LAST EDITED ON Aug-10-09 AT 01:20PM (MST)[p]We found these bad boys while they were looking for some "Bad Girls"..........but after trying for a half hour, I can't send the photo.

Better not given up. I want to see some Lone Pine elk.

Nickman, if I can attach a photo anyone can!!

Have you tried putting them in photo bucket and then copy and pasting that little url??

Yeah, and this site says it was uploaded.....but I guess it went to the Enterprise.

PM me a email and I will send it to you.

Here is nickman's picture of Tule elk in the Owens Valley.

That could be a picture on the cover of a calendar. Actually, it would be the coolest calendar cover I ever seen.

Alright Nickman- what's the scoop?

seems you had a good weekend..

Them are some good ones? What do you think that biggy to the left scores? I see 6x8? how about B&C or PY?

Thanks again for your help, advise and time. Your knowledge has helped me a ton.

Hope to see you up there soon.

By the way, how did the first weekend of the Owens hunt go?

Take care,

Mark

We are still playing with them.

The RMEF auction tagholder shot a 300 plus, I hear.....nothing in this herd is close to that, but we have seen three with easy 300 plus racks and a couple dozen with Pope & Young "gear".

There is no hurry and he has the whole valley, so not to rush it.

Actually, the largest bull in this bunch is a 7x7 with a double browtine on the left. He has not presented a clear shot even though my guy has been at 40 yards on him twice.

We'll probably pass and let El macho take him, since it is in his unit!

Probably have looked at 60 shooters in 21 days, blown a couple stalks and almost got stepped on! It has been a hoot and there are plenty of bulls to go around.

Will keep you posted, now that I "snivveled" enough to get NMPaul to post my photos!

I spoke with a CA. Dept. of Fish and Game warden two years ago about the Owens Valley Tule Elk and the propensity for them to break antlers. He told me they lack sufficient minerals in their diet to develop strong antlers. And, the slightest sparring between bulls causes breakage. The antlers are just too brittle.

True story.

They are not native to this area and although they have adapted VERY well, the feed here does not have a high enough copper variant, so the antlers are weakend.

DFG could fix it in one generation, but they will not supplement the diet with mineral block.

In the areas where cattle are supplemented, the elk racks are near normal. I have seen them eat the paper wrapper off the block.

Everyone got that. What nickman is saying is. If you draw a late season bull tag, make sure you drop a few mineral blocks out there in the summer time. ;)
