Tree stand or ground blind?

Ok, if you had to pick one to hunt over water and you need to stay mobile would you pick a tree satnd or a pop-up ground blind?

Kind of hard to be mobile when you're strapped into a tree. Unless you're falling out:)

A tree stand is better for scent control, and a ground blind is better if you have to move fast/quiet. The Double bull type blinds seem to help with some scent control.

Best to have both on the same water and then you can switch things up as needed.

Along the same line of thought, there are definitely times for both.

A light strap on stand can be pretty mobile, but typically if I hang a tree-stand it'll be there for a while--as in weeks...

A pop up blind takes 5 minutes to put away and be on the move again, but one big enough to be comfortable in is going to be tough to carry quietly and agilely, not to mention you'll probably be carrying a stool or chair as well.

Stick with the tree stand. It will help you stay in the tree so you don't screw up the area by getting down and moving through it. Sitting water is a game of patience. Don't mess it up by only being semi committed to it. Sit it out, you won't regret it in the end.

Come on Chad....post the picture of that "tree stand bull" you shot. If you've got the patience, Chad is right. If you find a water hole or a wallow that they are using sit it out. They will show up, but the more you wander around and spread your scent the more you chance ruining that spot.

It's always an adventure!!!

Seriously though. If you are sitting, Do not get down and tromp around the area. Pick a tactic and stick with it. If you want to call/spot and stalk, do it, just not in the same area you intend to sit.

I sat 14 days morning and night before I shot this bull. I could of shot many bulls, but none bigger. There were several bigger bulls that never did water in the daylight. I could not pass this bull up.

If you are sitting, go treestand for sure. IMO.

Good luck!

LAST EDITED ON May-05-09 AT 03:27PM (MST)[p]I prefer the ground blind. I build them out of limbs that I find in the area. I have never packed my double bull in.

I like being able to move if needed, but you cannot argue with Silentstalker's success!

That is one nice, and dirty, Bull. Must have been fun watching him mud up before the shot.

I would go for the tree stand. Elk have pretty good noses. But I would go for a nice big one. Hours and hours in something little you can't move around in gets real uncomfortable.
Buff

Another nice Bull! Is that morning light coming in or afternoon light waning? I'll guess and say morning.

I shot him at night, cleaned him...and then this pic is of him the next morning. Taken when we began the quartering and hauling.

Bowhunt,

Congrats again on a heck of a bull! I agree ground blinds have there place for sure. Most of the spots I sit require a tree stand to keep the scent above the elk when they come in.
