Mule Deer Archery Hunting

I am a dyed in the wool still hunter. I have been lucky enough to take a three cow elk using this method, in conjunction with calling. I want to give it a try for mule deer. Is there any deer call made that mule deer will respond to, and come in to, when you spot one in the timber? I am talking about during the September Colorado bowseason.

I've heard Mule deer make grunt before. But I highly doubt that it would be affective to call one in. They don't rut in September so your best bet would be the spot and stalk method.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with Cass. I hunted from a tree stand this year and saw about 25 does but never had a buck come in. I know mulies communicate vocally but I don't know that they would even investigate that time of year. I've had lots of deer come into my varmint call though!

Spot-n-stalk is the best way to hunt early archery. Now, the late archery hunt down here is alot of fun. 70 degrees in the desert chasing ruttin' mulies, awsome!

AZWALKER,
the reason for deer coming into your varmint call is that a fawn deer in distress makes a call much similar to a varmint call like the squeel of a wounded rabbit and it will confuse doe deer. I have used a fawn in distress call many times to locate deer and they literally come running in to the call. I even had a doe run up to me and try to hoof me to death. She was blowing and snorting. Scared the hell out of me until I realized why she was doing it. They are very protective of their young even when it's not there own.

Started hoofing you.... I bet you never thought you'd ever be scared of a doe!!! What a trip. Yeah I've had them come in on me a few times, bucks too!

use an elk call before daylight or at some point, if the area has elk in it and some pressure I've noticed that buck deer will come in close to areas where there have been some cow calls. Some of the largest bucks that I have ever seen while hunting came in while I was cow calling, mostly because it was a familar sound and they figured it was a safe place to walk through. If nothing else works, it might be worth a try.

had a little buck about run over top of me last year with Primos doe in estrus can call. came in grunting like he would of scored at least 175, realistically would of scored maybe 17. (one horned two pt.) I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

losthuntr: Do you recommend using the cow call softly, and while still-hunting?

bornforhorns: WEre these mule deer that cam in running, or whitetails? And was it during the early season(Sept)?

it's usually more effective during the rut but try the deer talker/deer stopper call. I've watched their video and was surprised by some mule deer's reaction. I've used it and have had many does come in to investigate, if you are patient enough keep at it and bucks will sometimes wander in after a while to investigate.

soft point, just like baldbull says it works better during the rut but nonetheless when you get does coming in during the rut the bucks are sure to follow. it works best with a treestand but it stops you from being as mobile.
I have called a whack of smaller bucks in during the bowseason out here. just make sure you are always watching for bears as it works really great for them.

I guess what I really need to know is what kind of call would be good to use for bringing mule deer in close while still-hunting during the september colorado bow season.
