Book Cliffs - San Arroyo cow advice

The kid and I drew Book Cliffs-San Arroyo cow tags. We have never hunted this area before. Just wondering if we could get a little help on where to start looking to find some cows.

The season dates run along with the general season/spike elk hunts. I know this is a low elevation hunt and the hunt unit is pretty flat. We put in for it because it will be easier for the kid to get around and getting a downed elk out should be easier also. Any help would be appreciated. PM me if you have any advice on where to start looking.

Here's a link to the map for the hunt unit.

Boundary is I-70 from the colorado line to Diamond-Cottonwood Canyon road, north on Diamond-Cottonwood canyon road to Campbell Ranch & the escarpment, north-east along the escarpment to the colorado state line. South along the state line to I-70. I'm not sure where the San Arroyo towers or McCook ridge is located in relationship to the hunt area. I've never the hunted Books\San Arroyo before, but didn't think I had enough points to draw a cow hunt area I'm more familiar with.

Good luck, its down in the desert.it may take a little luck for them to even be in that area. there is a heard that stays down there, but your unit is only a small piece.

Anyone been out in the San Arroyo area and have any info on elk numbers and good starting spots. Also looking for info on a good camping spot

Just wondering if any archery hunters happened to see any elk down low in the Books - San Arroyo unit or if anyone has info on a good watering spot.

I just don't have time to get down scouting with work this year, but planning on going down a couple days before the opener and would like to have an idea of where to start looking.
