Indian Reservation Elk Tag Raffle Opportunity

I've been asked to help the Rocky Boys Indian Reservation with a raffle they are holding for one elk tag for a non-tribal member. The tag is good for an archery hunt on the reservation during the September rut. They Rocky Boy Reservation is in northern Montana, bordering unit 690, which is one of the top trophy elk units in the state. It is east of the town of Box Elder, and south of Havre. I bowhunted elk one time on the reservation, and saw one of the three biggest bulls I've ever seen in my life, easily a 390 class bull and I think he was bigger than that. I also called in a 6x7 bull that I thought would score well into the 360s that my hunting partner missed with his bow. I've also hunted whitetails on this reservation four different years, and seen 150?+ bucks each time, with some being much bigger. The reservation does have some excellent trophy hunting.

The tribe has donated one non-tribal member tag to the reservation?s archery club to raffle off to raise funds for new archery equipment for tribal youth and to purchase new 3D targets for the club. Normally, a non-tribal member elk tag sells for $3,500.00 plus the cost of guiding by a tribal member, and they only allow a few per year.

These tickets are $20.00 each, or six for $100.00. The archery elk tag includes three days of guiding by a tribal guide, and extra days can be added at the hunters cost, which runs about $180.00 or so per day. The tribal member I've always hunted with has killed a number of bulls in the 320-360 range on the reservation. The deadline until the drawing is short, as I have to mail the tickets back to the reservation at the end of next week, so if you're interested send me a check right away, and I'll get your tickets completed and send the stubs right back to you.

IF INTERESTED, PM ME AND I'LL SEND YOU INFORMATION ON WHO TO MAKE YOUR CHECK OUT TO, AND WHERE TO SEND IT.

The drawing will be held on May 31st, and the winner will be notified by phone and email.

They are not having good success in selling raffle tickets, so I expect the odds of winning this tag to be very good, as raffles go. Feel free to send this around to any of your friends who are interested in archery elk hunting, as I'd like to help the tribe do well on this raffle.

I'm definitely buying some tickets.

The hunt can be for up to a couple weeks if you want. They are throwing in three days of guiding with the tag for whoever wins it. Beyond that, you'd have to arrange with your trible guide for extra days. If it were me, I'd figure on a 10 day hunt, but that's just me. Only a portion of the reservation holds many elk, but I've seen some outstanding bulls there when I've hunted. Unit 690 borders this area, and it is one of the hardest units to draw.

For those buying tickets, be sure to include a note with your name, address, phone number and email address. The tribe will contact the winner via phone and/or email.

How many tickets were printed. that would be the indicator of worst-case odds? Too late to buy a ticket?

I don't know how many tickets were printed, but I did talk to the tribal member who asked me to help out, earlier this morning, and it sounds like they've only sold perhaps a hundred or so tickets.

If anyone is still interested, let me know soon. I'll PM you the contact informatin directly with the tribal member, as I'm sending in my tickets and money I've handled for them day after tomorrow. Just PM me and I'll get right back to you.

I am going to PM you about this, but I thought others might want to know as well. What are the season dates? I have a Rocky Mountain Goat tag that I wouldn't want to overlap.

The archery season dates are generally in mid-September. When I bowhunted elk there, we hunted from the 8th-15th or something like that.

At this point, if you're interested in buying tickets, contact Duane Gopher at 406-352-3018 and he can help you.

They will draw the winning ticket at their 3D shoot on May 31st.

Just a quick note to advise those hunters who sent checks for raffle tickets that I've completed your tickets and am dropping them in the mail in a couple hours.

Thanks for supporting the Rocky Boys archery club, and GOOD LUCK.

I just returned from a two week trip to South Africa, and haven't heard who won. I'll be contacting the tribe on Monday to get the name and town of the winner and will post it on here.

The winner of the elk tag raffle was Chris Faber of Havre, Montana. I'm told he was one of the archers who attended the 3D shoot.
