Went to strawberry Monday with my brother to look around our favorite deer hunting spot. Only saw 6 does. My spot is totally over run with elk 6 big bulls to speak of 2 of them with some extra trash. 150 head total no bs either. I will go back with my camera next days off and get some pictures. Anyone needing help finding a bull?

Wish I had a tag on the Wasatch!!! I just wanted to tell you thanks for your attitude and willingness to help out other hunters. That is what makes sites like this!!!

After 13 years I have a Wasatch Elk Tag. Any help in locating a place to hunt would be much appreciated. I have no idea where to start.

I try to help where I can. I will need help if I get lucky enough for a henrys tag! Handgunner I sent you a PM.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-29-09 AT 02:15PM (MST)[p]I will check back with you later, thanks

I have seen some good bulls already on the wasatch, some with very good tine length already...I don't mind telling other hunters where some good bulls are..

Easy there KTC - I need as much help as I can get. I have never hunted elk before with a rifle, so I need a little guidance! :)

Hopefully I was able to help everybody that sent me a PM. Good luck to everyone this fall looks like its shaping up to be a good one!

Hey Cory,
Dont panick, i am sure that the areas that both you and Chad have hunted already will pay off big. We will still keep an eye out there for ya. Oh ya I have to ask. How big of a bull ya lookin for? Are you plannin on takin the whole hunt off? keep lookin and keep ur chin up cause ur on a collision course with a big stinky

elk,

A rifle? Oh boy you just did the ultimate sin! It should be slightly easier than your stick. Talk to ss and make sure you check/keep an eye on the spot I gave him to look. Now and again a real smoker shows up. I am talking 350+ not 440 like some guys!;-)

Just got back from another scouting trip - the hunt can't get here soon enough.

Lambo,
No panic yet, just always open to big bulls or good areas that I am not totally familiar with. I am sure our regular stomping grounds will be where I end up on the hunt and it should produce just fine. However, if I find a real smoker somewhere else I am going to remain flexible. I would love to kill a 350+ bull, but being realistic I will not pass up a good looking 330-340 type bull even on the first day. I just want a bull that looks good to me. I am taking the entire hunt off including two full days prior to the opener on 9/12.

KTC,
I am going to pack both the bow and rifle, but I won't pass up a good shot opportunity with the rifle if it is a good bull. Thanks for the intel you shared with Chad - I will get with him and check that area out as well. I really appreciate the help! I won't be passing up a 350 type bull on this hunt I can guarantee you that :)

Put both on a scale and make your brother carry the heavier one! No need to worry about the first time rifle thing. Just ask ktc, it's as easy as point and shoot.:D I'm pretty sure you need to let us know where you are camped. I can already taste the ribeye celebration after the kill. I hope you don't think I'm blowing smoke when I say the ponies are at your disposal. I only blow smoke with ktc!

It's always an adventure!!!

Cory,
get Chad and come out to the house in the next week or so and I will show you the bull that we passed on last year. He's the one I told you about. We have already made a positive ID on him this year. I have some great footage of him and he's in the same area.

Cory,
Sounds like you goals are realistic, everybody wants the big 400 plus but there just aint many of them. 330-350 is a great goal. Good idea scoutin two days before the season starts, you'll know right where to be at daylight on the first morning. I have a couple of places in mind that we will watch while huntin spikes. One of them is where my dad killed his bull a couple of years ago, i seen a 350 caliber bull in this same area just last year. But he'll be where you find him. If ya want ta talk more Chad might have my number or you can pm me. It'll be here before U know it

Jim,
Thanks for the generous offer to use your horses-that is much appreciated!! Chad still owes me for packing his Idaho bull out a couple of years ago in some God forsaken blow-down infested hell hole, but we are both smart enough to use horses when they are available :) I will see what Chad's schedule is like this coming week and we will get in touch to stop by and touch base with you.

Lambo,
Thanks for your help as well and I will keep in touch with you through the summer and the bowhunt.

Cory,

That Idaho bull was in an easy canyon!! What are you talking about?? J/K.

Jim,

We will be down. I will call you after I talk to Cory.

Ty,

I thought the rifle rut hunt had bulls behind every tree!!

