Mulepacker killed a 380 class bull last year on a LE unit with a 3-4 year old harvest objective, and OTC tags right across the border in Idaho. Please explain how that is possible when you just said doing so would result in the extinction of 350+ bulls? The North Cache has a harvest age average of LESS than 4 years old, yet it has produced 400 class bulls in the last few years as well as SEVERAL record class bulls.

Now, before you go crazy, I do NOT support making every LE unit with 3-4 year old age objectives. In fact, I advocate doing away with harvest age objectives altogether and using bull:cow ratios instead.

Scare tactics like this is what has led the Wildlife Board to issue statewide spike tags, due to unwarranted fears about 'quality' drop offs.

You're right Bessy, we have been through this many times, and yet you still refuse to answer the simple question I have asked many times; You don't want cows killed, you don't want more than a few mature bulls killed, you don't want spikes killed, yet a certain number of elk MUST be killed each year by LAW, so what elk do YOU propose to kill? You can't have bull:cow ratios at 60+ and maintain healthy herds for very long. I HATE spike tags, get that through your melon! But, it is the "Sky is falling Trophy hunters" that are the cause of the spike tags being issued statewide. I attended 3 of the 5 RAC's and the Wildlife Board last fall trying to stop statewide spike tags, so I did my part on fighting it.

REDDOG, are you really comparing the North Cache to OTC tags in Colorado? I guided in Colorado for 10 years, and the quality is no where near as high in Colorado OTC areas as the North Cache LE unit. That is a FACT. To assert otherwise is pure fantasy. Again, I am NOT advocating making all LE units in Utah like the North Cache, my point is we can issue more tags than we do now and still have incredible quality. If we were to change season dates, change tag allotment percentages to skew more to primitive weapons instead of 60% going to rifle hunters in the middle of the rut, and issue tag numbers based on bull:cow ratios instead of harvest age averages, we could issue more tags and still have the best trophy elk hunting in the world.

Can't help but post on this one. There is an old term that has been around forever. WHY CHANGE SOMETHING THAT IS WORKING?
Like we all know the problem with the Bull to Cow ratio is the count takes place on the winter range. There are many units that the elk will change winter ranges so you get unrealistic numbers on the count. The sad thing is that it usually affects the same units every 4-5 years because the DWR gets a bad count in the winter and the next year they increase the tags.
As far as the spike tags go the writing is on the wall and we all see it. It sucked to wait 9- 13 years for an elk tag but in the past once you had the tag you had a legitimate chance at a 350+ bull and if you were either really lucky or hunted exteremely hard you had a chance at a 380+ bull. It is obvious that will change with the spike hunt.
The only positive thing that I can see is that with Utah producing smaller bulls some of the SPECIAL guiding outfits will not be getting payed the amount of money that they are used to getting. Which will in return put less pressure on the mountians.

hooner utah will not be producing smaller bulls with the spike hunts. nope!

Utah will have to cut the big bull tags they have right now way back cause they cant kill from both ends. They will then only give out about 5 mature big bull tags per unit. The rest of the bull tags will go to spike hunters and people that can afford to buy the big bull tags. Who wins with this BS:

1. division does with all the revenue with the spike tags $$$$
2. SFW and the sale of the big bull tags $$$$
3. guides cause no one wants to get a once in a life time hunt and kill a spike $$$$
4. hunters that can afford to buy the tags from SFW $$$$
