Predict that Dutton bull!

With the lack of posts going around due to the off season right now I'm needing a little entertainment. So I'm going to offer $20 to the winner of a stupid contest. Post your guess and a little explanation if you wish and I will send the guy closest in gross score $20 bucks in the mail. You will obviously have to pm me your address however. I'm a bit trigger happy and start drooling all over myself when I see anything over 375 so I'm going to have to guess 384 as my bulls score. Pro swears its gonna be a lot higher and punk says were holding out for bigger the first 3 days as well. So what do you think my bull will score? I will also give $20 to the closest guess on what lowcountryelk's bull will score. He will be hunting the dutton with a bow and will be guided by mossback. My prediction for lowcountry is tagsoup!

Lets just put it this way stinky, my Oryx will out score your bull and have as many points! Ha ha ha!;-)

You need to quit listening to pro, that might get you in trouble? ;-)

Tony, I think it will be bigger than whatever your biggest bull is now. My guess is 35" bigger whatever that is. I dont think you will shoot a bull unless it is bigger than what you got. What if you draw the Gila this year??
The NMRecluse

I actually think you will do quite well grasshoppa....397", but with a mass score of 71" which causes you to shoot even though Slam is begging you to hold out. Mine....let's just say that you will owe me another $20 on top of the $20 for this prediction. I won't predict my score cause I don't want to see you cry if you have to hand over $60.

I have spent my entire life on and around the Dutton.I hope 403 is the score that you get and wish you much success but I think the way things have been trending (my humble opinion only) it is going to be really tuff and I am going to predict 369. Like I said I wish you luck and hope you score on that bull of a lifetime but it will be tuff and due to a lot of different factors that is my guess.

I'll bet you $20 you miss the first three shots....

great post/pic, thanks for sharing

I saw SlamDunk today at antlerfest and I know there will be a lot of effort put into this hunt... I say 384 Gross 7X6 with a dropper of the left side!

Stinky, I hope you're not casting a black cloud on your hunt by asking for predictions.. I'd like to see ya connect on a Booner..

I'm so damned superstitious that I am afraid I'll jinx my hunts altogether if I start callin' predictions on score or size of the animal I'm hunting.. But then again, that's just me.

I'm hoping for a Booner on my hunt as well (got the right tag in the right unit here in AZ), but I sure as hell ain't gonna point to right field with the bat and call my shot before I swing!!

"Tis many a slip between a cup & a lip..."

Time will tell, and good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-07-09 AT 08:42AM (MST)[p]Even if i had a crystal ball i wouldn't look into it for the outcome of this hunt.
With all the drama, controversy and odds stacked against us, i still have all the faith in the world that we are going to see, find and kill one heck of a great bull that we will all be proud of.
As far as a number goes?
I will say 356.....that way we blow my prediction out of the water ;-)

Cowslayer saw the set of elk anlters i brought home from Antlerfest yesterday, he knows i'm totally ruined now!
That 493" bull even makes the spiderbull look small!

Hmm...I will say:

You will either shoot a bull under 375, or come home empty handed.

So my guess is 365.

My 2 day hangover from hell says 388 1/4...but for all the time and hard work that'll go into your hunt, hopefully you'll bust 400...best of luck!!

Here is how the hunt will go down. Slam will say that bull across the canyon will go about 3.. Boom!!! 58. I will say that lowcountry will stick a bull that will go 338. His bull will be shot at 10 yards and your bull will be shot at 1000.

You will kill a bull slightly larger than PRO's Dutton bull from last year.

Jeeeez NUNYA, is that all the faith you have in me....i thought we were friends!! ;-)

Ok, no spikes, i'll find him a big fat 2x2!!

ROFDL! Oh my god nunya I've got 2 broken ribs and I don't need to be laughing this hard. I gotta bow to you for that one. Your the man! LOL

your bull go go just over the 400 mark with a with a nice kicker of the right main beam just above the G4. (392 without kicker)

lowcountryelk will not eat tag soup. he will also kill a Dutton monster, a slick six that will score 395 and change.

he will argue that his bulls mainframe is bigger and therefore the winner.... there will never be any resolution to the contest until you both get together to see who can chug a pitcher of beer the fastest.

Let me know if you need more details.

4blade

I guess that means I'm gonna kick Stinky's butt cause I've been doing quite a bit of practicing on the beer chugging bit to stay hydrated during my multi-hour tennis workouts in this hot SC sun. 4blade, thanks for the confidence; I'll put a Slick Trick where it counts if given the chance and try to make you proud. Already got a 365" monster on the wall, so it will have to be a super monster I really want or I'll just go home happy to have been there.

