Hey guys this is my first time on monstermuleys but i was told i could get a lot of info from you if i asked so here it goes....
Somehow i drew the boulder muzz with only 6 pts! I thought that would be a good hunt to put in for and just get a bonus pt because this was not the year i wanted to be hunting elk (wifes pregnant and due close to the hunt). So i am wondering if anybody could give me tips on where to start looking, what to expect (i.e. size of bull to hold out for) etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Probably still one of the top three units in the state, and a great unit for the muzzleloader hunt.

Definitley a tag you'll want to hang on to! I'd think a 350+ bull would be very doable if you're up to it, and I'd guess there will be a handful of monster type bulls running around too.

You're a very lucky guy!

muley,

I have only hunted across the street, but due to tag numbers I think, like Prism, you have one of the best tags in the state, if not the best. If I could hand pick a tag today, it would be Boulder. I would go into it looking for 350+. Your scouting and info you get will help define that number better as the hunt rolls around. Your ability to score on the hoof will be the most important part of what you try to hold out for? I will go out on a limb and say 370+ is doable if things go right?

Good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-04-09 AT 08:26AM (MST)[p]Boulder Mountain is not an easy place to hunt. Thick, rugged and nasty. There are plenty of roads, and that is where everybody that doesent know the country will be. The reason besides limited number of tags this is a good unit is because that mountain is so nasty. You better get down there and find a place to start. There are great bulls killed every year down there I am sure if you put your time in you might get one too. Lucky guy to get it and not even really want it. I've been tryin for 13 years now, maybe i should take your approach. Dont get caught up in all the score crap. It aint as easy as everybody talks up the unit. You are gonna have to really work, just like any other unit. 350+ bulls aint runnin all over the mountain. The east end is thick and steep. The west end is open country and steep and thick. U will get lost on the north and south side since you dont know the area. Get down there good luck with your scoutin, and congrats on the baby, your wife is gonna be jealous of any time you choose to be away from her and your baby, im sure most guys on here will agree to that.

So you're having a baby during the elk rut huh?? I did the same thing and wish her birthday was in May/June instead. Oh well.

I went to Nevada deer huntin when she was 8 days old and heard about til she was 19. Don't think it bothered her near as much as the ex. :)

Anyways, good luck on the hunt and do that tag justice, scout!!

Hey Muley206, You are the first one that I have heard of that drew the boulder mussy other than me. Just out of curioustity where are you from?

Sounds like you got a bit greedy. If you'd have waited two months to start yer own rutt'n, you wouldn't have to worry about the kid thing throwing a wrench in yer hunt plans. Yahwzer...
