Simple archery cow elk help in Skyline area

I'm taking my son for his first archery experience this year. We are just meat/cow hunters in our family and looking for some help off of Skyline Drive etc.

I have some experience in the Bean Ridge, Granger Ridge, Fish Creek Ridge area. However, it has become much more difficult to track down the herds and get closer to the cows for a kill even 2-3 miles from the road. My last kill was off of Bean Ridge 3 years ago.

Does anyone have some good advice for that area and maybe even some better spots for me to look? We plan on doing our homework and scouting, but just want to know if there are some helpful tips. If you think there are areas beeter than Skyline for a cow and would be willing to share, please feel free. A PM or so would be wonderful.

Thanks in advance,

Porter.

I think that you are in the right area already. We spend a lot of time in that fishcreek drainage as well. If you drop into the drainage from skyline (C-canyon) there are tons of elk in there if you are willing to walk a little. Last year there were a lot of Elk hanging out in the burn at the end of Bean ridge. Many of them were bedding right in the burn and could be easily glassed from across fish creek. This area stays productive, because it is a good hike in and would be some work getting a animal out once you got one.
Anyway, I really don't think you will find an area with any higher elk density numbers than the area you are already in.
PM me if you need more details.