Ha Ha! It keeps rainin you guys might just do ok! seen some decent bone comin off the dutton this spring!

Slam
That bull is already over in the Beaver unit waiting for me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bullmania

Ohhhhhhhhhhh! DUH! Geez, I shoulda put in for that unit. I know that unit like the back of my hand. I scouted that unit 3 different times last night alone! Got up early and went to work this morning so I could get in early enough to go on another scouting trip again this morning. Haven't found any elk yet but I hear their on the beaver somewhere. Guess I better keep scouting. Maybe I should look high on the hills. I can't find any bulls hiding in the cave in my favoriet valley. ROFDL!

4a1df3ee0ef8dc53.jpg

I also gotta side with slammy about 4blade. Hey slam, I think we need to drop by and kidnap him in August. Can you find his house? I'll bring the truth syrum you bring the jumper cables and battery packs!

4a1df3ee0ef8dc53.jpg

Hey stinkyfinger!;-)

I guess I need to scout my unit more? I have got old and broken down and I cant get excited to scout any more. I just go in once a year to hunt and say to hell with the rest.;-)

scouting is a year round commitment! not a once a year thing! You just need to learn to pound the hills a little harder! The harder you work the more you will get out of it!

4a1df3ee0ef8dc53.jpg

You are right stinky, but I just dont care any more. You wait buddy. You wont care either in about 10 years!

Once my buddy was very busy and didnt have time to scout his unit properly. I helped him out and scouted it very hard for him. His unit was amazing and I could never figure out why he didnt spend more time on it. He was busy working and when he did have time he wanted to scout this other unit that wasnt all that great and out of his area. Hmm, go figure? Now we are both kinda sick of the same old unit so if somenoe would like to trade unit secrets I'm up or down for it which ever.
It also dosent hurt to scout private property. You never know when something will jump the fence.
--------------------------------------

"I needed a cheesy signature saying like everyone else"

For sure its one of those 1970 growth years but come late August you may want to find a nice wet wallow and trim the bush surrounding it so you can get a good shot off...he he

I'm not too worried about the vegitation around my wallow. I sprayed soil sterilizer around it and the grass now only grows in a path that leads critters to the wallow. However I can't trespass. I have a contract with the landowner of the current wallow and everytime the landowner catches me looking at other elk hunting properties I get threatened with death. It's a real serious contract I dare not violate.

4a1df3ee0ef8dc53.jpg

I think you checked your two duffle bags in with the landowner.

--------------------------------------

"I needed a cheesy signature saying like everyone else"

Wow, this thread went down hill fast....SS, i just dont understand why you think you need to look at other properties when you have the best- bar none! Better be careful, or else i will lock the gates and give the keys to someone who will appreciate what they got. And h3ll yes nunya, he did check them in, and if you were him you would too for a chance to hunt a property like this!.

BTW stinky, this goes both ways. Im sure there are alot of hunters out there that would go ape wild to have a stab at your wallow......

Hold on! I'm sure your unit is great.BUT.... I have hunted some a the best lands in the western united states, beaches of Mexico and carribean. I have hunted some great looking wallows that to tell you the truth were some of the worst hunting a man could have. Its those little things you cant see that make for a great hunt. Sorry QT not checkin my bags in at the unit border. :) More of a on call hunter. You see I'm getting paid to scout and hunt! I have found that the majority of property owners like a hunter who will spend a large amount of time and hunt the livin #### out of their property, scouting again and again and again. I produce, thus making their unit seem more valuable. And remember, in this biz if you dont have video it didn't happen! :)

--------------------------------------

"I needed a cheesy signature saying like everyone else"

Don't worry nunya, no offense taken. You dont know what your missing and you never will, but obviously SS's unit was worth checking his bags for so that pretty much tells you all you need to know. ;-) I threaten SS but the truth is, he is such an awesome hunter that if i did get pissed, tear up the contract and give the keys to my property to someone else, i would still have to sneak him over the fence. :7 I also know enough to know guys like you are all talk and no show. You have to brag about being awesome hunters and how you hunt SOOOOO many properties ( i especially like the video part) so that you feel cool, manly, and studly. People like ss dont have to do that. :)

I think your takin this post way to serious missy.
--------------------------------------

"I needed a cheesy signature saying like everyone else"

Is it possible to build a man made wallow? I know you can make an artificial scrape.

Personally I like to hunt pristine untouched wilderness. Not ground that has been altered by man.

