We went 2 for 2 on the first hunt this year. Lots of young bucks (spikes and forkies). The hunting pressure seemed to me to be the same or worse. It did snow (10-12 inches)last year during the second hunt.
We had at least 15" of snow last year. In general, it's probably one of the worst units to hunt if you want anything big, but it's fun and my second home, so we keep going back.
Road hunting is a national past time in New Mexico, btw. For many families, its tradition goes back many generations.
Like most places, it depends on the size and management of the ranch. Relatively speaking, there are better bucks on the private land, but for the money, I'd hook it to CO, WYO, or Montana.
last year the weekend of the 12th got lots of snow and it was cold. my wife and i went down there for the weekend (not to hunt, just to enjoy that area of the state). cruising up towards the ski basin we saw lots of doe and one spike. so far, it doesn't look like ruidoso will get much moisture this weekend. that's some beautiful country. enjoy yourself and good luck!
I could be wrong , but I think its about 50 miles all together, from 82 to 244 up to 70 , but its kind of whindy roads in a few places so you got to slow down , but its a little over an hours drive .....Some rough country but some nice deer....NMHUNTNUTT
Mayhill is about 20 miles to Cloudcroft, then it's about another 40 miles to Ruidoso, so it does take about 1- 1.5 hours, going throught the Apache Reservation. Ruidoso is not unit 34, however.
I saw a super nice buck during my cow elk depredation hunt in Ocotober. About 5 miles east of sunspot. Only about 21", but super heavy and real long tines.
