LAST EDITED ON Oct-27-05 AT 05:16PM (MST)[p]Here is the story: I backpacked in the night before solo, just me, sleeping bag, tarp, and baloney sandwich, etc. up into the Mt. Naomi wilderness on the Cache Unit of Northern Utah. Next morning waited on a ridge in a saddle that I knew deer would cross if moved by other hunters. At 9:30 am I heard rocks moving below, so I got ready. At 50 yards this buck came running full speed, breathing hard and not aware of me or anything. I had no shot at buck running, at 10 yards all I could see was hair in the scope and I got worried that I would miss. It happened so fast. This buck just kept on coming right at me, just as he was bounding over my backpack I said to myself, "just point the barrel at him and shoot". I shot from the hip as he went by me at 6 FEET !!! the deer bounded off the rocks and went downhill, rolling fast. I dropped my gun and chased him hoping to stop my prize from becoming mangled at the bottom of the mountain. He stopped after 50 yards thank goodness not ten yards from going over the cliffs below ! He was dead and I was amazed at what just happened. I retrieved my gun and pack and actually stepped off the 6 feet from where I was standing and where the deer was when I shot. Unbelievable!!! I caped and boned him out. My packed weighed close to one hundred pounds! More than I could handle. I almost died trying to pack it out. I had to leave half the meat in a snowbank and some gear to retrieve the next day. I was very beat and sore. I guess it was worth it. He is a nice buck at 27 inches wide and 23 inches tall, four point, crabby front forks but nice. I am happy with him and it was a very memorable hunt. Enjoy the pics. Later Justin.