Lambo,

I'll Keep in touch.

i love all these wasatch posts with people seeing tons of 370 plus bulls on the wasatch and multiple bulls with trash lol i guess over night the wasatch is holding giant bulls behind every bush! sorry folks the wasatch has some great bulls but nothing like some of these guys are talking about, sorry if a seem annoyed i just read a similar post from a guy saying on the wasatch this weekend he saw like 6 bulls over 350 and several 380s lololol its easy to throw numbers out like that, it's like the famous i saw 3 30'' bucks up at straberry!! no ya didnt bud you saw 3 23'' bucks at strawberry running away from you at 200 yards and you were looking at them with your tasco 8x8s! this is my negative post of the month..... good luck to all scouters

I went to Strawberry on Fri., we saw about 40 bulls, none of which I would have shot on the last day. There were two six-pointers maybe 300-320.

the thing about the elk hunt there is you gotta get off the road there are plenty of elk around even if you walk aimlessly through the trees your bound to see something.

I catch a fish every other cast at Strawberry with a 5lb minimum, evey 6 point bull I see is atleast 350, and every 4 point buck I see is atleast 180. That's why I live in Wasatch county! :)

Can't wait to see what the Wasatch produces this year! Good luck!

Hey there,
I am new to the board and saw your message. I have been scouting the Wasatch myself and have seen several decent bulls. I have a friend who has a archery big bull tag and I am trying to help him. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Here is some advice, dont listen to people that tell you they have 4 380 bulls spotted cause its bull crap! If you spend your time scouting and hunmt really hard you have a chance at a decent bull, keep in mind 95 percent of the "mature" bulls on that unit are 310-325.

I very much agree. My brother and I both had tags last year for the wasatch, after very long hard days of hunting I ended up with a 320 bull which was the second biggest one we saw out of probably 50 bulls, and my brother ended up with a 350 bull. now this year may be a little different bacause of water helping out a little with antler growth but I agree with muleycraz, most mature bulls are in the 310-325 range on the Wasatch.

Thanks for the info. The biggest bull I have seen on my camera will push 310. After reading all these posts it sounds like I should be looking in other areas.

Hey muleycraz,

Just because they might have 4 380's picked out, does not mean that you saw them or did not see them!! I would venture to say that you do not cover ever square foot of the wasatch unit, and if you say you do than, I would bet you are lying as well!!!

I will agree with the fact that the unit is rapidly declining, yet a year like this will do wonders for that unit!!

So, as far as everyone saying that their is absolutely no more big bulls up there are completely wrong.

Anyone that has drawn this unit should shoot DAMN nice bulls, if they put out the effort, if not they will go home with nothing or alot of tender young meat!!!

Well said Big! The unit is definitely not what it used to be, but there are some quality bulls on that unit. You just have to work a little harder for them and have a little luck on your side as well! Good luck to all with tags!

LAST EDITED ON Jul-10-09 AT 02:19PM (MST)[p]your right!!! Dang I wonder if the dwr will let me switch my dutton tag for the wasatch tag! Im willing to go home with nothing or a 380 on my hunt and there is a chance i will blank because 380 bulls just are not arounf every tree and it sounds like the wasatch is a fore sure thing for a 380 so i better look into that switch.

I'm just glad to have the opportunity to hunt there as I'm used to seeing Over the counter bulls in CO for the last few years and most of them haven't had time to grow. I'm not complaining as every opportunity in the elk woods is a gift.

This Wasatch hunt is going to be a treat. All the hill work with 50+ lb pack and shooting the bow will hopefully pay off. if it doesn't it won't be for lack of effort. If I have a nice bull in front of me am I going to know if it's a 280 or 340 bull? Probably not. I haven't bowhunted many years yet so there is much to learn.

Great reply ironranger!!

I too have a tag for the Wasatch this year (any weapon tag drawn at the expo) and can't tell you how grateful/lucky I am just to be able to hunt a limited entry elk unit in Utah, even if the sky is falling as some say and every single bull on the unit is "only" a 300" bull. A 300" bull is bigger than anything I have ever killed before, so works for me :) I have never hunted a limited entry unit in Utah before, so I am stoked no matter the size of the bulls I see or kill. I know one thing - I will have a blast just being out in the woods knowing that I can shoot a big bull (big in my eyes and no one else)IF the opportunity presents itself. Whatever ends up happening, I will be thankful for the opportunity and everything I experience and learn on the hunt!!

