Someone please help me make some sense of 1600 cow elk tags this year? This has got to be a typo!! I've spent ALOT of time down there, the elk have made a comeback, but i'm sorry you can't hide that many elk! (I'm not seein' them) I drew the cow last year and seen quite a few elk but come on!!! HELP!! I agree that the DWR has made some questionable decisions but this one has gone too far!

These biologists must be including deer, coyotes, cattle and horses in their elk counts. They do the same thing in Montana too.

REMEMBER WHEN THE DWR WIPED FISH LAKE OUT A FEW YEARS BACK???

NICE RECOVERY!!!

I'VE SEEN LOTS OF STUPID STUFF ADDED IN THIS YEAR!!!

ALL FRICKEN MONEY RELATED!!!

Hell dropper, the DWR can't even explain it. There is no reason to give out that many cow tags, hunt spikes and big bulls all on the same unit. This is one that will leave a lot of people scratching their heads and the DWR scratching their nuts again.

It's always an adventure!!!

That will bring the bull to cow ratio back to desired levels. It could also wipe out the herd. Doesn't make a lot of sense.

It wouldn't be the first time the DWR slaughtered the elk on Fish Lake. It was shocking they even admitted they killed the herd there a few years ago.

I have hunted up there my entire life...and I witnessed the GREAT SLAUGHTER of a few years back. It was amazing what they did to the herd the last time they did this.....and now they want to do it again!!!!!! FREAKING AMAZING!

I would really like an explanation from the DWR as to why they think this unit can handle 1600 cows taken from it?????

There are some huge cattle permit allotments up there. I suspect the cattle guys may had something to do with it. Who knows. I will never understand the DWR's reasoning behind this.Never!

There alot of campers up there they might have something to do with it.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

there is alot of mountain bikers up there they might have something to do with it.

There alot of BS up there it might have something to do with it.

There's alot of deer up there and they might have something to do with. LOL

or it could be the DWR is screwing up again.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

Hell, they are trying to get rid of all the Lopes on the other side of the highway from off the Parker.Just as well get rid of the elk.The deer are done for already.Close her off,go fishing for Perch at Fishlake.Whoever comes up with these great ideas should sleep real good a nights and feel good about their brainstorms.WAFJ.My 2 cents worth(ROD)

Yea, here we go again. They finally get the herd back to where it should be and now they want to see if they can wipe it out and build it back up again? Who knows what they are "not" thinking?
What other unit in the state has had so many antlerless animals killed over the last 10 years? None I can think of in Utah..
Like Rod said, they are really cleaning up the antelope and now are going to go after the elk again?
When will it end? I guess after they are all gone?

WELL GUYS!!!

IT AIN'T AN LE UNIT!!!

BUT I'LL PUT MONEY ON IT THEY HAVE SLAUGHTERED MORE COW ELK ON THE SOUTH SLOPE IN THE LAST 12 YEARS THAN ANYWHERE!!!

YA WE PROBABLY HAD SOME EXTRAS!!!

BUT GEEZUS!!!

THE DWR SEE'S ELK ON THE HOOF & THE $$$ SIGNS START ROLLING!!!

CAN ANYBODY SEE THE INCREASES IN THE MONEY MAKIN THIS YEAR???

GOOD GAWD A MIGHTY!!!

WHEN THE GAME HERDS ARE DECIMATED WHERE THE HELL THEY GONNA GET THE MONEY???

ANSWERS PLEASE???

Well Bobcat, I'm sure they can find a way to tax us a little more somewhere....I still had a little left from my last paycheck that I'm sure they would try and take if they knew about it...LOL....
What a joke! I wasn't aware the South Slope had so many antlerless tags. It sucks the way they stress about getting the herd up to carrying capacity and the minute they do, they decide to wipe them out...

What I would love to know is how come the DWR is not accountable to get all the units to objective!

I am no Genius but I can figure out that more cow tags mean lower elk numbers.

If someone hears of their reasoning I would like to hear it.

hey Bobcat. Do they still give out those Dinosaur hunting licenses in Vernal? Maybe the DWR ought to take that over for more revenue. When I was a kid I lived out in the basin and I was pretty dead set on killing me a Triceratops.

Hunting deer and elk in this state will soon be like the Elephant hunts I take my kids on. When my daughter asks what we're hunting I say Elephants. She says there aren't any Elephants here in Central Utah, I just tell here there might be and if we ever run into one we'll at least be ready.

FYI, the population objective for the Fish Lake is 4800 elk, post-season counts show a population of 5100 elk(I am NOT saying the counts are wrong/right). That means the unit is over objective and the DWR is mandated by LAW to keep elk herds at/below population objectives. When you factor in the expected 55 calves per 100 cows being born in the next few weeks, the NEED for a cow harvest is there and warranted IF the population counts are anywhere near accurate. I do hesitate to trust the DWR's counts since they are now admitting the counts on the Boulder were way off in 2008 when compared to counts from flying the unit in 2009. In 2008 the ESTIMATED population was less than 75% of objective, 2009 counts show the herd at/over objective, so take the reported population numbers with a grain of salt. Sadly, the state is bound legally to harvest cows when the DWR numbers reported say the unit is at/over population objectives. This is why I firmly believe mandatory counts conducted by flying should be done EVERY year as opposed to the once every three years practiced now.

