Who else drew this hunt?
What hunt(bow, rifle, muzzy)?

I've been out there a few times, and killed a cow elk couple years ago.

BWO, how did you do last year?

Slamdunk, I'd like to buy you a beer or two!! even if its a rootbeer! LOL

Tooele, what say you?

Looking for any info and seeing who might be on the mountain this summer scouting. If you have any info you want to share post or PM me.

Cannon

Congrats on your tag Cannon, i sure hope you can find a super good bull.
There were some fantastic bulls taken off the unit last fall, i just hope they didn't get too hammered on the post rut hunts on the Nevada side and excessive reservation tags.
This year should be a good one for antler growth with all the snow and rain this spring, good luck!!! ;-)

slamdunk,
Thanks for the info.
Yes, there were some good bulls taken last year.
Yes, the Rez and the Nevada boys hammer them too.

I'm still happy to have drawn!!!!
I plan to do my best and enjoy the hunt, even if I go home empty handed! I've killed plenty of Elk (OTC Colo)and now this is my chance for a real wallhanger!

If you have any info on winter to summer range, good water, breeding areas, places you would suggest I spend my time. I would like to send you a map to markup or visit with you someday.

As you know, I'm limited by bountries of the Rez and Nev so I have a fairly small(but vertically big)area. I know 90% of the Elk will be on 10% of the mountain I'd like to know your thoughts on the 10% of the mountain I should be checking. Or hot spots outside the Rez.

I also understand you guide for Bucks & Bulls and will be fine without any info if it is a conflict of interest for you.

Please fell free to PM or Email me.

Hello one_dryboot

Mine is the rifle hunt.
My shooting skills far outway my hunting skills!
As a OTC hunter I have adapted to sitting on a vantage point finding a bull and tipping him over. the hardest part is always after pulling the trigger!

Sounds like you been on the mountain!
By the way Nice bull BWO took last year!
It would be nice to have a pack out like Hornyman's great bull!
But, with this being the rifle hunt I'm sure to have a little more elevation change to the truck. LOL

If you have any pointers or info you would like to share I'd be happy to send you a map to markup, just PM me your addy.

PM or email me if you want

The NV boys killed 18 bulls out of the unit that borders the unit 13 were six pointers, 4 five pointers and a 3 pointer. I scouted over there before my hunt but killed my bull in a different unit. Good luck it sure looks like some cool country hopfully someday I'll draw a NR tag there.

Thanks for the info.
The unit was hit hard last year for sure.
I don't know how many tag were let out, but it sounds like it will get hit hard this year also! I hope the quality stays up not only this unit but all of the LE units. Its good to see more tags going to people but it can't be good for the Elk.
Also, I hear there is going to be a spike hunt this year??
Anybody know much about this??

Cannon

Hey cannon-
WhatEVER you do, do NOT take hornymans advise, he'll get you tossed into the Ibapah jail for tresspassing!
And from the pictures one_dryboot has after he got out aint very pretty, them jail guards worked him over but good!!
(i didn't know anyone could broose that easily!)
ROFL!!!!!!!!!!

Cannon, NV is probably going to cut 100 bull tags for the hunt units on the NV side. They are setting the quotas this weekend. But I am sure there will still be around the same number of elk killed in the unit on the border.

To be honest I wouldn't take SLAMs advise.

See those guides think the whole mtn is theirs to hunt. So when he tells you where the boundaries are he's lying. He's not quite sure where they are becuase they don't use them.

LAST EDITED ON May-14-09 AT 01:11PM (MST)[p]OUCH, that cut deep!! Lol

Hey horny, i'm not the one that told you to park at that dead end road and slither underneath the fence in the dark, you did that one on your own!!

And what were you thinking when you thought you could go unseen sliding that big dead bull under that fence, that's where i'm totally mind boggled, wtf?
ROFL!!

I only slipped under the fence becuase the better stream pools are over there.

I needed a bath after a long week up top. :)

Just razzin ya buddy ;-)

You know what the funny thing is Slam?

I could throw a rock and hit the fence from where I ended up shooting my bull.

When I shot him and he took off running I acutally took off running too. I was not going to let him jump the fence only to die 5 yards on the other side. Luckiy he didn't go too far but had my shot placement been off, he very well could have made it no sweat.

Those freaking aniamls, I swear, they know the fence boundary. When they would cross it they would literally stop in their tracks and just light it up. They would strart screaming and fighting and everything else. It was a pretty fun sight to see. The two biggest bulls, I never could catch them on the public side in shooting hours. They would be well over before you could see them, you could hear them but that was it.

Too bad what the Indians are doing out there argggg!

If I remember correctly, Hornyman was bathing in a stream with another man. I dont know all the details nor do i care to but there is a rumor about another movie called "BrokeBack Deep Creek"

Cannon,

Dont listen to all the negative talk about the unit. Im very confident that if you spend a few days scouting befor the hunt, hunt hard and put in the time that you have a very good chance at shooting a 3*4 to 4*5 Raghorn bull.

