For some reason the hunting gods have it in for me. I went into the area Scott (Sniper) and I are planning to take our boys hunting this year. The morning was perfect, overcast, no wind. I walked about 1.5 miles in as the crow flies. Got set up on this point and started glassing. Glassed up three does. Packed up my gear and went in another mile, to a ridge I've never had time to check out. When I got to the top of the saddle I was just about to set up when the wind started blowing, then it started sprinkling, then it started raining, harder, harder. I got underneath a juniper hoping to stay dry, ha. Then all of a sudden a lightnig bolt hit about 200 yards from where I was sitting.

Now they tell you not to sit under a tree during a lightning storm, yeah right, the people that say this have probably never been in one. There is no way I was going to lay down out in the open with water running all around me.

I layed under that tree for two hours in the fetal position, soaking wet, holding my ears, getting very close to God. There must have been over fifty lighting bolts that hit very close to where I was.

By this time it was 3:00 pm. The lightning had slowed down but the rain had no end. I finally said "thats it, I can't take any more of this." I got my stuff and made a Bee-line down the ridge back towards the four wheeler. Two hours later I made it to the bike. Now all I have is a five mile ride back to the truck.

I'm glad I didn't get pulled over on the way home, It would have been pretty funny saying, " Yeah Ossiffer the reason i'm naked is; it's like this, I was in this lightnig storm and..." :)

You gotta love it!!!:)

Hey Crazy,
I feel for you. I have had the pleasure of having lightning strike very close to me on a couple of occasions. The closest was about 35 yards. I believe I wet my pants, but I can't be sure because I was crying so hard it was difficult to keep a level head. Truth be told, that was a cool experience, but I don't think I want to get that close to lightning ever again.

BTW, where you carrying a tripod for glassing? I would have gotten rid of that thing like a steaming hot potato. Glad you're still around.

Thanks Quail,

Not only did I have a metal tripod, I also had a 30.06 strapped over my shoulder. Call it crazy, stupid, ignorant, whatever, I wasn't leaving it behind.

Crazy...wow! What an adventure! Glad you're alright and made it back in one uncooked piece! I'v enot had the pleasure of having an encounter like your's nor do I want to. Glad you're safe and I've heard from Sniper that the area you're speaking of and it sounds great. Good luck to you and your boys this year!

How were you going to keep the lightning striking your Metal Skull Cap???????????LOL, glad you were not hurt..........Allen

Glad to hear your back Allen. I talked to PW yesterday and he gave me the scoop about the 30" buck you missed. he he

Hope you all had a great time.

What really happened is I missed a 15" buck twice, so I am calling it 30".............There were not any big bucks to look at, so we settled for the best we could find............

Good deal! Hopefully you will hit pay dirt in Mexico, maybe New Mexico, maybe both. I think you should ask PW to send you some spuds so you can practice out to 800 yards. When you can hit six in a row, then your ready. :)

I'll probably give my butt ripped for that last comment by the ethics patrol, what I meant was 150 yards.:)

I'm with you Crazy about the potato shoot. I'll give him those little tiny red potatoes (creamers) to shoot at. If you can hit one of those at a couple hundred yards...you're defiantely reday!

I sure am envious of that Mexico hunt, I haven't had a chance to try to talk to my farming buddies yet. Maybe I'll get to it one of these days. Who knows, I just might have to spend money. The more I think about it, the less I want to try it on my own!

Good luck all...and Bura...don't get carried away with those pretty little senioritas down there...chicas bonitas! Ariba!

crazyaboutcoues, I posted a message in the mule deer forum called "Help with NM Unit 37" and was told you may know something about the unit or I might could get some maps from you. If you wouldn't mind, could you drop me a line at [email protected]. Thanks in advance.
