when do bulls usually quit growing and about how fast do the grow a month, got some good footage and just trying to see how much i can expect before they start rubbin

The bulls I watch normally are rubbing velvet during the first week of August. The older bulls go first and can even start in late July. Some of the pipsqueaks will not rub out till closer to Sept. This is in So. Utah.

On the north Manti last year, we saw several 330 class bulls still in the velvet the first two weeks of the archery hunt. (Middle to late august)

Last year the units that I spend the most time on in Southern Utah, Big bulls still had velvet on Opening weekend of the Archery and lost it durring the first week of the season.
They were also still in Bacholer groups.
Remember that the DWR moved the Season Up a week last year so the bowhunters would have more opportunity to kill a bull, they just forgot to move it a week the other way!

I almost forgot, from what I understand, a bull can grow about an inch a day, but you have to remember genetics are going to come into play big time, your not going to see a bull get an inch a day in flat out tine length, thats not the way it works, you will get mass and width and tine length. That all goes into account when figuring out what kindof bull your looking at.
I also think a bull will top out so to speak, he will reach a point where hes just not going to get much bigger, even in the in the Velvet or if it seems early or not, he may done even in the 3rd week of July, not saying that is always the case but I have seen bulls that it seemed like they just stopped growing alittle early. I dont know if lack of water, feed, genetics or what makes this happen. You should be able to tell now if the bull you are looking at is a good one or not.
Best of Luck on watching that BULL!

The DWR did NOT move up the season a week. The opening day was changed to open the same day as the deer archery opener giving LE archery hunters 28 days to hunt instead of 23. The early opening is due to the long standing opening of the hunt the 3rd Saturday of August. The archery hunt still ends the day before the LE rifle hunt as always. I helped get this passed so LE archery tag holders would get the last 5 days w/o spike hunters competing with them when the hunting is usually the best. The DWR had nothing to do with the change, it was by archers and agreed upon by the Wildlife Board.

+1 pro

when will these guys finaly figure out that they got a week added to their hunt and dont have to compete with the spike hunters on the last week?

LET ME SAY IT SLOWLEY AGAIN FOR THOSE THAT DONT UNDERSTAND

If you draw your once in a life time elk tag and you have "ONE WEEK LONGER TO HUNT" then you did the year before and the "HUNT" still "ENDS" on the same day as it always has and then you get the last week to hunt without all the lame spike hunters. this is a "WIN WIN" for bow hunters!

Archery is a year round commitment!!

Pro, Hey im not saying that the extra time without the spike hunters is a bad thing. I believe we are on the same page with that, but LE Archery ending on the 11th of Sept? You have got to agree that most archers in this state would like there last week to be ending on the 19th or 20th of Sept rather than the 11th. Im not saying that you cant kill a bull early, it can be done, but for most guys, I think they would like a bugling bull tag. Ya Ya I know that its harder to kill a BIG BULL once he has cows and is running the show, (with a bow atleast)but it sure is alot more fun when they are vocal!

high peak
all archers would love to have that in their fantacy land. You make it seem like it was easy to just get a week added on to the front of the season and we should have just went in and took a week from the rifle guys or the kids early hunt.

well in this state the wildlife board is anti archery especially when it comes to elk. All you have to do is just look at other states to compare.

so getting a week added to your hunt and not having spike hunters messing with your once in a life time hunt was the best we could do at this time and it was an improvement to what you would have had if you drew a tag this year.

Archery is a year round commitment!!

Why would the state management hate a group who sells out the archery deer tags in two hours? Thats crazy. This state has some pretty screwed up management. (here comes the lightning bolts) Last years opening day was 95 degrees. Even if you did kill an elk, have fun trying to get it out of the back country before it spoils. Ya, it makes for good water hole hunting, but who would rather do that then hunt bugling bulls?

I drew my archery tag in 2006. I would have given my left nut to have the last week without all the spike hunters calling over my shoulder. Give me a week without any interferance and I will at least have a better chance. Hell, I would take that week the first week of September!

As for the original post, most of the fast growth is done. You will see bulls finishing off in the next couple of weeks. You should definately be able to tell whether or not a bull is a shooter by now though.

It's always an adventure!!!
