I drew an elk tag for unit 51 in New Mexico, muzzleloader Dec 5-9. Looking for any info on the unit. Also would like suggestions on loads for 50 cal inline muzzleloader since NM has no restictions. Thanks

150 grs of tripple 7 pellets with a barnes spitfire tmz 245 gr bullet. sight dead on for 200 yards and you should have no problems with a kill from 0 to 250 yds. Those things buck the wind way better than the powerbelts and other like bullets because they are one of the few bullets that have a boat tail. Those muzzy bullets get tore up by the wind if you aint got a boat tail. And if you don't plan for wind in NM your just plain stupid. You can bet if it is snowing in utah it is blowing in NM. as for 51...... got me.

Stinky I bought some 777 pellets and since herd lots of pros and cons. I have not shot it yet. My question is what kind of luck have you had with the 777? I was leaning towards the powerbelts but you make an interesting point on the boat tail. I am heading to NM this fall.

In my humble opinion, each muzzleloader tends to like a different combo of powder, grains, bullets. I agree with StinkStomper though and would stay away from PowerBelts. I have never had good luck with them in any of my muzzy guns. Maybe I've just had bad luck with them. My experience has been that the Barnes and Hornady bullets are best in my guns anyway.

from white muzzys to knight to tc's I've never had a muzzy that didn't shoot a barnes with pellets and not be accurate. I would definitely go with the lighter bullet an velocity though. I shot a big bullon my first muzzy hunt with a 545 gr buffalo bullet square in the shoulder at 40 yards n never found the bull. 1400fps. I found him n put a 300gr expander mz barnes in the same shoulder at 125 yds 1700 fps. I never found that bull n swore to never shoot another bull in the shoulder again. last year I shot a very mature 341 nm bull at 260 yards in 30 mph winds. I misjudged the wind and hit that bull dead center of the shoulder with a 245 gr barnes spitfire tmz. It passes completely through the shoulder n exited the neck. the bull made it 60 yds. that is unbelievable for a muzzy. as far as the 777 pellets go the cleanup is easy but the slightest amount of moisture left in the barrel jacks ur accuracy. clean it by dampening a cloth in ur mouth and run it through the barrel twice. that's pretty much it. never pour water in the barrel like some people had told me to do cuz it always leaves moisture in the barel. after each shot run a saliva soaked patch in and out and u can shoot ur gun 20 or 30 times before a major cleaning. hope this helps.

btw: I chronied the 245gr spitfire with a 150gr charge just at 2300 fps. that's movin for smoke pole. n sorry for the grammar tonight. im workin and internetting on my phone which isn't easy.

i use 250 gr tmz with 3 pellets (150 gr) of triple 7. shoots like a dream. I also see a noticeable difference when I use the Variflame primer adapters with small rifle primers. I highly recommend them.
