Pahvant Elk!!

My dad pulled a muzzy tag this year, and we are pretty
excited. Just wondering what you mm guys think of the
unit, and if it still has the potential for a guy to take
a decent bull this september. The reason I ask is cuz there
has not been much talk about the unit lately. So lets hear
what you guys think.

Thanks

I'd say when the auction tags go for $20K - $40+K on the Pahvant and most all others are significantly under that, then it might mean you're onto something, or at least its a good indicator that someone thinks its got pretty good potential. What's that saying...."Money talks and BS walks"? And the muzz hunt is pretty much timed to perfection to boot. I'd say start scouting and getting in good shape.....your Dad is gonna have a great time this fall if he puts in a little bit of time and effort.

Congratulations to your dad. It will be a hunt of a lifetime for all involved. There is plenty of good bulls on that range that anyone would be happy to harvest, especially with a smokepole. Contrary to popular belief, there is not a 400 bull in every drainage. With a little scouting and getting familiar with the unit your hunt will be successful. Let the hunt begin and good luck!

congratulations to your dad . I two feel very fortunate because I drew the Pahvant early rifle tag at the expo this year and it just so happens I was in my waiting period for elk . All that aside I will be happy to pass any info on to you after my hunt that will help you out If I am not mistaken your hunt starts the day after mine ends . I plan on doing a bunch of scouting this summer and fall so who knows maybe we can help each other out . good luck

I have been apart of both rifle hunts and muzzy hunts on the pahvant the last few years with a lot of fun on all of them. From what I have seen with the numbers of big bulls on the unit, they seem to be down some compared to other years or they definately have gotten a lot more elusive and hide a lot better now days.
Cause in years past one heard "pahvant" and automatically thought 400 plus bulls everywhere! Those of us that have hunted there know how hard one has to hunt for one, with that said, that goes for any unit in the state!
Anyways it will be a great experience for anyone with a tag on any of the hunts down there(or any of the LE units)and with early hunt being cut down 2 days this year should make some think on passing bulls that they are contemplating on. Good luck!

they definately have gotten
>a lot more elusive and
>hide a lot better now
>days.

Just wait until all the Spike killers get in there and start balsting away at the herds, those big bulls will disappear.

Blasting away with their Bows and Arrows? All the hunts, but the late rifle will be over by the time the spike hunters get in there. You will have archery hunters in there, but who cares, they are there hunting deer too.
Should be a great hunt, do your homework and things will work out.

Thanks for the comments guys, We live right next to the unit so
we will be spending plenty of time up there scouting over the summer.

Hey DownRange, are you the same DownRange that is on the TU site?

Congrats on the tag! How many points did he have? I put in for the same hunt.
I hope next week I can post the same results. I know it is just a dream, but at least some are coming true.

My dad had 8 points going into the draw. The other thing is that my little bro had 7, and they both put in for that hunt. So I guess it might be my little brother who pulled the tag instead of my dad. We will have to wait until the emails come out, so we can find out for sure wich one of them drew it. Either way we will be hunting big bulls this fall.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-24-09 AT 10:07PM (MST)[p]I'm the same guy here on MM as I am on TU. My brother-in-law landed the late Pahvant tag. We are excited even though things will be a little picked over by then.

You live on the unit Someguy, that bull is as good as dead with you after him!

How many points did he have? I didn't draw with 14. This is the year of the MUZZY IMO. Timing is everything and the timing couldn't be better.

So we got the emails last night, and it turns out my little bro pulled the tag.

Peakfreak- My little brother only had 7 points going into the draw.

I cant imagine what it would be like to be 20 years old, and pull a tag like this.

He is a lucky SOB!!!

I had 13 pts going in and my dad had 14 and we got the big UN's. I thought he was going to have a pretty good chance at pulling the ML tag there this year...I should have known better.
Tell your bro it is his lucky year! Should be a great ML hunt.

Dont spend alot of time and get burned up early! The later in the hunt is awsome. Lots of mountain and yes lots of good bulls still call that mountain home!!!! That tag is by far the best archery elk tag in the state for a great hunt!!!