Some might want to break open a mud hole that's just not right infact should be against the law in every State under all hunting regulations. Not fairplay just like poaching if you ask me.Off limits to all hunting.

nah, nunya. Im just keeping up with you boys! Can't let you have the last say, so i will call it a truse. Just givin you some crap back, i find it very entertaining.:D

To each his own, ramtagless. lol

WARBIRD,

A mud hole? Dude, no mud holes, stick with the wallows. Mud holes can be very messy and unsafe.

I have a question. Everyone has tossed out an opinion on stinky's bull size. They range from slightly bigger than PRO's bull, to Oryx size, to well above 400. Where is PRO? He is the one in charge here with multiple sightings of 400 bulls. His buddy swb even states that PRO can bugle entire herds from nieghboring units. I want to hear his prediction? How big is the bull you are going to put in front of stinky? Better yet, how many burgers you going to feed stinky?;-) Lets see some video of the bull with stinky's name attached?

I am going to predict slammy grabs stinky and goes after a bull I mentioned. They find it ten miles away and grosses 425. It is a long hike in a non-roaded area. PRO is in Antimony eating hamburgers. That is my story and I am sticking to it!;-)

fireman,

That sounds like the best plan. I also predict I will let stinky pet a book mt goat 2 days into his hunt.

wow! I leave for a couple days and this thread went completly sideways!

ktc, is your prediction of ss petting a mt. goat in refrence to qtpie or a real goat (cant tell these days)

slam dunk and ss I dont know where that bull is yet but he will do....I did see the pic before I made the prediction so maybe it was subconcious.
If you want you could save that bull till next year and I will take him when he is at his full potential...dont want to take a bull like that to soon. HA!

I won't credit for nothing by myself, this hunt is going to be a group effort of success by everyone involved, right down to the woman that will be flipping those Antimony burgers ;-)

48288e6577d023b6.jpg

Come on PRO, the cat got your tongue? I know better than that, you always have something to say and you are always right! What is your prediction? I have been checking this thread every hour to get your prediction. Last year you had 4-5 bulls over 400" found in may! How many you got found this year? Dude, you have a spotlight on you and your new business. I hope stinky pounds the biggest, baddest, bull on the mountain!:)

I have ate lots of those burgers and I can assure you they are she's and not he's. 2 big she's and one petite one!

FOR GOD SAKE KTC QUIT RUNNIN YOUR MOUTH. Don't say petite, cuz now I can't go to antimony! curse you KTC! lol

Hey longshooter338-
Judging by your username, you and Stinky have something in common......
His TRG42/Nighforce combo in .338 Lapua is down right frightening! :)

LAST EDITED ON Jun-15-09 AT 10:16PM (MST)[p]Its fine ss, you can go to antimony. Just dont mess with the "petite" chick, or you will be paying alimony!! haha im a poet! JK, she may be petite, but that doesnt mean shes pretty, and she sure as heck aint me :) so im not worried. and i forgot to say that your taking slammy and he's the biggest man whore i know so he will have her before you get in the door to the restaurant.;-)

QTPIE-
Hey, your going to ruin my reputation here, C'mon!!
We're going elk hunting, not a bachelor party in Las Vegas.....that's the week after the hunt!! Lol

48288e6577d023b6.jpg

I was gonna say 387 3/8 to narrow down my previous prediction but it appears that nobody really cares about the elk's score anymore.... just stinky and slammy's "score???"

I predict that i get so sick of these dumb post and the same people talking about how great they are that I buy an over the counter spike tag and stay 200 yards in front of you just to piss you off. Seroiusly thinking about it.

Hooner, lighten up its just a message board. Besides this particular hunt is not during any legal spike hunt, might want to check our dates.

You should have bought a sheep tag. Elks are boring.

--------------------------------------

"I needed a cheesy signature saying like everyone else"

Pro just about had me talked into a big horn sheep tag. I decided to fly up n check out the herd near slc and decided it was too much like ibex and barbary and other goat/sheep type animals. they just all look too danged much alike. now I have no desire to shoot any sheep other than a dall but since I saw ur pics with that dall I figured if u can do it that must not be too hard either. those slow rolling hills in the back ground would be way to easy hunting for my taste. lol

WHat kind of truck do you have? The unit is not that big. Thanks for the offer could be interesting can I use my ponies?

Hooner,

This is none of my business, but your spike tag is good in early October, and stinky's tag is for mid-September. Just thought I would give you a heads up so you dont go to jail poaching a spike.

KTC are you sure that you have the correct archery dates? Not that I really care I am just on this messaage board because I am bored and a little tired of reading the same tired messages every two weeks. But it looks like this is an archery hunt and if that is the case the dates would over lap. If it is a rifle hunt which I don't think it is then you are right and the dates don't overlap. Go ahead and correct me if I am wrong.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-26-09 AT 04:08PM (MST)[p]It's actually the first rifle hunt. And you could actually follow me with a shotgun and hunt chuckar. I will pm you my camp coordinates when I get there. just bring a gun for me to and a horse. I've been dying to shoot a chuckar. I've never shot a free range chuckar b4 only high fenced ones.

