This has generally been a sufficient combo hunt to go on while accumulating points, but not this year...cloudless, blue skies with temps. hovering in the 60's...averaged 8 miles a day (12.5 miles opening day) and it was still tough not to run into orange. Finally got some snow (above 9000') on Fri. night and last night, but I had to leave early this morning. There's always a ton of camps in the 4 Mile Park and Middle Thompson Creek areas, but I've never ran into this much orange. Didn't here of alot of success in many of these camps either or from the DOW officer. Heard one guy got a nice 5X6, but that was it. While hunting I saw zero bulls/cows; 1 forkie; 6 does. Of course, in the 1st 20 mins. of my drive down the mountain I saw 12 does moving down off the low-level ridges. Oh well, I guess that's why they call it hunting and not harvesting. I do have an Eastern WY hunt (plus pheasants in SD next weekend!!!) to fall back on, but this was truly a frustrating start.

The weather sure wasn't too kind this year to Colorado or Utah. Sorry you didn't bag a buck, but it sounds like you got some good exercise:)

On the bright side, I think we're gonna see the landowner tag fiasco of Colorado this past year die way down. A lot of guys bought tags and ate tags this year. I doubt the prices will hold in 2006.

It'll be interesting to see how the third season pans out....

I guess this year was kind of a reality check for a lot of folks, myself included.

Better luck in 2006!

the third season will be better cause we just got a storm front that just got finished moving through and i dumped alot of snow on the grand mesa and uncompagre plateau.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-01-05 AT 01:02PM (MST)[p]Even though the weather was pretty bad for hunting this year, we did manage to get abull which was about the only elk we witnessed.

300,000 total elk!
125,000 on private land
75,000 on reservation
100,000 elk on public lands.

I've still came to the conclusion that the quality of hunting in Colorado pretty much sucks.
I think that Colorado should have a new motto:
"Colorado big game hunting, we don't sell elephant licenses because we don't have any. But then again we'll still sell you an elk license!"
