW tags and it really won't be that bad. Good luck! Maybe 65 guys on the mountain with tags thats alot better than alot of utahs units.

Just for fun how many guys on the mountain does one tag equal?

I'm going to guess that on average one Utah LE elk tag equals 4 guys-the hunter plus 3. Seems like the better LE units equal more "help."

In '08 there were 49 early rifle tags on Dutton, in '09 there will be 58-plus the 5 premium tag holders for 63 hunters. If my average is close that's around 250 guys on the mountain.

Scout hard and shoot first!

HEY Prism!!!

I SPENT THE ENTIRE RIFLE HUNT ON AN LE UNIT!!!

THANK GAWD THERE WAS ONLY LIKE 10 PERMITS AT THE TIME!!!

EACH PERMITEE BROUGHT 5 TO 10 TARDS WITH QUADS WITH THEM!!!

I CAN'T IMAGINE 63 RIFLES + ALL THE OTHER SHADOWS!!!

ITS ABOUT OVER BOYS!!!

YOU WILL SEE IN THE NEAR FUTURE IT WON'T BE FUN ANYMORE!!!

THANK THE GREED OF THE UDWR!!!

Prism is the man! I was referring to the total for the entire unit on LE hunters when I mentioned 191. I was just alittle bitter after having 14 points and once again not drawing my LE elk tag. Prism hit it on the head, scout hard and be greatful you drew the tag and make some incredible memories!

Yeah, just curious as to what kind of numbers you'd guess.

The other hunts (archery, muzzleloader, late) may not be quite as high, but I think that's a fair guess for the early rifle hunts. There's gonna be lots more hoochie mamas sold this year:)

Looks like there's going to be another 6 tags on the late Dutton this year, plus any premium tags left. Another 25 or so guys running around on the late hunt would have defintely made a diff on my hunt last year.

Still gonna be a few big bulls killed, but I don't think the hunts are going to be as enjoyable.

No way would I turn a tag back in. I'd hit it hard and enjoy it while you can-cause I don't think it's going to get any better, I really think we peaked in 2006 statewide for overall numbers of trophy bulls.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-22-09 AT 01:34PM (MST)[p]I figure the each NR will have 4 people total including themselves. By reading hunting illustrated and those magazines it appears residents call every known relative and friend they can find to help. I would imagine that each resident hunter will have around 10 to 20 guys on the mountain. However this will be a way better hunt than I've ever had. I typically see 125 public tags on my nm units with another 300 unit wide landowner tags sold. Thats a total of 425 early bull tags in an area only twice the size of the Dutton. Even with the over crowding I still manage to kill 340 to 370 bulls almost every year by myself. I can only imagine the bull I will get in Utah with what I consider to be such limited numbers of hunters. 65 on the early rifle hunt? That'd be like a dream come true to most any NM hunter. You utards are spoiled.

I believe the other hunts have peaked but not Dutton!!! Dutton is going to peak the first part of November 2009! Rock n Roll and good luck to all you tag holders on the other units!

Triple_BB

I go along with all the others do not turn your tag in!!!!
As far as a guide is concerned I have been hunting Dutton for years and have never needed a guide to find deer or elk. The problem with Dutton is it is mostly roadless and after you get an animal on the ground getting it out to the closest road can be brutal. If you have other friends that like to camp and HIKE with HEAVY loads on there back bring one or more of these friends and you should be just fine.

I forgot to mention who would be going with me to Dutton in November....I was going to go alone you know DIY kind of thing but my friend Tiffany called and she wants to go. I said she could!
49ef7b736869485a.jpg

She should do fine provided the treestand is already setup or the blind is off the side of the trail going to the alfalfa field.

Remember that if you take tiffany you cant shoot unless the elk is less than 100 yards, is not on a ridge line, is not within 100 yards of another elk, and has been standing absolutely still for more than an hour. Oh yeah, only perfectly broadside shots are acceptible. One degree off from broadside in any direction and you MUST do the ethical thing and just let that 900" bull walk!

