Just wanted to see what the deer herd looked like in your region.. Size, numbers etc.
As for northern I saw 10 bucks sat, 8 2pts, spike and a three point. The buck to doe ratio was good but NO quality. Russ

I hunted the Northern Region as well and did not see those types of numbers. Where in the northern region were you hunting. I am looking for somewhere that I can get a small buck.

I hunted the Central Unit. We saw 20-25 deer. 5 bucks...3 small 3 points/2 points, and the 4 point I killed and another smaller 4 point my friend killed.

I hunted the NE unit. We saw 8 bucks over the weekend, six 2 points and two 4 points. I shot one of the 4 points and we saw the other get wounded. We saw 3 bucks in trucks and they were all 4 points.
In two days we saw over 100 deer. Most of the does had two fawns and the looked healthy. Hopefully this is good sign for the future.

I wasn't hunting (killed my deer on the bow hunt) but I went hiking around Sat morning in the Central unit. Saw about 35-40 deer, one spike, four two points and a decent 3x3. Deer semmed to be in very good shape and most does had a fawn or two with them. Not a whole lot of shooting going on and most hunters where staying on the roads with there ATV's. Too bad some of them where going down roads they are not supossed to.

We hunted the Southern Region out near Indian Peak. ZILCH..
Seen more wild horses than deer. Wonder when they'll start a season on them??? They were cool to see though!
maybe 15 does....One small 2-point that the world was shooting at....

Souteastern region up 6 mile canyon, I asw about 15 does/fawns all looked healthy, and one 2 point that was with some of the does that is now being processed for me

I hunted the Central Unit up Provo Canyon. I saw maybe 25 deer, one 3x4 that I passed on, four 3-points, at least ten 2-points, one smaller 4-point about 18-20 inches wide that I passed on and then watched some other guy shoot it. Then I saw the buck I took which is a 22" 4x5, extremely heavy and tall. All this took place before 8:15 am opening morning. A lot of deer but a ton of hunters. I'm not sure any of the bucks I saw made it out alive.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-25-05 AT 04:45PM (MST)[p]Central, general tag. We saw about 15 bucks with 7 two points running in one group together. Saw a couple of great bucks, one going in the 170 class. He was about 450 yards away but we were on the Muzzle hunt. To bad for us...too many does, not enough bucks.

Southeast, 5 bucks. 1 3x3 18" wide, 2 4x4 22" wide, 1 1x2 12" wide, 1 4x4 with eyegaurds and deep forks 23" wide (now deceased) 5 does. Good ratio.

I hunted SE saw uncountible does i passed 8 two points before 12 oclock saturday.I passed one 3 point and then pulled the trigger on a 24 inch 4x4 with 3 1/2 inch eye guards my bro killed a a 20 inch 3x3 with 3 inch eye guards my dad shot a 18 inch deep forked two point that was still in full velvet it had no nuts. our hunt was done by 12 saturday. All the deer looked heathly.

I was out in the Book Cliffs with my brother who had a tag. On Thursday they saw 40-50 bucks, and at least double that in does and fawns. It was awesome out there.

He shot his deer first thing Saturday morning. It was a 4x3 that was 19" wide with a big body. They did see a quite a few bucks that were bigger. He was in the McCook Ridge/Indian Ridge area.

Hunted Northern Region (Cache Valley) Saw 10 bucks, countless does. saw 2- 4 points, 2- 3 points, 6- 2 points. Killed the one 4 point. Only hunted Saturday and Tuesday.

I hunted the southern and saw only small bucks and big does but on the muzzleloader hunt a guy in our area shot a 33" 9x7 that scored around 210 N.T. and on the rifle hunt(at a different location) a guy killed a 37" 5x4 that scores in the mid 190's and then his son kills a 31" 208 gross typical four days later, both within 1/2 mile of a main road. Lucky suckers! I guess there were some big bucks in Utah.

muleygrande,

My cousin helped the son cape and haul out his buck. Said it is every bit as big as what people are saying, and to watch for it in a hunting mag here in the future. Both his and his dad's buck ran right through their old camp site before crossing the road prior to them getting shot. He's going to send me some pics of the son's monster here shortly. I'll drop you a pm when I get them if you're interested in seeing the 208 typical. The unfortunate thing I heard is that the Dad didn't know how to cape a buck out, so the 37"er's cape was ruined. Damn shame on such a nice buck! :-(

I went back up on the mountain yesterday (Thursday) with two of my cousins and a buddy and there were deer everywhere! This was in the Central Region, and the same basic area I hunted on the opener, but oh what a difference a few days made! They missed a couple real nice four points yesterday morning, and ended up killing a 2x2 and a great looking 4x6 last night just before dark.

I don't know if it was the impending storm, but we saw deer moving all day long. We watched several bucks chasing does and the 4x6 was swelled up like he was rutting already. I had more fun yesterday than I had actually filling my own tag last weekend!

Central region is in better shape around my parts than any time I can remember (30 years). I hope the DWR and hunters do their part to help this trend continue. Guys who just want blood on their hands need to keep this in mind before pulling the trigger tomorrow. Tomorrow is 2 point Saturday by the Utardeds. Hopefully the fog stays low and the 2 points cannot be seen.

Hunted SE area in Browns Hole. Nothing there but a couple of does with fawns. Switched area to hunt LaSal Mtns up near Pole Canyon saw lots of does with 1-2 fawns and all looked healthy. Took the only buck I saw Wednesday AM last day of the hunt in black oaks above old LaSal off road to Buckeye Res. Medium sized 3x2 with scrawny rack. He was running with good sized herd of does and fawns in black and red oaks. Most does carrying 2 fawns and looked healthy.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-29-05 AT 00:26AM (MST)[p]NORTHERN: I ran up on the hill after work tonight thinking that with all the rain last night and today deer would be getting out and moving. I was short on time and just decided to check out one of my favorite locations.

I saw a few doe a canyon over and continued climbing up the hill. The wind was good and I finally saw a deer about 275 yards up the hill from me. I glassed this deer up to find a willow horn 3 point raking his head in the oakbrush. I used the contours of the mountain to close the distance to about 175 yards - crawling the last 50 feet to get to a rise where I could see well.

I could hear another deer thrashing trees back in the oakbrush, but couldn't pick him out. I decided to wait him out. It wasn't five minutes and a good 4pt walked out. Upon first glance he looked GREAT - solid fronts and fair backs. He turned and looked in my direction - he had solid mass all the way up.

I decided that this "chance" buck would be a taker and put him down. I put a tape on him once back at the truck to verify that I thought he was about 21 inches wide. He's 21.5 wide and 18 tall. He's not the trophy buck I've been watching the past two years hoping to harvest, but he is a decent buck.

I'll post pictures tomorrow. I took the buck right before dark, field dressed with my headlamp, and drug him to the truck. I hung him and skinned him tonight (all done by 10:30PM) to cool out. I'll take a few pics of him caped out and post them.
