Thanks again everybody. I seriously would have been plumb tickled to take any decent 4 point buck, this is way more deer than I expected to take this year with everything that I have had going on since early spring, (remodeled house, wedding and honeymoon, parents with health issues and a death in the family just a few weeks ago that interupted a planned bow hunt) I have not really had the chance to spend the kind of time outdoors that I would have liked to. As I said I was out looking to fill an antelope tag and in my meandering I came to a fork in the road (seriously
) on a creek bottom and I decided to go right which took me more out in the flats where I would find a goat to shoot, I went about a half a mile and decided that following the creek upstream would be more fun so back to the fork I went and went left. The furhter I got in there the better it looked and I switched mental modes and began glasssing all the rock ledges above the creek banks and all the classic muley haunts where you would expect to see one. About another half a mile upstream I spottted a set of ears, or maybe the ears spotted me, but in any case I was looking at a doe, and that doe turned into two more does that turned into 4 more does etc etc....... They got nervous and headed out up the creek bank and hill behind and this buck followed up behind. I gave him a grunt and he stopped to look and I nailed him.
Now to answer some of the questions.....
bobcat,
one shot offhand at about 100 yards, surprisingly I wasnt shaking at all. The gun had a bi-pod on it but I didnt have time to set it. I didnt make a perfect shot though which accounts for all the gore in the pics, if I would havve hit him about two inches lower it would have been a much prettier picture. Mrs Kid doesnt have a deer tag, but if you go to the lope forums you'll see a pic of her with her stink goat this year and she was first in the family to draw blood this year.
elkantlers,
Shot with a .260 Rem with 129gr handloads.
Azbowhunter,
That is the new Sturgis line if camo, most people dont recognize it right off the bat but you sir have a sharp eye. Seriously though, I have never really bought into all this camo crap for a rifle hunt, but maybe thats why I dont have pics like this up every single year either? I guess I feel like if I cant get within 250 yards of a critter then maybe he deserves to walk another day.
Deerking,
Thanks, from you that means alot as you consistantly put deer like this (usually much better) up here.
Kingfish,
Shhhhhhh, dont tell the deer its not an antelope, I darn near got him convinced. But on a serious note, I always try to apply for tags in the same area, sometimes I draw them and sometimes I dont. This year all my species are in the same boundaries so had I seen cow elk (rare but not out of the question) on the creek yesterday I could have popped her too.
oh and bobcat........ doesnt everybody have a scabbard on a Harley?
