Just a quick question, Does anyone have any info on the elk hunting around Navajo lake nad Kolob area? Mainly webster flat and Miners peak? Any info would be great.

miners peak i s all private so unless you have permission your s.o.l. but there are a lot of elk in there. anywhere on that open unit is tough unless you can hunt around miners peak and kolob which is all private. but most people that have land there dont let people hunt it so good luck with that. there is a few areas you can hunt on that unit that are public but they are kinda luck if ya kill one its tough hunting in there. my buddy and i hunt it every year and have only killed one in the last few years we stay on the public and hunt pretty hard..if only we could get on the private it maybe a diff story. websters flat is a ll private and they only go into select areas in there. anyway yes there is elk on the unit but few and far between and mostly raghorns. if you seen any bull in there spike to monster shoot it! probably wont see another! and i have also never heard a bugle on public land on that unit. so i wouldnt count on that. its ahrd hunting but you may get lucky.what are you planning rifle archery or muzz?

I hunted the youth tag on there a few years ago and was shocked that all the bulls were on the midway valleys. That unit is mostly private and they don't let family hunt on it. So good luck. Try over on strawberry ridge more. There is always a herd over in there. But then again there are 5900 hunters on the Zion hunting elk each year. Yes I made that number up. Say your prayers and hike off into some nasty places and you may get lucky. The archery is the better hunt.

I shot a 6x7 on Strawberry ridge in '99. The only elk I seen was the bull and a couple of cows he was with. With all the private property and all the hunters I won't be going back any time soon.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-31-09 AT 03:54PM (MST)[p]I am hunting that area this year as well. Between me and my buddies we have put in countless hours scouting the Elk, and figuring out how they respond to pressure and finding the places where they hole up. Many of the big bulls I am seeing there now, are going to cross over to the LE side....but that side also will get pressure from the deer hunters...I know plenty of people who have tagged big bulls over there...and no they were not on private property. A real good buddy of mine would be 3/3 there if not for the fact he drew back on a huge 5 point with out an arrow and dry fired at him... I have personally seen a 363 bull get shot there too. The sweet thing is there are some dandy bucks in there as well. So if you have both tags you will have a fun hunt. I have a secret honey hole with a tree stand set up on public land that I won't share but I will say if you beat the bush in the area north and west of Navajo Lake you may get an opportunity at an Elk it may be a cow or a spike but hey that's bow hunting!!!

My family has a small piece of property up there and I have spent a lot of time up there. I have hunted there many times and agree with all that has been said- with the exception of you "will" a crack at something in that specified area. You are gonna need to get wat back into the bush. Good luck to you. Someone always seems to get lucky.

This is my forte and have spent numerous hours and a ton of time on that mtn, both the panguitch LE side and the general unit side. The general unit side always has big bull shot off of it every year, but it usually goes to the guy that has the time to spend in that area. There is a ton of pressure and a ton of private land. Unless you are a back pack type hunter, i would maybe recommend trying a different unit. A lot of hunters from out of state hunt their cuz it is the 1st general elk unit and the 2nd general deer unit coming in from the south, i.e. las vegas and california. So if you hate 4 wheelers riding around at first light causing a ruckus and driving everyone nuts, you might not want to hunt there. But if you are one of them, you will probably fit right in. Don't expect to get any shots on a elk, just wish that you even see one.
