A man stands near the elk that was one of the animals poached by Ronald Ray Jurin. A California poacher who bagged a monstrous trophy elk in La Grande in September 2006 was sentenced Friday to three years of probation and ordered to pay $50,000 in fines and penalties.

Ronald Ray Jurin, 38, agreed to a lifetime ban on hunting in Oregon, one of 26 states that will honor the ban, according to federal prosecutors in Portland.

Special Agent Jim Stinebaugh of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service investigated the case against Jurin, who acknowledged that in 2006 he illegally hunted three bears before the season began, killed a cow elk without a tag, and used a spotlight to shoot a white-tailed deer with a cross-bow.

Thats how it should be! The rest of us do it legal, we wait year after year for our tags and then we even go home empty handed sometimes because we are legal and ethical.

No jail time? "Lifetime Ban" He didn't have friggin tags in the first place. Whats to stop him next time. A lil time in a cell eating surplus USDA Mystery Meat would do him some good!!!

Love the $50,000.00 though. Wonder how they'll get that from him?? Probably over 20 years.

Another joke of a wildlife violation sentence.

The guy dosen't live in Oregon so why does he care if he cannot hunt there anymore?

He probably made 3 times more than the fine, selling bear gall bladders to limp weenied Asians.

He probably will be poaching again at the first opportunity.
