LAST EDITED ON Oct-31-05 AT 03:33PM (MST)[p]Here are some photos of a nice buck I took last Sunday on the second day of our hunt. I shot him right at daybreak at 120 yards. I used a .30-06 loaded with Federal Premium High Energy 180 gr Nosler Partitions. He went down at the first shot. His outside spread is 26.25". I haven't green-scored him yet but several friends think he might go 180+. I really don't care about the B&C score because the rack and cape are at the taxidermist already.

Thanks for the compliments on the buck. Not bad for a 1st post, huh?

We each had a cow tag and an OTC bull tag in addition to our buck tag but we didn't see any elk at all. I saw a few decent bulls and a couple of cows at the game processors, but they guys who got them wouldn't fess up the location. We thought they probably got them in the Piceance Wilderness area as that is the only area anyone had seen any elk last week. GMU 21 is primarily a deer area, so if we picked up any elk we would have considered that icing on the cake. We each used four preference points to draw the buck tag, so we were strictly deer hunting. If we happened to see an elk while we were looking for bucks, we were going to consider that a bonus. Considering the buck I was lucky enough to get, I was more than happy to come home with two un-filled elk tags!

Did you use an outfitter? Do you have they're number if you did

I wish I could afford an outfitter. I am an active duty MSgt in the USAF and they don't pay us that much! I just went up with another guy I'm stationed with here at Peterson AFB CO. We have been hunting here in CO for the last four seasons and we always seem to get something in the freezer.

Not a bad first post at all! You can add me to the list of folks who like the dark color of his antlers. I wouldn't worry about what he scores either - he's really good - that's enough!

Sorry for bugging you again, but I've been considering this area as a place to burn my 6 points in, and would you recommend this area for an old timer with limited mobility or is it pretty rugged. Are there any area's that you'd suggest starting out in?

Thanks much

LAST EDITED ON Nov-01-05 AT 12:44PM (MST)[p]I couldn't stand not knowing what the buck scored so I went to the taxidermist with a friend from work and we green scored my buck.

Gross: 177 5/8

I would HIGHLY recommend this area to someone with limited mobility. Around 95% of the land is public and there is excellent access from the numerous roads in the area. The altitude is under 6000 ft, so if you're a flatlander, the lack of oxygen won't be as big a problem as the high mountain hunts.

Spend your points - you won't be disappointed.

(Send me an email & will let you know the places we hunted.)
