I never thought it would happen

Put a 45 minute stalk on a buck in NW Colorado Saturday afternoon. Shot him when he stood up out of his bed. He ran about 60 yds and dropped. Gutted him out, dragged him down by the road. Left him in some sage brush and walked the mile back for my truck. Got back with the truck and saw the drag marks to the road and no deer. I guess somebody wanted him more than I did.

We've got some "real hunters" out in the field with us.

Never, Never, drag your buck all the way to the road and leave it. Leave your buck 200 to 300 yards up in the woods or atleast that far from any road. I would never expect anyone to take my deer either BUT we live in a different world these days you can never be to careful. I hope you hadn't tag thet buck yet!!!

Sorry to hear the bad news . I do know how you feel though , when I was 13 I shot my first buck , a big beautiful 28 in 4x5 , on my grandpas ranch below Chama NM. On our way home to Gallup , we stopped in Farmington to fill up , and everybody at the gas station gathered around the truck and horse trailer to look at mine and my dads bucks(my dads was a smaller 4x4) . Nonethe less , my dad told me to stay at the truck while he went in to pay , but I went in to ask for some snacks . Thats when a guy came running in to yell that someone had just taken a deer head out of the truck , needless to say , a old piece a crap car was haulling butt down the road , and we had a horse trailer on . I wanted to die or kill those thieves, but all I have to remember that buck is a couple poleroid pictures . I'm 32 now , and have never shot a buck over 23 in since . Sorry to go on , but I do feel your pain/anger , too bad we gotta have such idiots in our society.....NMHUNTNUTT

Sorry to hear that. I've never had a deer stolen but my family has. They had a couple bucks hanging in their front yard and some slugs stole them. I even heard of a guy who had a bull elk stolen at gunpoint just after he shot it.

I shot a small 4 point Sat. and had it the back of the truck while my brother and sons continued hunting. I could see the truck from the ridge I was sitting on. A truck pulls up, a guy gets out, looks in the truck, then glasses the ridge. when he sees me, he gets back into the truck and leaves. If I wasn't there I think my buck would have been gone.

I hope you did have it tagged because, if I recall correctly, it is illegal to move an animal in Colorado until you have it properly tagged.

Sorry to hear what happened to you. Did you try reporting this to the Division of Wildlife and asking for a replacement tag?

Mark

Did you take pictures at the kill site? If you did maybee you could post them so we could keep an eye out for it.
