Proud of my son

As parents who hunt, we all dream of the day we get to experience the chance to take our kids hunting. I remember my first time tagging along with my dad, and watching him miss a huge buck I had spotted on a ridge line. And I rremember watching him shoot a buck at what I thought was a mile away. And having him there when I shot my first buck. Good memories all.

Well, with a sevier disability, I wondered if I would ever get to experience taking my boy on his first hunt. I couldn't wait for him to turn 14 to hunt in UT so I put him in for a WY tag and he drew one. We enjoyed spending time this summer shooting and judging distances and just getting him ready. He was some what spoiled to the fact that he has seen lots of big bucks in his 13 years of life so I was pretty sure he wouldn't succum to the buck fever his old man did. :)

Sat, Oct 1st, with the help of my good friends Clint Sorensen and Stefan White and his girlfriend Heather, we left for WY at 4:00 am, arriving to a previouly scouted area at 6:30. After a short hike with Clint, they got to the ridge they wanted to sit at and waited for the action.

About 8:00 they spotted a buck 6 or 7 hundred yards away moving in their direction. Client put the camera on him and filmed him closing the distance to about 250 yards. At this point the buck stopped and turned to look back.

My son fired his 25-06 hitting him a little behind the front shoulder. The buck jumped and ran into a set of aspens and disappeared from their view. They waited for Stefan and Heather to join them, and then went to find the buck. He had only traveled 40 yards and laid down, and after a finishing shot, my boys first was a success.

I want to thank good friends for all there help and for sharing this experience with us. I'm very proud of Garrett, not only for doing well on the hunt, but for being the great kid he is.

Heres a few pics of the proud moment. If the pictures don't show up that means I screwed up and will need some help posting.

Although I had nothing to do with the hunt I can honestly tell you guys that I couldn't be more proud of each of you. You guys all deserve every bit of the success you've shared this year on Garrett's hunt.

Larry, you are honestly one of the most driven, hard working and selfless people I've ever met in my life. Some of the things you are able to put together and make happen are simply unbeleivable. What a great dad!

Garrett, congratulations on a very, very fine first buck buddy! He's going to look great on the wall and I can't wait to see him! Sounds like you made a heck of a shot on him too! I bet most of your 12 year old buddies can't say they've thumped a nice 4pt wall hanger can they! You're the man! Remeber these trips and each of the things that your dad teaches you while you're out hunting. Soak it all up and lock it in your memory so you can enjoy it over and over for years to come. You're really lucky to have such a great mom and pop you know. I hope you realize that and always appreciate the things that they do for you. Heck they're pretty lucky to have such a good kid too really! :) Good job buddy!

Clint/Stephan/Heather, you guys did awesome too! Very cool of you all to go and help them out with the hunt!

The whole deal is just AWESOME!!!

Talk about "pass it on", there is no greater feeling sharing that very special moment of your son or daughter taking their first big game. My best hunt memories are about my son's hunt, my daughter's first hunt this year (although she already has standards and wouldn't shoot a small two point) and fond memories of hunting with my father-in-law.

Congrats to a fine new hunter for a great buck and his dad for making the special effort to let it happen.

Congratulations to your son on his first buck, I'm sure it gave you a warm feeling inside. Also thanks for the help a few years ago you gave me on hunting that same area. On that hunt a friend of mine shot his first buck.

Thanks guys for the kind words and all the help you provide on this site. Truely a family in and of itsself. I hope each of you may experience the same joy of taking a youngster out.

Larrybo, its seems succuss just follows you around, and that area is good to many first timers.

Yelum- That is great that you got to experience your son's first deer hunt and even greater that you have friends like that to call on.

Yelum,
Congrats to your son! Thats a heck of a first buck! BTW where were you hunting at in WY? That looks like the country in the southern end of 135, Kemmerer/Cokeville.

Congratulations to your son and to you also on a great first buck. Im sure he will remember it forever.

YELUM,

Congratulations to your son, to you, to your great friends. That is one great memory. I can remember all three of my kids first deer, and every one after. Very proud moments. And I also have some idea how good your friends must feel. They are better people for having experienced this hunt and for knowing you. I could not be happier for all of you if I tried.

Yelum,

You're an inspiration to a lot of people on this site-myself included. I can only imagine the way you have inspired your family. Your sons smile says it all. Congrats to you both!

Yelum,

One day when you are a wrinkled up old man, that kid is going to be even more proud of you. You are a true inspiration.

Congratulations to your son. He is a lucky boy.

Congratulations! Some of my most memorable hunts have been with kids, I cant imagine the feeling one would have when watching their own child harvest their first deer. GREAT BUCK and great story! Thanks for sharing

Congrats. to your son and you.

I was planning a fun hunting season with my son this year but He broke his femmer in a football game last week. Had surgery on Wed. and will be in a full leg cast for 8 weeks. It will make it hard but we will still give it our all. Just spending the time with him is what it is all about.

A fine first buck! Congrats to the boy ! I can hardly wait the next couple of years before I can take my oldest on his first deer hunt. You're a great inspiration.

Doesn't get any better then that...can't wait til my boys can hunt. The story is the real trophy and that buck is the cherry on top! Congrats