4a1df3ee0ef8dc53.jpg

Are you still taking predictions? I say either 338 gross B&C or tag soup...Dutton's golden days are over!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-27-09 AT 11:08AM (MST)[p]jims: rofdl! ur smokin so much dope it aint even funny. I could buy a tag right now for 3500 bucks in 3 separate units in NM and come out with a mid 340's bull all day long. given the fact that dutton is the same size as these NM units, has 600 less MB tags given than my NM units, n has the same size herd, I can assure u I WILL b seeing and passing 360 bulls even if I went on my own. Its kinda funny to see some of u utah guys that have only hunted trophy bulls once in their life and think they know it all. I've seen the dutton first hand. studied the hunter numbers etc and KNOW giant bulls are in there. Yeah I'm still taking bets but 338 aint gonna happen. I've killed far too many 340 type bulls. So I'm gonna put u down for tag soup. I will make a total list of all bets n post it before the hunt.

4a1df3ee0ef8dc53.jpg

Stinkystomper...If you are hunting w/rifle on Dutton...I say you may see 3 or 4 bulls pushing 360 if you are hunting w/a reputable guide and hunt super hard for 1 solid week! If this year is anything like last season you are very likely to go home w/tag soup if you are holding out for 360 or nothing. I may judge 360 differently than you but I am usually pretty close. I saw 330 bulls last year that guys were calling 360! I only saw 2 bulls 360+ last year and my buddy w/a reputable guide only saw 1! If last year is any indication of where Dutton (and UT) bulls are headed you may be in for a big suprise and a very rough hunt!

To leave on a positive note...they likely had decent moisture so hopefully it will mean decent antler growth! Bulls I saw last year had great fronts but had horrible length and back forks. The majority of UT bulls I saw photos of last year were this way and I don't know if it was a lack of age or just a poor antler growing year? As you can probably tell..I am a straight shooter and tend to tell it like I see it!

OK Here goes. I predict it will unfold like this.
opening morning after breaking through all the blocked roads and spotters / bull babysitters SS will drop the .75 cal missle on the first 6x that steps in to the clear.

PRO will be cut off mid sentence of " wait it's a BLAMMO bucket bull we can do better" and SS will be headed down for the group mullett pics and back slapping.

330 or tag soup

I predict if chubster isn't dead before stinky's hunt and he's on the mountain stinky will either kill him or eat tag soup.

After all, how could you kill a pidly 380 bull when there may be a potential new record breaking bull running around...

That's what you paid the big money for and you may get your chance...:)

does anyone have any pictures of this record breaking bull. Just thought I would ask.

My prediction always has been and still is-

We will hunt hard and kill the best bull we can find in the course of our hunt......we'll tape him afterwards ;-)

48288e6577d023b6.jpg

Boy you 330 predictionists are startin to kill the spirit of the season. I can't believe how many elk scrooges there are in this forum. shees, 330? Thats way down the list for all the rain the dutton has been getting.

4a1df3ee0ef8dc53.jpg

well I'm calling 393 and change. I'm also thinking at least 3 pizza's will be delivered. I think I will be closer in score then those who pick under 360

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

Rain doesn't have so much to do with it as does the age of bulls left on the unit. The numbers show clearly that they want to manage the Dutton for 5-6 year old bulls.

You're correct to a point rowdy. The harvest age objective is 5-6 years of age, but that does not mean every bull killed on Dutton is 5-6 years old. Some will be 3-4 years old, others will be 5-6 years old, and others will be 7-10 years old which is the age of peak antler size in elk. Harvest age averages only tells the average age of the bulls harvested, NOT the age of the bulls living on the unit at any given moment. A unit like Dutton that has high escapement options for wise old bulls can have the same harvest age averages as a 'lesser' unit that has less escapement options for bulls. Harvest age averages mean very little in regards to the high end quality available on a given unit. Dutton has plenty of 6+ year old bulls munching on grass this very moment, the trick is finding them come hunting season.

PRO

"the trick is finding them come hunting season"

Really? So this is a hunt, not a shoot?

Pro, I am not so sure that there are "plenty" of 6 plus year old bulls on the dutton right now. The late gun hunts have taken a lot of the top end bulls out of that unit. I know a few of the hard core shed hunters who live on the unit in late winter early spring and the consensus is that it is getting hard to find 350 plus bulls. I agree that some big bulls still exist but they are not "plenty"full.
