LAST EDITED ON Oct-10-05 AT 09:40PM (MST)[p]I went on the joker hunt up to 56...wow what a mess. There was on orange dot, a pick up, or a fourwheeler on every ridge it seemed like. We seen about 30 head total..watch as 5 different sets of hunters shot at two small bucks in the foot hills before the lake. Seen four two points, a three point all small, and a real nice 4 point 25-27 nice forks and real heavy that were killed. But they need to do something with that hunt next year, I really felt bad for the deer, because I know they were just getting run around like cattle in a round up.

Brother knocked down a 4x4 w/eyeguards around 8 in the morning. Nice one as he hunts for horns. Didnt get it back to truck till around 3. Said hair was about gone though from the drag.
Had a friend sunday him and his daughter had bull tags and they both thumped a couple spikes. His daughter shot hers at 440 yds across a canyon she nailed it threw the heart and both where running together. He shot his around the same. Got video of both hunts. Her was in the open and his I called back out of the trees with a bugle. Shot them at 9 in monring and had both in truck by 5 that evening. I am sore as heck from them 2 packs. Going up elk hunting and will let my son shoot a buck up there. He is getting out of school for Mon, Tues next week so didnt want him to miss any school for deer. He wants a buck also so have seen bucks every time elk hunting but I usually dont shoot deer in my elk spot. But will let him do it.
Good luck all in the next couple weeks.

Im usually in Idaho right now hunting but can't go this year!!. It will be the first hunting season I have missed in 20 years. I hope you all realize how fortunate you are to be hunting this year.

I'm stuck working too. I also have been flattened by a chest cold, I hope my lungs clear up soon so I can get enough air to hike.

One guy sure had a bad opener. I wonder what the story is on this one. Everyone be careful out there!!

NAMPA -- The deer season in Idaho is less than 24 hours old, and already one Meridian man has been shot accidentally.

A 34-year-old man hunting deer in Canyon County just west of Boise was shot in the back Monday afternoon.

Thomas Link and a friend from Star were hunting near the Boise River.

Suddenly, his partner heard his companion yell that he'd had been shot.

After being transported to a local hospital, Link will be fine, police say.

Canyon County sheriff's deputies say they are investigating just where the shot might have come from.

They say they've got several deputies looking into it.

I took my son Blake out for his first deer hunt opening morning, was on the mountian about 2 1/2 miles in about 10 minutes before you could start to see. About 25 minutes of waiting and watching and here came 7 bucks. One was an excellant 4x4, around the 28 inch mark I would guess and very tall. Unfortunatly Blake couldn't pick him up in the scope. when he finally did they were over 400 yards away, so we opted to go after them. We never saw them again, but saw 19 bucks total. It was a very hard lesson for me to let the 3 4x4's we saw go why I was trying to get him a shot at one. He only saw the 1st one, never could see the others. It was a very good hunt and a good experience for us both. We were hunting a 4 point or bigger unit or he would have got the biggest 3 point I have ever seen, about 70 yards broadside and looking at us for several minutes. We went out again tonight to a different unit, but didn't see anything, but found a very nice shed.

We took horses about 2 hours back in to an old hunting spot. We had it to ourselves and was a little disappointed in the amount of deer and deer sign we saw. Saw 4 does and 1 good 4 point.

I spotted the 4 point in his bed and we tried a push. I had the buck broadside standing at about 125 yards down a 45 degree slope. When I pulled up to shoot, my hunting partners head was in the scope (between me and the deer). No way was I going to pull the trigger, so that one got away. That buck let my friend walk by him at less than 25 yards, twice before he finally got up. He was about 26" wide, 160 class buck.

On the other ridge my friends son saw a big 2 point that he let go and a small 4 pt and another 2 pt went below him. That was about it.

20 years ago when I first went to this canyon you could drive your pickup in and there would be several groups of hunters and lots of deer shot. Now, very little access, very little pressure and very few deer.

Hey one shot, instead of joing the fish and game and tryong to inilate the deer in unit 56 why don't you not buy your tag for that unit. It is perfectly clear to me that the fish and game are only opening that unit for the money. I myself grew up hunting that unit and have seen many good bucks come out of there. Those days are gone by. When the fish and game decide to manage for the game instead of the money we will again have good bucks coming out of unit 56.

Big Bull-

I just purchased a general tag...they never asked me what unit..i'm holding out for a late bow hunt, i just wanted to see how really riduclous it was. I totally do not agree with what they did to that unit, i'm furious with it. We have taken some beautiful bucks out of there..and too see that many people running the deer around, i really felt sad for them. Talk to lots of people who said they seen just two points, and lots of people.

"When the fish and game decide to manage for the game instead of the money we will again have good bucks coming out of unit 56."

Ha Ha thats a good one! When exactly is this management change going to happen?

You nailed the problem BB101. Unit 56 is my backyard and the last 2 years have made me sick.

I'm thinking now that units 70 & 73 have been "4 points" only for the last few years that IDFG will open them up to any buck and sell 5000 tags for those also. LOL what a joke.