These counts they do can be off so far in that area. You have a lot of the Monroe elk that winter off on the Fishlake, and some Boulder elk also move inside the unit boundries during the winter, and I'd bet some Manti elk also. Where the Fishlake has a lot of lower winter areas, I think the numbers get really skewed.
I understand the mandate but to shoot for 1600 elk? You see 200 or 300 animals on most other units, but to go right to 1600 tags seems crazy to me..
But I guess that is why they get paid the big bucks to manage our herds...

The winter counts are always off for the exact reasons Rick posted. As an intern at DWR, we always did our classifications in the winter, and I know for a fact that the herd objectives were based off those counts.

In SL County, the winter herds included animals that had migrated from both Summit and Morgan counties, yet the SL herd was the one allocated the large amount of antlerless tags, early in the year before any of the other herds migrated in. It never made sense to me then, nor does it now.

After spending a fair amount of time on Fishlake last year, I just don't see that many cow tags justified at all. Hell, I barely saw any cows, other than one large maternity herd.

WELL!!!

I WAS ABOUT TO ASK Pro TO CHIME IN!!!

JUDAS FRICKEN PRIEST!!!

2 TO 3 HUNDRED OVER THE OBJECTIVE & THEM MONEY HUNGRY SUM BEACHES ISSUE 1600 TAGS,WTF???

GOOD GAWD A MIGHTY!!!

I'M NO BIOLOGIST & FURTHER MORE I AIN'T GOTTA BE ONE TO SEE THE LIGHT!!!

WHEN THESE BIG COW SLAUGHTERS WERE GOING ON ON THE SOUTH SLOPE I SEEN ALOT OF FLOCK SHOOTIN GOIN ON,MANY MORE COWS KILLED THAN TAGGED,THEY WOULD PUT 0 EFFORT INTO A WOUNDED COW,IT WAS TO EASY TO GO SHOOT ANOTHER ONE IN JANUARY!!!

BETWEEN NEW LE PISSCUTTER HUNTS & COW KILLER HUNTS ADDED THIS YEAR THE QUALITY OF THE LE HUNTS ARE SURE NOT GONNA BE WHAT THEY USED TO BE!!!

WE'VE SEEN IT BEFORE & I GUESS THEY THINK WE WANNA SEE IT AGAIN???

WROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG!!!

You are exactly right Bess...
The "hunters" and I use that term lightly, will find a herd of cows, jump out and shoot, and if nothing falls, shoot again. The year they had the first Fishlake massacre, I think there were as many cows hit and lost when either they figured they missed, or left when they realized they had two or three cows on the ground. At least with a bull tag, you know the animal you are shooting at and don't shoot a 2nd one, but with the antlerless tags, they keep shooting until they see one drop..

We had spike and cow tag one year on the FL and some idiot whacked a big ole bull opening morning. We found a DWR officer and reported it. Helped him load it in the truck. When he told me how many big bulls are killed, intentionally or "acidentally" on these cow and spike elk hunts, I was floored.

Mike

its not going to matter how many people have a tag this year because, when there is 1600+ people pulling up the mountain the elk are going to it the road. ive hunted spikes there before and as soon as they here the first truck pull in they hit the private grounds its almost a proven fact. any way we will se what the DWR says when there is no herd left when its over. weatherbys rule

As I do not agree with the numbers put forth by the DWR, I do not believe it is going to decimate the herds!!

First off- the herds from fishlake are not exclusively "FISHLAKE", these animals move between all adjoining units, and I would be willing to bet that more move weekly than is even realized. Last year for example when the whole "SPIDEY" crase was going on, there was not a night that went by that you would not catch them crossing between monroe and fishlake!! So on and so forth, all the way around the unit!!

Second off- the animals on many of these premiere units need to have a good ass kicking every so often!! If we do not not manage the animals they will start naturally creating their own problems i.e. diseases, over crowding other animals, deformities, low birth weights, early and late rutting due to too much competition, and on and on.

Third off- sometimes the DWR gets ahead of themselves and just want revenue, this particular year they will increase tags for elk to offset loss on the deer tags "again"!!! We as hunters are here to pay those fees, get upset at their decisions, ##### and moan year in and year out, but you know what..... I am a hunter/sportsman and will endure every stupid or great decision they make because I will never quit something that I am completely addicted to!!!

This decision has been made and they/we will have to deal with the precussions, the last time this happened that everyone remembers was a bad shitty deal, yet the herds rebounded better than before the last "Slaughter".

Me personally I wish they would open up a mass slaughter like this on the Oquirrh's the genetics on this mountain have evolved to inbred junk. I also wish they would mix up genes in many of these units!! Isn't this why the dedicated hunter program started??? So that they "Benefit wildlife programs without affecting division funds".

Sounds like a perfect start...........LET'S GET THE DEDICATED HUNTERS OUT THERE COUNTING POST SEASON NUMBERS !!!!!!!

I think that benefits wilflife better than a bunch of DH'S painting fences at hardware ranch, moving furniture, cleaning up bullets at lee kay!!!!

At least this time, they are putting a limit on how many cows can be taken..If you remember the circumstances of the last "slaughter", you were allowed to purchase an antlerless tag for $20, if you had already purchased an over the counter spike tag. And of course every Tom, #####, and Harry bought one since the hunt was the same time as the spike hunt.. Who wouldn't? Anyhow, then you get into the "flock shooting" and the herds were caught no matter which direction they tried to go, it was a real bad deal. About everyone I talked to had seen at least one or two dead cows that had been shot and left.
1600 is quite a few, but at least there is a stopping place...
I agree with Big_uns that it won't decimate the herds, but IMO they should go into this type of a harvest a little slower ..

Where did you come across that number? I am just curious to know the amount of tags issued in other units.
