I have my little Godbrother that drew the 2nd hunt (Nov 5-9) and we are just looking for a legal buck because he is in college and don't have much time. Anyway, we know the unit pretty well and I was wondering where there have been some deer sighting (legal bucks)? I ask this question because some hunters that I have talked to that have been hunting 2b have seen lot's of does/forkies but not much on the legal side. Our hunting party is really undecided on where to go....high...low...please help if possible. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks lionking

hey LK

my bro had muzzle tag last sept! we saw few forks! 2 nice buck, but never had an opporunity for a shot! we hunt south of gas bugsy! plus another reason was weather! rained/snowed for 3 days straight

friend of my, NMTAXI's son bagged a fork on first deer hunt! congrats to him!..thats all i know..we tried Carassa mesa, no deer!

that's all i know of

Good to hear from you Vini. Hope all is well. For the past 4-5 yrs we hunted south of Gas Bugy but with more hunters than deer it was challeging. Saw deer but nothing legal.
How big were the bigs bucks? I heard alot of roads are closed now!? Thanks for the input Vini. Most likely we are going to hunt in this area (lower part of the unit) UNLESS otherwise there is some other spots that might hold some deer.

I am talking like if this unit is not the best in the state. HUNT HARD...right. Any help is always appreciated.
Thanks Vini. I will send you some pics when I get the BIG BOY heare on the rez.

Thanks lionking

A friend from Gallup was there for the MZ hunt for his two sons and had a rough time . The migration hadn't started and theres just not alot of resident deer there in Sept. , BUT , there has been some wintery type weather the last fews weeks on and off and my brother said he's seen more deer in there now . My brother lives in Aztec and services the pump jacks through out unit 2 , so he's there every day . Gas Buggy is real good once snow pushes them across 64 into the sage brush flats into that area , but that won't be till some heavier snows hit southern CO . I'd hunt up around Caracas off the road at the top were it forks , the bucks should be in there and the rifle hunt up at the top has alot of road hunters driving around looking to get lucky . Cabresto canyon would be another good area , east or west , but I like east side going into the canyon , the road goes alittle ways back , but then you can get into some rough thicker stuff , but its great muley country . And then if theres hunters simply driving all the roads , Bancos is a real good area to the northwest , theres no roads , just a nice horse trail that is easy to walk back aways a couple miles , still in great country the wholw way . It should be a great hunt , I think 2B is by far the very best trophy unit in NM , SO CONGRATS ON A GREAT TAG....hope this helps some ....NMHUNTNUTT

Thanks for the input. I think that unless by some miracle we get a dump of snow....we will be hunting in north of 64. Thank you again. Is the horse trail your talking about noticiable cause I like to hunt off the roads.

LIONKING ,once you cross the arroyo at Bancos , turn left right away , its the only turn , drive down the road , it only goes another couple hundred yards and then dead ends , but theres enough room to turn a truck and horse trailer around in . The trail is right there , ya can't miss it . I walked it maybe a mile or so and then hunted to the south or left of the canyon wall , but man , there was deer EVERYWHERE ,just couldn't ever get into bow range and get an arrow drawn , but seeing bucks all afternoon kept it fun ......NMHUNTNUTT

I drew that tag a few years ago. Shoot me a private email. I have a couple of suggestions.

Hey NMHUNTNUTT1!! Thanks for the help. I will definatley check out the area. I am trying to find out where on the map it is. THank you

Just got back from the first hunt, took a real nice 4x4. I can lead you in a few directions if you need some help. Shoot me a PM and we can talk. The weather has been horrible but a front slid in yesterday morning so thing may be changing.

How did you hunt go?
Me and my dad bagged a pair of bucks...a 5x5 and a 4x4, nothing impressive but the only legals we saw. We got them at the same time. Anyone else with any luck?

We had some good luck we took 6 deer all 4X4's or better but nothing real big all in the northern part of the unit during the first 5 day hunt. We saw a lot of bucks but the bruisers are still out there. It is safe to say that the migration is full swing because I must have seen close to 300 deer with lots of forkhorns in the groups. The bucks we took were for the most part traveling solo. The weather was I think a little too good as it was clear throughout the hunt but everyon in our group had a good time. Good luck to all

My Godbrother shot a nice buck 3x4. We missed a nice one the next morning. We had a good time. Thanks for the info. I will post some pics.
