I know there's a bunch of us banking on some good old nasty weather to drive our dream buck out of the thick timber over the next month or so.

Anybody got any good predictions or good websites, old wives tales, etc????

Looking forward to a cold and snowy October!:)

The weather channel's website just aint cutting it anymore.

PRISM, OUR GROUP HAS NOTICED OVER THE LAST 25 YEARS/ AND MANY WALLHANGERS THAT: IN OUR AREA WE DONT NEED SNOW, WE JUST NEED REALLY COLD WEATHER. WE HAVE KILLED AS MANY BIG BUCKS (28-33.5 INCHES) WITH NO SNOW/ COLD TEMPS SEEM TO WORK THE SAME FOR GREAT HUNTS. HAVE YOU HEARD THIS BEFORE??? GIVE ME YOUR TAKE ON THIS. LEAVING EARLY NOV. THANKS, YD.

What effect does cold weather have on deer? Not snow but temps that dip into the 20's consistently?

I don't know if I'm worried about the bucks showing up because of the cold weather. What I would like to see is some cold weather to get the does grouped up a little better.

October usually seems to be a pretty tuff muley month for myself regardless of the weather or whatever the does are up to.

If I can get some weather for November that will push the does down into the Douglas Fir hillsides, it'll be "go time" next month! The bucks up here will nose their way out of the thick stuff looking for action be it cold or warm. As long as its cold enough that the does are out of the willows, clearcuts, and farms migrating together down to the rivers.

Hawk, cold weather forces the deer to become more active during daylight hours.
There is a nasty looking snow cloud here in the moment. (Sevier co. Ut)
Dutch, are you a highly skilled baiter ?

Oh boy, went out and played in the snow tonight here in nothern Utah. There's about 4" of the white stuff above the house. The does were pretty bunched up and saw one monster Utah 2 point, he's still out there waiting for you!

Ditto on the Utah snow situation, if we have anything even close to what happened last year I hope the DWR will have enough sense to cancel the hunt early. Oh boy, wouldn't that piss the masses off:)

This is my theory on weather and deer migration. Once the high alpine country gets a few good frosts', the vegatation the deer feed on declines in nutritional value. There is usually several miles of thick timber from timber line down to the aspen and oaks. Once it gets cold enough to freeze the high country browse, the deer have to blow through those miles of thick timber inorder to get to the aspen and oak areas which have good browse. I was explaining my theory to a Wildlife Biologist and he said he concurs with this migration theory. I guess what I'm trying to say is, cold weather a lone will began the migration. However, snow really helps, because it makes the animals eaiser to see, and I also believe deer move around more when there is lots of snow so they can maintain there body heat. Yes, I think deer get cold laying in the snow all day.

Just my two cents
Mike

Theory sounds pretty good, but I think it takes a lot for a deer to actually get cold. I base this on the fact there's been times I've seen them lying in snow patches when there was lots of bare ground close by. In fact, the very last year I hunted the "late" muzzleloader season here in Utah, back when it was in November, the only place we were finding any deer was where there was patches of snow on the ground.....

A great weather site we use for our construction company is accuweather.com Go to forecast, and then state, then town, from there you can lookup 15 day forecast. This is the most accurate forecast I have found. HMMM Wyoming: 16th-19th Sunny 63-60 high 32-30 low. I don't want Calif weather for hunting!!
