I was thinking about hunting in unit 76 for elk this year, Ive heard the elk herd isn't doing so well, anyone know about it.

The herd is doing badly, yes. Fish and Game cut a total of 300 tags from the area. 200 for cow, 100 for bull this year. If that isn't a sign of the times, I don't know what is.

I used to hunt this area for elk and have had pretty good success, harvesting several elk including some nice Pope and Young Bulls. However, the unit has gone down hill over the past few years. There are a few archers that score but not what it used to be

Back in the 90's there use to be a very good elk heard in this unit, but we quit hunting it in the early 2000's because of the drastic decline in the heard. We have a friend that lives in Auburn Wy and has said there has been a steady decline for at least the last 10 years.

I think its just overharvest, they have an early cow hunt, archery hunt, rifle permit hunt, late cow hunt and late, late, cow hunt. Oh yeah, and the trophy bull hunt too.

There are a few wolves in that area as well. We have ran across wolf collars, with no wolf connected, hanging in trees. Apparently someone was a good shot. The last few years the elk have been more and more silent come the rut. In my opinion that is a sign that wolves are around.

I hunted it several years ago and we had fun. Always found elk but success was limited. It was a fun bowhunting trip with friends and family with low expectations.

Can a guy still go in and have a fun hunt even though the herd is banged up a bit and the quality is down?... or don't bother? I'm just looking for an OTC archery elk hunt and still think this is probably my best option considering I've hunted it in the past. Who knows... maybe just a waste of time and energy?

The banged the heck out of the bulls and cows fot the last five years to help the deer herd, and now they both suck. What gives?
