My friend just purchased a voucher for these units..Just looking for a little info..If he hunts hard and gets a few miles off of the roads, does he have a decent chance of bumping into a 175 plus type buck? What type of terrain will he be hunting? Steep..PJ's..?? Thanks for the help...

Ridgewalker,
We also picked up vouchers for the 3rd season hunt. We are new to the area ( unit 42 ) and will be leaving this afternoon for the 1st rifle elk season in 42. In our scouting trips up there this summer we have seen some INCREDIBLE bucks. I'm not much of a mule deer hunter having never harvested one but after seeing what we had scouting we decided to dish out the 150.00 for a few vouchers for 3rd rifle. The western side of 42 is P&J canyon country and a little less accessible than the eastern end which is more aspen/ oak/ sage type country. Make no mistake though in talking to locals the place is going to get hammered, especially with elk hunters south of Glenwood Springs. Even though 3rd season is a week later they won't rut until it calms down. The bucks will be getting antsy and will be moving around in the more secluded areas. Your probably going to run into other hunters where ever you go but obviously not many the further in. From talking with locals this is a heavy road hunt type unit. Doubt you will be alone even a few miles in but I can't really say more than that, sorry. We have been seeing these larger bucks pretty far from ATV, hiking trails and roads. If you keep to that you will have a great hunt. Pray for snow !!! Good luck to you.

Paul,

I am a local in this area and am looking for a 3rd season buck tag. If you have any extras, maybe we can make a deal?

R walker, Paul hit it right on the head, however 3rd season slows down just a little bit. The high country just got pounded with snow, 2ft.

Where do you guys plan to stay?
Hunting public I assume?
Lots of places to go around here, lots depends on the weather.

Good Luck

Hello. There are some tags on Ebay but they are going for a lot still. Type in "colorado deer" to see the vouchers. As the season gets closer they will probably ditch them for around 150.00 what is what they pay for that unit tag. We got ours directly through a landowner who is friends of family. We paid 300.00 for 3 tags. Also try huntersdomain.com There are a few tags here at MM but they are outrageous also. Try calling Rifle, or Glenwood chamber of commerce. They will know some people. Good luck !
