I haven't seen any pics or stories of archery or muzzy hunts in the Books. I would like to here some of your stories and pics. I am headed out there for the rifle hunt and was wondering what everyone has seen.

I've been on a couple of scouting trips, but they were in September. Have the deer started to migrate to lower ground?

Saw some nice deer each day but tough to get on. Had a chance for a big one and shot the wrong buck. Great country deer seemed scattered but plenty of them.

Were abouts were you hunting? I'm headed out there next weekend for another scouting trip. I have scouted the Seep Ridge area and Wood Canyon, but would like to check out some other areas incase I need a plan B.

I hunted hard but could not get on any of the bigger bucks. I finally came across a nice buck in the oak brush, could only see broad side that he was a 4x5 and heavy. He was about 100 yards out, I took a chance that he had width and shot. He's only 22" wide but real heavy and tall, a 4x5 with eyeguards. I didn't take any pictures until I returned home and they are still in the digital camera. I'll download them to my computer and if someone would like to post a couple for me that would be great. I hunted Seep Ridge, PR Spring Canyon, Main Canyon, Tom Patterson, McCook, Railroad, Cedar Camp and few other places. Hiked around probably more than I should have, but if I spotted something I thought looked good, I went after it. I lost about 10 pounds while out and I ate pretty good too.

Yea, post the pics I would like to see you buck. How was the weather during your hunt? I'm hoping that this cooler weather holds up during the rifle hunt.

It was wet and muddy the first couple days of hunting, then it cleared up and got warm. I left Monday night, don't know if it got wet or snowed on Tuesday like it did hear in Salt Lake City.

Nice buck. Good to see some heavy antlered deer out there again.

Nice buck. I have a rifle tag there this year and id pull the trigger on one like that.

My dad went out there on Monday and didnt see much. He said it was pretty rainy and awfully cloudy. Im a novice hunter, so Im wondering. . . will deer hunker down during this kind of weather more often than on a nice day?

Grizzmoose,

Where about did your dad go? The couple of times I have been out there this year, we saw quite a few deer.

Did your Dad go to the top or the mountain? I did not see near as many deer/bucks during the muzzle loader hunt as my buddies seen during the archery hunt on top. The Biologist I talked too said that the deer begin migrating to lower elevations about the second week of October. It's the second week of October now. I suggest you spend time in the lower elevations during your hunt.

We never spend time at the top. Everytime we go out there its always on the bottom end. We have hunted towards the Colorado end quite a bit out in the sage flats. Im thinking he didnt see much because of the weather.

When he went out the other day he went in on the Bonanza side working his way through Rainbow and Watson. I think he went up towards Atchee Ridge and 3 Mile Canyon. He did try to make it up towards the tower, but because of the weather the roads out there were like driving on snot. After he turned around he went back toward McCook and then over to Seep Ridge, and out through Ouray.

We will defintely spend more time lower. If you can give me any suggestions on areas, Im all ears!
