It's amazing how time flies! 48 hours from now we'll be back up on the mountain. After sweating our way up the mountain we'll sit, freezing while waiting for it to get light just hoping that a monster buck is in the draw below.

The way things are looking right now we won't be cold for long though. Weather is going to be dry with highs in the low to mid 70's in Northern and highs in the low to mid 80's down South. Sure the warm dry weather won't help our odds at harvesting a buck much but I'm very relieved to know that it's going to be this way. Our deer herd doesn't need to take another pounding like it did last year. Even with the warm, dry weather I'm sure a few of you are going to do just fine and can't wait to see the pictures. :) Good luck to everyone and don't forget your camera!

I hope you all have a fun and safe hunt.

Good luck!

Right back at ya NvrEnuf!

Time hasn't really seemed to fly for me though. I can't recall a longer week than this one has been in a long time. Perhaps it's because I wasn't able to make it out last year due to my 2nd son being born, so I'm feeling extra anxious this year. Regardless, I too am glad we'll be having somewhat mild weather. It's better for the deer, and I'll have my 6 year old boy (my oldest) with me on his first big game hunt. Gotta start 'em off young right?! I'm hoping for a good buck (we've seen a couple up in our area this year), but it'll be hard not to drop the hammer on anything with antlers this year (not likely with a spike though). It's been a couple of years since we've had any venison in the freezer, and I'd really like to tag out with my boy there, so he can see everything unfold, and know what hunting is all about. Hopefully he'll be able to experience every aspect of it from the spotting, to the shooting, to the cleaning, and the work of getting it back to camp. Regardless of whether we get one or not, if he wants to do it again next year, then I'll consider it a successful hunt, and my mission will be accomplished. :) Hopefully we'll have some pics to share when it's over.

Good Luck to you, and to everyone this year! Hunt Smart, and Hunt Safe!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-20-05 AT 11:11AM (MST)[p]NvrEnuf....you gonna wait and shoot another 30"er on "our" birthday again? :) Good luck man....look forward to seeing the pics when you get back.

eyeguard....good luck to you too! Your boy will have a blast if nothing else. Brought mine with me last weekend for the opener here, he's only 3, and he had a blast!

Eyeguard, I bet you're excited about this year! That's great that you are taking your boy out and spending some time with him during the hunt. I'm also going to take my oldest boy out (5yrs) a couple of times with me this year on the rifle hunt after things settle down a bit. He went once or twice on the muzz hunt and he's convinced now that he can keep up with me anytime, anyplace. :) Little does he know that a measly 1 hour hike wouldn't even put a dent in the trecks he'll be making with me here in a few years. ;-) I figure I'll hit it hard myself for a couple of days to start things off and when I'm half worn out I'll let him show me how tough he is. :)

Muleyslyr, thanks man. I'll tell you what, if I can nail another 30" buck on or even close to my birthday I guarantee you I won't need anything else to make it a very, very HAPPY one! :) I keep thinking one of these days my luck has to run out. I just hope it's not this year, or next, or the next! :)

You're taking your three year old out huh. Man you're really starting him young! He'll be an expert by the time he's 14. Very cool. It's fun packing the little fellers around on your shoulders and listening to all the funny things they have to say isn't it. I remember when my boy was 3yrs old. Every 5 steps or so he'd point out a pile of deer crap or a deer track in the mud! Each time he did it the excitment in his voice was as if he'd just actually taken his first buck!!! A couple of weeks ago I was eating some pine nuts and he thought I had a handful of deer puky! It was hillariuos! They sure are funny little fellers at that age.

Glad to hear that you guys are taking your boys out and spending time with them. That really is whats most important.

Best of luck to both of you.

Ok so reading these maybe it is that time. I was thinking of taking my step son out on a few upland game hunts. but hadn't thought about taking him on a deer hunt yet. I just might do that monday morning.

I'm excited too!
Even though with all the scouting I've done and come up empty handed.
Sitting here at work, I'm already mentaly gone.

It's good to see some of you are taking your boys with you. Means that I won't have to worry about you paying me a visit on my ridge. :)
I actually have 2 boys. A 4 year old and the other is turning 1 on the 28th. They are still too much into thier mommy for me to take them out. Besides, I've got only few years left to hone my hunting skills before I start taking them out. I've got some serious hunting to do between now and then.

Good luck to you all!

I would say, let the 2 points and spikers go. Only harvest one if you have a young hunter with you. And take the spikes over 2 points. I hear that is a genetic defect the fact that the spike didn't fork out.

Hey 190,

I've got 2 boys as well. Like I posted previously, I'm taking my oldest, but my youngest turns 1 on the 28th also. I never was the "Great White Hunter" type, so now I just have more of an excuse if I don't tag out. :)

I really hope to be able to hold out for a nice one if possible. We don't really ever see any spikes up in our neck of the woods. I think the last spike I ever saw was about 13 years ago, and we did pass on it. I'd never heard that about spikes (that it's a defect). If that is the case, that is a little more incentive to cull them out of the herd.

This could be the subject of an entirely new post I'm sure, but what do you think the odds are if I took a spike... would I get an "Atta Boy!" for taking one for the team all for the sake of the gene pool, or would I get scolded for not holding out for a more mature buck? Hmm, that would be interesting to see.

My daughter, son and I leave first thing in the morning and we're all way too excited. My son wants to shoot the first buck he see's and get his first one down. My daughter is holding out for a 4x4 that would be bigger than the one she got last year.

Good luck to everyone and think Safety First!

Less than 24 hours and I am off to the hills. Good luck to everyone, hopefully we will all have some great pictures and fun stories to tell when we get back. Im holding out for 4x4 or better, so we'll see how it goes.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!

HELL YEAH!!! Havent hunted deer for 2 years!!! Due to the crappy, awesome dedicated hunter program!! Cant complain too much, got 2 nice bucks out of it.....

THE STATE IS ABOUT TO TURN ORANGE!!!

I PREFER CAMO!!!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!

THE ONLY bobcat SUGGESTING TO 'THINK' BEFORE YOU SHOOT,MAYBE LET THE NOMAD BUCK LIVE ONE MORE YEAR!!!

!! I use to take my kids. The girls 2 refuse to clean my deer for me so they won't go!! Even though so much fun did they have and have both killed and love the hunt and camp they just don't like to kill the bambi. My son on the other hand will take me with him since he dosn't have a horse to help him pack. I am still trying to reckon why on gods earth he would pick the steepest rocky snake infested ugly mountain in the State. I have been praying all week he don't kill a back in there!! But the lord is bound and determined to make my back hurt!! If I see a nomad buck within 60 miles of camp he is dead!! And I wouldn't shoot a little one. I am still trying to find a hunting hat that is not made in China. I have looked in every store in the country including Idaho. Any clues?
May the Nomad buck live on unless he is in my camp!! So many bucks under my belt. I just hope the son gets a wall hanger. Don't know if there is anything finer except frog fur.
Lucks to ya all and if ya stop by my camp your welcome to a cup of joe.

That young fella sure looks happy! Congrats on your buck and on being able to share the time with your son.

I came back from helping a buddy's elk hunt in Wyo. over Monte Cristo, we saw one 2x2 buck in a truck........nothing hanging in any camps along the way....