Thanks for lifting my spirits!! LOL
maybe I should turn the tag back? LOL
Whats wrong with a raghorn? they taste better anyway.
Who wants to hunt hard? I thought all LE were like hunting penned up farm animals, I just want a key to the hayfield!
maybe a salt lick location and a grain bucket.

Actually I've been shocked at the good feed back, remember this is MM.

Later,
Cannon

Easy does her One Dry.

One was in the creek a mile away from the truck while the other took a well deserved nap.

Cannon don't worry about it. There will be good bulls to hunt. THe unit is a hard mean unit and not very accesible to the bigger animals up top.

Worried?? ME!!! NOT
I can't even get this "sh!t-eatin-grin" off my face!
You guy's know what I'm talking about, you had it last year!
Waking up early, can't go to sleep.
Honey-do list is getting longer this year for sure!
Wife keeps adding to the list and I keep reminding her, NO!! LOL

Of course I drew out for my Colorado Bear in Sept also!

I think I might be looking for a job by the end of Nov........

Cannon

Cannon congrats on the tag. It is a fun challenging area to hunt. Listen to Slam, One Dry Boot, and Hornyman. They know the mountain pretty well. Hornyman no one's ever going to let you forget about the man bath. Cannon watch out for Slam and the rez police. They will get you good.

Well,
I went and checked out the jail Looks like the best motel in town.
They said act drunk to check in, then act sober to get out!

Elk are scattered all over the mountain.
Some cows down in the hay fields, some at snow line!
Seen 3 bulls with good thirds and maybe just starting nubs for the dagger, the brow and bez were turned up and looking good!
Most the bulls seen never had the third point yet.
Maybe 60-80 head total, all small groups of 1-3, 6-8 and biggest group was 13
They are enjoying the new grasses and getting fat!

They (BLM?) have cut and munched a bunch of the cedar trees. Some kind of tree muncher! Maybe they had beatles or something? A strip between the mountain and the fields. maybe for better winter grasses? don't know maybe Slam could tell us why.
I've never seen so many ants! they were everywhere. skitters down low and fly's up top. some of the quakies were starting to bud. snow drifts at 9K plus. lower meadows nice and green!

Seen a baby speed goat....................there so cute when their little!

Thanks BWO for the tip!
I really dought I'll see Slam or the Rez police, They should be on the Rez and I will not !! Lots of places out side the Rez to hunt. Everybody just thinks the grass is greener on the other side. Everybody on the Rez might wish they were hunting on the BLM. LOL

I'll call Hornyman and one dry boot some time this week.

Haven't been coming on the site much anymore, too busy fishing/hunting down in mexico. I went out to the deeps last year to hunt deer. Came home early as the quality is way down. I knew that from preseason scouting. Did see some Elk around, Numbers were up quality down, maybe the surplus of elk and the affect on the vegetation is finally catching up to the herd. There are hills out there where it is grazed as bad or worse than too many cattle. I think the explosion of elk has not only affected the overall antler growth, but is devastating the deer herd. My honest opinion is that if I were to hunt Elk out on the deeps and wanted a big one, this would be the last year that I would do it as the Indians appear to be starting an over harvesting of the bulls. So you got lucky to draw this year. Hunt hard, and try to get Slamdunk to tell you where to go. If I were hunting out there I would hunt the fields down by Ibapah opening day after having scouted and patterned the biggest bull out there's escape route. Then be on his escape route as all hell breaks out opening morning. Then have a secondary and teriary area up the Canyons where you can work some nice bulls. There are several canyons that hold some nice bulls every fall. Be careful of the indian reservation as the borders are poorly demarcated. Not sure if anyone knows where the actual border is, but I am sure the indians would say you were on there "Nation" if you are even close, so carry the best map you can find (which will be outdated). So in the end you will still be on there land. Good luck after you scout a while if you still need some help PM me.

Thanks for the help and advice.
I felt lucky to have drawn, and look forward to the hunt.

sounds like your having fun in Mexico!

Just a BTT to see if anybody has been out looking around.
I was out once in june injoying the rain/hail and checking out the country.

CANNON

No squaws! a few bulls.
I know you best have a few spare tires and plenty of fuel to play in that valley for very many days.
Took the old willys up to Oro Del Rey Mine and walked over the saddle to look down into reilly canyon, Fun road!! It looked like mostly four wheelers use the road nowadays. It was raining and snowing going up the switch backs. My father (he's 70) rode up with me and said he'll never need to go back up there!
But, that kind of country is more than I care to tackle hunting solo! When was the fire? anybody know what year?
It is an interesting mountain, lots of granite! steep as he!!, clear running streams, from saltflat to 12K in the blink of an eye!! It has been fun just exploring the mountain. The elk tag is just a good reason to go out there and goof off!
I've packed out lots of Elk and the older I get the less I like it! LOL
Know of any horse packers that retrieve elk from the deeps?

Hope to go at least once in July, but it is a busy month with boating, weddings, birthdays, and work!

One_dry boot,
Where have you been spending your summer?

Slamdunk,
Have you found a bull for stinky on the dutton?

I will be going out there 8/4, helping a friend with his LE Muzzy tag.....Cannon, if you are going out this month, maybe we could go together and I can show you where the bulls were taken last year by BWO, Hornyman.......
