Wyoming- Region G deer hunt

I spent the opener and 3 other days glassing, hiking, etc. in Cottonwood Lake area, Little Greys, and even some private areas on the West side of Star Valley, Wyoming and found very few deer. We glassed a ton of country, hiked a lot of miles and found very little to be excited about (with exception to the country). From what I found, the deer were hanging tight. I saw a couple of 20-24" bucks and that was it. One guy I was with settled on a small 4-point. Any suggestions that anyone can provide for this region? My neighbor shot a nice 30" 4-point and said they saw quite a few deer feeding in the high timber. Not the case with us. Any suggestions? I can provide email if needed.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-20-05 AT 09:17PM (MST)[p]I would look for the steepest(cliffs), small, timbered, basin you can find. Sneak in before light and glass. At least when an opportunity presents itself you'll be able to shoot before they get into the timber. You may see more deer glassing the big basins, but there will be other hunters there and you probablly will not get an opportunity before the deer go into the woodwork. I've had success by planning my glassing position in a position to shoot from. This usually means arriving to your overlook before light and slowly/quietly. Early bird gets the worm.

We ran into the same problem in H. We did have some snow but I think all of the bucks we saw pre season were pushed out by archery elk or deer hunters. We got up there to hunt and all.....I mean all of the bucks were gone. Two weeks of preseason scouting some very high country and finding some great bucks went up in smoke. I dont think the snow had any affect on them. There was only a few inches. I do believe there must have been some pressure.

If we do go back in the next few weeks we will be trying a different spot.

We were up there this last weekend as well. Saw a few small bucks. I was actually hunting for a good bull moose. Did you happen to see any in the Little Grey's area? I think we passed your camp, if you were the UT guys that parked right off the little Grey's road and had tents to the north side. Everyone I know that hunts that area hunts high. Got to get way off the road to get anything worth shooting. A lot of road hunters, as you well know from the traffic this last weekend. We saw license plates from CA, Minnesota, Alaska, New York, Utah, Idaho, Florida and New Jersey. Any moose help would be greatly appreciated.

I think the bucks you scouted earlier are still there, they are just nocturnal and in the thick timber.

As far as finding bucks my suggestion would be to wait for the last week of season and go back. You will be amazed at the difference in 1) hunter numbers (won't be as many) and 2) deer behavior. The weather will also start to help.

Good luck.

All the of bigger deer that we saw in Wyoming were about 1500 feet from the tops of the basins. They were definetly not where we expected them to be. I don't know if they moved in response to hunting pressure or weather. What I would recommend is changing elevation until you find the type of deer you are looking for and then concentrating your efforts at that level. Also, look for the small patches of cover that you don't think a deer would use as cover. I have found that they concentrate on these out of the way places when the pressure heats up.

There is nothing wrong with a 24" buck. I got one from the little Greys area a few years back and he is 24"
He is a typical that officially grossed 187 3/8 and netted 184 3/8.

BKhunter,

That probably was us. I appreciate the feedback from all you folks on MM and I'll let you know how the rest of the hunt goes. I'm planning on hitting hard again towards the end of the hunt. Hopefully, it will cool off and there will be more deer activity. I'll do whatever it takes to get a good one on this tag. First time hunting this region but I'm determined to do what it takes to get a slammer.

Aggieman,

I will be up there off and on throughout the next couple weeks for the moose. If I see anything worth going after, I will send you a message. Keep your eyes open for that big bullwinkle for me.

Thanks,
bkhunter

bkhunter,

I'll keep my eyes open for you when I'm up there. Not sure when I will be back out but I'll be sure to keep you posted if I see the big bullwinkle.

Thx,

Spent 11 days in region G.....mostley the afton side of the salt river range. Saw lots of 18-22" bucks and one 28" that we passed on. Should have shot him.........My experience was there was lots of pressure. Lots of horse hunters...and lots of outfitters. We were packed in about 8 miles. I was not disgusted with the hunt, it was still fun....but I think region G trophy quality is definatley down....stopped by the game check staion on greys river road, and only 12 bucks over 26" had come through in the first 6 days. It was the lowest in the last 7 years. Anyone else willing to share their experience this year??

bkhunter....we saw a guy at the check station with a small moose. He said he got it up at the head of Murphy creek..on the greys river side. We also saw a bull moose right along the road off of Dry creek road just south of afton. That bull was not big either but he was only about 4 miles up the road where the road runs by the creek, not far past the forest service sign. We saw cow moose in the bottom of almost every drainage we hunted. hope this helps.

Sounds about the same for us. Ladies and kids everywhere, but no daddies. We saw a small moose up in Murphy Creek and passed him up. Thanks for the info. I live in Pinedale and can make it up there in about an hour fifeteen. Going to wait until the deer hunters are gone before going back. We need a little more weather to get the guys interested in the ladies. Thanks for your info. WIll keep everyone posted when he hits the ground.

We spent 4 days around the Wyoming Peak area and saw very little deer. Only a few small bucks. We did see a ton of moose though.

bkhunter--I'm not sure what area is what for moose hunting but about halfway between the smith's fork turnoff road and Wyoming peak we saw 5 bull moose and 2 were huge. They were right by a ranger station that sits in the middle of a large meadow.

BKhunter,
I was was one of the utah guys that you ran into, my brother is aggieman, I spent the past 2 days up there by myself and saw several moose in the strawberry creek area. Several cows and 2 bulls. 1 good bull that I could tell. the bulls were sure making a lot of noise. I have the GPS coordinate to the canyon if you are interested. I hiked way up in there, but the moose were in the bottom of the canyon about 1 mile in or less.

I do know where 2 monster bucks are in region G. One is a 38" giant 7x8, and the other is no slouch...a 32" 6x6. This is no exaggeration, I know my mule deer. He is the largest buck I have ever seen while hunting. I figure he grosses close to 218!" Our clients had their chances on these 2 bucks, but blew it. I would really like to see this buck on the ground. If you are interested and are willing to pay, I can show you where they are. Or maybe I should just wait and see if I draw a region G tag next year, and I will just go kill him!!

I bow hunted the week before the rifle opener in G and had a great time, lots of bucks and a few nice ones. Way to crunchy to get in close enough but still had a ball. Went back up for the rifle opener and talk about a different amount of crowd!! haha Still got into a basin that had bucks from the week before chasing with the bow.
Two guys on horses where shooting close to 500 yards across in front of me to get the big 4x4 that was with this group of bucks. I was a pinch ahead of them but horses sure can pass a guy up fast! Anyways he shot 13 TIMES!!
When he was reloading after his first 5 shots.... I had the buck dead to rights @ 225 yards but this 'cowboy' had hit the buck in the hind leg and I wasn't going to have a big arguement on the mountain with 2 guys becasue he hit it first even if I dropped it with the 7mag.
He finally killed and it ended up okay... no hassles or anything and I continued on my way up and over into another basin. Had a great time.
Going back up the 5th--8th of Oct. after my Mrs. Utah LE Bull elk hunt is over.
I harvested my 6x6 Wyo. bull elk on the 21st so I'm content.

I may be interested in hiring a guide. I'm going back up there late next week. Give me a call. 805-452-9369

buxnbulls,

I would be interested in more information about the area where you have seen these bucks. Send me an email letting me know when and how much you would charge to guide me to these bucks. I have limited time but would be interested. My email is [email protected]. Send me an email and I can also get you my phone number.

Thx,
Scott
