Going on my first elk hunt and I am wondering if cow calling will be of any assistance for a late season hunt or is that just going to attract cat?

Play it by ear. If it is anything like last year they were extremely vocal for the first week of November. I'm sure cow calling would have helped locate. There were still bulls chasing cows. Good luck. I don't know where your tag is for but any late season elk tag is a good tag to have.

It's always an adventure!!!

I would not go elk hunting without my Sceery ACE 1 cow call.Hunting Colorado I have heard elk being vocal thru the end of October. If nothing else other cows will come t investagate the call and maybe a bull will fallow.

I have only hunted onetime in early Nov. and I heard vocal elk.Take a call along, can't hurt.

Take the call with you, you are not as likely to "call something in" that time of year but at the very least you can mew a couple times if you stumble or make to much noise. that tends to settle things down sometimes.

That being said, if you have an either sex tag be careful you dont end up in someones crosshairs.

+1 AWLB, It has been my theory for a long time that cows will cycle in Late October or early November if they don't breed in September. You may not get the bulls to come running in, however more times than not they will answer a cow call and at least give you an idea of their location. I never go elk hunting without my cow calls no matter the time of year!!!!

I don't necessarily use my cow calls to "call" elk. Many times i use it whem i'm coming through the timber making noise that i simply can't avoid, this seems to help keep a herd calm.

Besides the tips given above, a cow call will stop almost any bull dead in his tracks for a few seconds giving you a clean shot. On my late hunt last year, the cows were very vocal and the young bulls were even bugling and grunting a bit in the early morning. But I don't think you'll call a big bull in from a distance in November.
