I have a question about bullets, I shoot a 300 WSM, and am shooting 180 gr nosler bullets. I was able to kill this 4 point buck this year after putting on a stalk in the thick quakies,I got to within 50 yards before I could get a clear shot,I was also lucky enough to kill a 5 point bull this fall at 70 yards. I found that the bullets didnt do much damage, maybe the 300 wsm shoots to fast at such a close range? Anybody have any comments
or experience with thi caliber rifle and what bullets work best?

Nothing at all wrong with that bullet. It's a good one. You probably just shot through ribs and didn't hit anything solid enought to really make the bullet expand. Shoot through the shoulders and you will see plenty of damage. If you hunt elk also with the same rifle, you have a good combo with that 180 NP.

If you hunt mainly deer and really want more damage, move down to a 150 gr. The extra speed will open up the bullet more. Or try a non premium bullet like the Winchester Powerpoint. It will open up more rapidly. Stay away from the Ballistic Tips. IMO, they do TOO much damage.

Beautiful buck there!

I SHOOT THE 300WSM/ 180 GR. NOS. PART. TOO, AND LOVE IT. ITS A GREAT COMBO,EVERY SHOT,ANGLE,AND IMPACT POINT IS DIFFERENT. YD.

DL,

You should just trade Kev for his Ultramag and you wouldn't have to be worried about bullet performance....jk

I shoot 180 Noslers and have been happy with the performance, especially on long shots. I think you were just a little too close this year.

I bet that buck looks better and better after each empty truck you passed this weekend. Dd you see anything on Sat.?

Looks like that deer is pretty dead to me? Any more questions?

Just raz'n ya, nice buck

zakly the reason i don't use partitions. they might be a real asset on moose, big coastal bears and in africa. don't really see a need for em on anything else. they work. but don't seem to do much if you make a good shot, i.e. lungs. guess maybe they're designed for bad shots ;).

We had a great time this weekend, 1 16 year old boy, 1 16 year old girl (Allie), 2 14 year old boys, a couple small bucks, a couple empty shells, a couple scared deer, a couple full rounds pumped out on the ground, and a couple new nicknames Too High Timmy, Malfunction maynard, 1 eyed Wilma. Yesterday my 14 year old nephew shot a spike and life cant get much better. Allie and I will take another crack at it Thursday, she wants to call this guy she asked to the girls dance and cancel so she can go hunting instead, what a great kid!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ps no more haynes bucks

Just curious, at what point during the deers death did the bullet fail.......LOL.

from the "Heartland of Wyoming"

DL,

Ahh, that brings back memories of when Uncle Jason and I first started out.

Sounds like Allie has her priorities in the correct order.
Hope you can find her something to shoot at this week.
If you had a N. tag I could outfit/guide you on a hunt on the field across from my dads house. There is a two point there every night, I saw him last night just as it got dark.

Good Luck!

DL,

Nice buck and the bullet looks like it performed fairly well..... I only see the buck complaining about it.
