Anyone ever hunt the CMR in Montana? I've got a tag and planning a trip for the first week of November, to hunt by boat. Anyone ever do it? Any tips?

Thanks,
Ed

I hunted the CMR back in 1994 and had a great hunt for mulies. Although we had a boat we only used it for transport to and from some of the bluff country. We hiked a lot and hunted hard for our deer. I haven't been back to that country since then. I wish you luck.

We also hunted it one day back in 1994. My brother killed a nice 4x4. We saw a lot of deer and my dad spotted a huge bull elk but we didn't have a tag for elk.

I'll be hunting mulies. I thought that going by boat would get us to a few areas that were not accessible to those on foot or road. Plan on hunting the coulees and fingers from the lakeshore inland. Don't think I'll find any monsters, but since I'm an easterner, any respectable buck will be trophy for me. Buddy coming along with me, no tag- he's recruited as the camera man. Thanks for any info.

I have done it also. I suggest you have a great boat as the wind can swamp you quick on that res. Keep in mind the water can be quite cold at that time of year. On the positive the mulies are there and so are the walleyes. Bring a rod and hang on as it could also be a monster northern. we camped along the shore and it was a blast.

You and about 2,500 other people have the same idea. It does allow more access but with the lake so low right now it also makes much more difficult. Better have a bigger boat and watch the weather. It also depends on if you plan on hunting the north or south side.

P.S. the Walleye fishing has sucked for most of the year.

Make sure you have all the latest restrictions (i.e.; tree stand steps, hunting season differences, no antler collecting, etc.) posted by the CMR HQ (available in Jordan)-- boat traffic is a real issue and they enforce the rules. Last year they were checking guys in boats and doing enforcement fly overs, making life miserable for the OHV-rule-breaking miscreants...! Mind your manners---"they" are watching!
