who do u guys think will benefit the most from the rut this year the muzzy hunters or rifle hunters? in my opinion last year it seemed like the muzzy hunters got to hunt during the peak of the rut.

it depends on which unit.....not all the elk in Utah Rut at the same time.

I think the muzz hunt lines up perfect, but they will be talking during the rifle, and beating the hell out of every tree, pissing all over themselves, wallowing in mud, so the rifle guys should be able to get in range of a few too..

My bet is that the spike hunters-first of Oct. will see the best rutting action Oct 3-15.

As for LE all 3 will stink, it's going to be too hot this year.

I agree with the muzzy opinion and that is 100% why I did not want to waste all my points and decided to wait for the rifle season dates to roll back next year. Good luck to all.

muzzy 1st
rifle 2nd
archers get screwed
as a general rule tne muzzy hunt will be the best hunt to have if you want to hunt the peak but most of us will never know the point system in utah SUCKS

Utah's point system sucks???? For quality, LE elk units, hunter numbers must be pretty low therefore there are not alot of tags. (duh) So how would you dole them out??? One for you, one for us, one for you, etc??

I apply wherever I feel I can eventually draw a great tag and play by whatever rules that state has. My feelings on Utah's system, "It is what it is!!" Don't play if you don't want to.

Who is better off?

The guy who draws a tag, talks with lots of previous hunters, scours maps, scouts and burns boot leather/horse shoes, then hits it like this is his one and only chance. The "peak" of the rut will span longer than 7 days.

The guy who stays out there trying will be better off than the guy who draws and then complains about dates and the rut. JMHO.

+++++1 ktc....
Geeez...wish somebody had told me you can't kill an archery bull unless it is in the rut before I drew my tag? All those bulls I was chasing and seeing must have not got the memo themselves..
ktc is right. If you get a permit, hit it hard and don't worry about someone telling you that you are in the wrong hunt. If you don't think that a bull can be killed during the archery hunt, don't apply for it. And if you do get a tag, get your butt in gear and just go kill a nice bull...don't ##### about the time of the year or the timing of the rut, or the size of the freaking moon. I'd take an archery tag any year if anyone wants to get rid of theirs!!!

I had a ML tag 5 years ago and there wasn't much going on with the rut. The mature bulls moved into the herds the third week of August and by the 20th of Sept the rut was slowing down. Then last year the mature bulls didn't move into the herd until the 17th of Sept and the rut was still going strong the 10th of Oct. That is a 3+ week difference. I wouldn't ever try to play the rut in which tag I drew because it varies so much from year to year and unit to unit. Like KTC and Rick said, get the tag, go hunt as hard as you want, and enjoy it. You may never draw a tag again.......

Well said guys. Too many of us use the rut as an excuse. Just make the best of what you're given on your hunt. The last few years it seems like the rut has been stronger during the archery hunt than the rifle-even with the early dates. It then seems to pick up again during the muzzleloader hunt. Every year and unit can and seems to change some.

Shoot, I've even seen areas within the same unit be night and day different.

The elk have adapted to the ever increasing pressure we put on them.

They seem to rut harder and longer on private than they do on pressured public ground. Just like deer rut earlier, harder, and longer on private vs pressured public ground.

One thing for certain is we always tend to think the grass is greener on the other side of the hill, and 99% of guys with early Ut LE tags are going to complain about the dates of the hunt and weather conditions.

Like I said, it's going to be too hot this year. And all of the spiker shooters are going to see and hear 400inchers all over the mountain bugling like crazy in October.

ya know the funny part about all this talk is, take for instants all these people with 10 11 12 on up to 15 16 points when we started putting in most would be happy just seeing a 6 point bull that would reach 300 points know its all about 350 plus and with the way its being managed now its going to be the same way again and as far as the point thing i feel that all tags should go to the high point holders just like colorado with the way it is now you are never FOR SURE getting a tag

I never wanted a 300" 6 point when I started applying.

What is wrong with 350+? When I started applying they gave less than 500 tags for the so called 300" 6 point. Now, they give 2500 for 350+. What is wrong with that?

the past 2 years on the wasatch it has been the muzzy hunt.I drew this tag in 07 and loved it thats my 2 cents worth

I know the archery is kind of early? I have a friend who has taken many elk with his bow and he has killed most of them on Labor Day. So is the bow hunt really early? Not to him because he kills plenty of elk with a bow the first week of September. I just hope I dont hear people gripe and complain after the bow hunt or even the any weapon. I knew the dates early in January as did everyone else, prior to the application deadline. Dont draw then make excuses and complain. If the any weapon dates trip your trigger then apply for that hunt.

The bowhunt is NOT too early. You have a great opportunity to kill an Elk on wallows, or find a good bull that is looking for cows.
Once those big boys get with cows, things change.

If you do not like the dates, then apply for a different tag. Once you draw the complaining ends.

Here's a vid I took last Oct 1st in the wasatch mountains. The elk were going crazy. At least ten different bulls answering my calls in this particular basin.

Way too many guys get hung up on the rut for sure. There are other ways to kill elk (treestands over water, wallows, ambush feeding or bedding areas, spot and stalk).

It is all about knowing the area/unit you are hunting and scouting your butt off to know where the elk are and what they are doing when you are in the field regardless of what time of year you are hunting.

Best of luck to all this year-should be some good antler growth going on with this wet spring we have had!!