All i can say is it seems like the dutton is staying pretty strong to me, we have been pulling some decent sheds off of there for the past couple years. I think yak4fish said it, the dutton is extremely roadless, and if a guy will take the time and hike in more than a mile you will have the hunt of your lifetime! i just cant wait to see if i will be joining you or if my wife will be chasing bulls in November on the boulders!

In all honesty bess I think you will get your tag and you will get a gigantic bull. The gila in NM was a great unit until recently. What has happened? I assure you it's not the ungodly amount of hunting pressure. They get slammed every year! Wolves have lived there for 2 solid years now and its very evident the numbers are way down! When utah starts getting massive concentrations of wolves I will agree with you that the glory days are over. Till then, You aint got nothin to worry about. Honest to god bessy! You got 4 to 5 years till the spike monsters being killed take their toll. Do you have enough points to draw by then? I hope you extend an invitation to me when you do draw that tag!

He who stomps the greatest stinky wins!

look at the pumpkin patch in the Unitas during the rifle elk hunt. thats more pressure than any other unit in the state and there are still some BIG bulls there.

UtahElk1,
You ALMOST got it right........I've got a feeling Dutton will peak on Sept. 8th. I'll let you know all about it, or more probably, Stinker will make a huge noise on here before I can get to it; think Yukon Bull Part II. And the best part is, Stinkbug is gonna get his chance to show me if any of that mass he's carrying around under that boy band shirt has any go, or if it's all just show.
This is gonna be a GREAT year!!!!

That mass is gonna let me range twice as far as normal guys like you. Your 20 lb pack slows you to a crawl. I forget I've got a 100lb pack on my back till I get back to the truck and see my reflection in the window! I believe my 100 miles I'll cover a day will give me better odds of finding a big bull than your 1/2 mile you'll cover in that same day.

He who stomps the greatest stinky wins!

HEY Pro???

YOU HEAR THAT???

100 MILES PER DAY!!!

TAKE A LOT OF DEW TO GO A 100 MILES PER DAY,LOL!!!

I've spent quite a bit of time on the Dutton the past couple seasons and can assure you that last year had a fraction of top-end bulls it had the year before. I certainly hope that trend doesn't continue or Dutton could be in serious trouble! I'm not sure if it is the increase in tags, poor antler growth, both..but something weird was going on last year!

One thing you need to realize about the Dutton is that it is mighty open country. Yes, there is a large roadless area but bulls on Dutton are mighty easy to spot from long range...and are extremely vulnerable during the rut/bugling. There is enough country that some of it remains untouched every season and I would expect some of the oversized bulls have learned some of these hide aways.Hopefully Utah figures it out that hunting bulls w/rifle during the peak of the rut is somewhat crazy...especially if the increase in tags continues!

I would venture an educated guess that bulls on Dutton are a lot more vulnerable due to open terrain compared to several of the adjoining areas that have steep country with fairly dense trees.

In regard to finding super sheds on Dutton.....bulls winter on Dutton from the 4 surrounding units so it is hard to say where some of these bulls may be during hunting season?

Oh no, low country deserves no congrats! Go ahead low, tell them how you got that tag! Come on, lets hear it! I'm callin you out on this one buddy!

He who stomps the greatest stinky wins!

ok low! since geologists r sooooooo great I guess that means electrical engineers r scum suckers, and have no loyalty, and don't keep their word? ok I'll kinda keep it cuz I won't flat out say it, but here goes u sorry sob! everyones gonna hate u for this one.

Lowcountryelk aka steve low rent, paid way less than $5,000 for his dutton bow tag! I think that's stealing from wildlife. I can't believe they didn't tell u the reserve wasn't met! Yeah, ur low alright! low rent! now the dutton elk r all gonna starve next year cuz u squeek when u walk. how u gonna sneak up on an elk? they'll hear those butt cheeks squeekin from a mile off. everyone on the dutton is gonna know right where old tight arse is! I think a tag that cheap should get ur huntin priveleges revoked for 5 years. first u draw the beaver bow last year as a non res with 2 points and this year u get a tag around 4 grand for the dutton! opppps! did that slip out of my keyboard? my bad! have a nice day low rent! I'm still a little peeved at u if ya can't tell.
