Looks like I drew a NM unit 44/45 1st rifle elk tag, 3rd choice!

Season's shaping up to look like this:

Oct 1-Wyoming Region "K" deer (wife/step-son/me)

Oct 10-New Mexico 44/45 Elk tag (Dad/me)

Oct 20-Nevada Elk tag. (Just me plus whomever is helping)

Funny thing is I really wanted 16B or E but when Nevada came through, I was rooting for this tag because of the season dates.

And a couple of 100 $$s less.

Gonna buy a lottery ticket tomorrow.

"Gonna buy a lottery ticket tomorrow"
Forget the lottery ticket you better go buy another Freezer

Oil, the 2 in the garage are almost 1/2 empty. They were so full in Nov that I gave my daughter 2+ milk crates full of antelope and elk. Couple of more horseshoe tournaments/barbeques this summer and I'll be alright.

But damn, that antelope steak is so good!! I resisted eating it until a few weeks ago cause I just knew it was no good. They stink so bad!! After we started eating it, we can't get enough.

Congrats on the tags. I'm jealous of the Nevada tag, should be a great hunt. Hope I draw some day but every time I look at those odds I have a reality check.

That's funny about the antelope. I did the same thing on a Wyoming antelope. Ground it all up into hamburger and left it in the freezer for TWO years, when we ran out of elk meat we finally gave it a shot and couldn't beleive what we were missing. I would have never guessed it would have tasted so good after smelling it when I processed the animal. Go figure!

By the way, where in Cali are you? I'm about 2 hours NE of LA out in the desert.

Do you have a job? Man how do you take so much time off work? I'd be divorced and unemployed if I did 3 back to back to back hunts and my wife is fairly tolerant.Congrats on some great tags though. Someone has to be lucky....it may as well be you!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-11-09 AT 07:05PM (MST)[p]Sludge, I'm in the NE corner. Approx 70 miles west of Reno Nevada. High Desert.

Cabin, I did get a divorce after 25 years, ouch!!!!!!!!

But I took 5 straight weeks last year, Nevada Antelope, Alberta goose hunt, Colorado archery elk and Wyoming antelope. Got home and hunted chukar every weekend. My girlfriend, who hunted in Alberta and Wy with me never complained. I then asked her to marry me.

When I found out I drew the Nevada elk tag the neighbors heard me shout, and she was happy. When I told her I drew NM last night, we were both quiet for about two minutes. She then came over, gave me a big hug and told me "Good Luck" About 10 minutes later she said, "I want to kill a big buck this year."

I want to make that happen for her.

M77, Thank you!! And she loves huntin dogs, and doesn't complain about how much it costs to feed the horses.

She's from Germany and huntin there is a very rich man's sport. I think she feels privledged to be able to do it.

Brett, We're neighbors, Janesville.

The Pecos wilderness is big country with average bulls, thats why its a standard hunt and not high demand. If I had a Nevada elk tag for Ely I would spend every minute scouting specific bulls and hammer him opening day,but NM hits a guys card so now what? Dont take me wrong I would probably go to NM to but I might consider hiring somebody reputable for a shot at a MONSTER in Nevada. Just thinkin anyways, guides arent for me or most people I know, but on a once in a life time tag?? BH1

I had planned the following scouting trips: 4 days over Labor Day, 4 days mid-Sept and 4 days early.

NM ends 10/14, NV opens 10/20, guess I'll keep to my plan.

I've eaten tags before due to over-scheduling but my dad's 74 and can't do it by himself and don't know how much longer he can do it.

Cancelling NM is not an option.

Nor is a guide.

I'd rather take a 340 bull DIY than a 380 bull with a guide. Strange but that's me.

CalES, I have to agree on the guide thing. I drew a NV unit 111-222 archery elk tag 3 years ago and I was thrilled to take a 350 7/8" bull DIY. I saw several others take smaller bulls. I did get within bow range of a 400 class and a 8x9 380 class and that ain't bad for DIY. Passed due to poor angles. Guide could not have kept up with me anyway.

Also, I have bowhunted 44/45 twice. There were some 320" bulls in there.

Good Luck with all of your tags. I would make sure that the hunt with your dad happens. The NV hunt might be a OIL but so could any hunt with your dad at his age. I hope you have as good of luck this year as you did last in Co.

Yo-Cali!

Maybe you and 'NocHawk' should do a bet--say $1 a point--- by total inches.....as you and Nate have drawn like 3 elk tags in 3 different states!!

What a dream Fall you 2 have lined up!

The very best of good fortune/harvests and trouble free traveling to the both of you guys!

Ilarcher, If you don't mind could you PM me any info you're willing to part with on 44/45? Before you do, realize that my long term plan is to apply 44/45 archery 2 out of 3 years. When I know I'm not gonna draw Co. So if 44/45 is in your future plans don't give me the honey hole.

log, thanks for the support!! Did some quick thinking. Although out of my price range, I could purchase a LO tag for NV. If this is Dad's last year he can physically do this, I can't get that back. Plus I'm very comfortable with my NV plans. If 25 days doesn't get me the bull I'm happy with then at least I'll know I put the effort in.

Please, I'm always up for a good bet. Without even knowing which hunts NocHawk drew I'll take a bet BUT it has to be his two best against my two. I ONLY drew 2 elk hunts, the Wyoming hunt is a family deer hunt. A dollar an inch?? WOW, pretty steep!! And both of us with Taxidermy bills too. Maybe a flat fee??
