So heres the deal my mom and I both have fish lake elk tags mine being a archery and hers a rifle so the hunts a re back to back my hunt runs from August 15 - September 11 and her hunt starts September 12-20. So we could end up spending more than a month on the mountain. so my question is what are the rules on camping on a national forest? from my understanding is that once the time limit is up you have to move five miles and that could become a pain. So what do you guys do when your in these situations.

Living The Dream

You go find your local ranger and tell him you are planning on camping in the same spot for a month. Ask him what the total fine for that would be and pay the fine in advance. Then you don't have anything to worry about.

You know, come to think of it that's probably the cheapest and easiest way to get a henries deer as well. Go tell a game warden you are going to poach a trophy deer on the henries and ask him what the consequences would be. Pay the fine, do your jail time and when you get out, Bam free henries deer tag that's good for the entire year! Only draw back is that you would have to take your friends to the local dwr office to view your trophy! ROFL!

If you break camp one day then return back a day later does your time start again.
Is it a 14 day limit or 21 day limit.

LAST EDITED ON May-16-09 AT 08:08PM (MST)[p]The limit is 16 days then you need to move 5 miles. The lady up there at fish lake that tags the trailers will hunt you down and find you !
She takes her job very serious. She dosen't write you tickets ,she just posts warning and a lot of them. Once I moved my trailer to a differnt camp site miles away from where i was parked during the week. She taged me and left a note, I think you have been here a while. When I had only a been in the new spot a couple hours that sunday eve before I left.
If you don't want to get hasseled you can always go to the bowery and get a spot. We always seem to end up there any way for breakfast ,lunch or dinner. Or all of the above.
Sue and her husband are great folks and run the Bowery Haven resort. They fill up fast so you may want to call ahead for a reservation 435 638 1040

That is an understatement. That lady is just a downright BIT**!!!! I do not know a SINGLE person that likes her..I have even heard her colleagues bad mouth the heck out of her....She has already been run out of one district and is about to get run out of this one too!!!!!

I am glad that I own property up there or I am sure I would have had more run ins with her!!!

Hope you guys have a great hunt....

Find out who has mtn grazing permits, ask them if you can piggy back there camp. We have and posted a sign in the window with the permit holders name permit number. Most of the ranchers we have asked have been really cool. Usually buy them dinner or a drink

We have owned that piece of property for about 27 years. My Dad paid about $6000 for it then. We have been offered as much as $100,000 since!!! But there is NO WAY we would ever sell it! It is perfect for us.
We are actually going up there this weekend with a front end loader and doing a BUNCH of work on it and then we are putting a cabin on it this summer. It will be a fun project.

+1 on the Bowery; I heard about the mad FS woman and packed up my camp on Day 14 and stored it at the Bowery. Then I put it right back in the same place, and never saw or heard a word.

But I was a bit back up in the trees....:)
