spread measuring question?

on a mule deer do you measure the spread from the widest inside measurement of tines or simply the widest inside measurement of main beams like a whitetail? i'm unsure. heard both.
 
I'm not 100% sure either, but I'll bet it is the inside spread of the main beam only. Otherwise you could get some wild measurements that could really jack up a score... I know that is how you score the spread measurement on elk ..
 
Widest point you can find in the center of the main beams. It can be taken anywhere that is the widest point, including clear to the beam tips, if that was the widest point. It must also be perfectly horizontal and perpendicular to the axis of the skull, so if your beams are on different planes, you would have to drop a straight edge and take the measurement from there (that's the complicated version).
 
so if in the middle of the beam, you had tines on both sides that went at an angle outwards, that would be the widest point of the spread?
 
click this link... look at figure B and measurement D for the inside. The lines going up and down show how to measure the greatest width.