We have all gotten WAY too hung up on inches of antler in Utah rather than just enjoying the experience for what it is!!

Good luck to all chasing the "pisscutters" this year :)

Cory

You guys will both have great hunts no doubt about that! There are tons of bulls on the unit you will see a lot of elk every day and you will have the time of your lives out there. Last year was my first LE hunt as well and wow what an experience. Cory, nice on ya for drawing the EXPO tag, that is the same tag I had last year. Good luck to you both.

Agreed that it's a great fun unit to hunt, and there are some great big bulls-but not many 350+.

It just doesn't compare to what it use to be and surely doesn't compare to the units down south.

Wasatch seemed to peak around '04.

I have helped alot of my family on this unit I dont think this unit peaked in 04 we harvested a 370 and a 340 in 06 in 07 I had the tag saw alot of 325 330 bulls but hunted 2 bulls that were big 350+ had both bulls twice under 100 yards just in some thick stuff and couldnt close the deal alot of it is genes the bulls for years would have great fronts 1st 2nds short 3rds good 4ths and short 5ths and the mains were short . I will not dog this hunt it is one of the funnest hunts you will ever do. I dont think it was to long ago someone on MM was asking how old was this bull and it was older scored like 320ish it is gene thing on that unit along with water feed quality, get out there and scout alot and were some boot leather out. goodluck

Muleycrazy,

Why don't you take your Dutton tag and your negative attitude and go someplace else. There are in fact 380 bulls on the Wasatch and just because you can't find them does not mean they do not exist. The majority of the bulls as stated by everyone on this thread is 300-320. That is a fact, but don't act like cause you have not seen the bigger bulls, that you "know" they are not out there. There are very few of them, but they do exist.

This has been a great year for antler growth and it is showing on the bulls. I wish you luck on the Dutton. That unit has some solid bulls and a giant pile of rocks! My good friend is archery hunting LE elk there this year. Should be a great year no matter the unit!

you know whats funny as hell!! I watched abull pushing 390 on the winter range on the wasatch last year and he was with 7 other bulls 2 of which were in the upper 360s. Go back and read my posts!! I never said there were no big bulls on the wasatch I said they are not around every tree and that people do a great job at saying they see them all over the place when in reality the bull they saw was not as big as they thought. I hunted the wasatch last year infact, and we were hunting a 375 bull for 7 days and had to settle for a lesser bull. Now why would I say there are NO!!!! big bulls on the wasatch when I was hunting one last year???? Get your facts right my entire point on these posts was to express my opinion that 95 percent plus, of the bulls on the wasatch are 330 or less and if you are seeing 3 380s to every 10 bulls then wow I wanna start hunting with you!!

Bottom line is who cares, if you guys think or know there are a bunch of 380 type bulls on the wasatch then good on ya. This is a dumb argument lol sorry for bursting peoples buttons on this wasatch post. On a lighter note just like someone said earlier how about that horn growth, pretty darn excited myself? This could be the best antler growth year in a long while

bigthree, that is my bull your talking about. It was a 9 year old bull that ended up at 320. The wasatch is a very fun hunt to be on. No doubt you all with tags will have the time of your life. You will see tons of bulls each day, and I myself would love to have that tag again.

Hi- I have a few decent looking deer on trail cam. I haven't found the monster elk yet and I have a Wasatch Archery Any Bull tag. If you would like to share photos and information let me know and I can email you some photos. I will try to find out how to post pictures as well.

I just hope that with all the fires down in that area of southern Utah, and with it being as dry as it is that Mt Dutton, Beaver, Monroe, Pahvant, and the rest of the units dont end up charred.
Mulycrazy, I have heard from other reliable sources that there are some great bulls to be had down in that area. With the water year that we have had, I'm sure that this year very well could produce better than last year. Remember though that Spidey is dead, but maybe you can kill one of his much smaller boone and crocket offspring. Lets hope so, just keep us posted.Have a great hunt
Happy trails
