I need help guys. Most of you may think this is crazy but my friend wants me to help him on his Supertag hunt in montana in September. He wants me to get good at calling elk in a month. We have grown up hunting together and when it comes to calling that always seem to be my job. So now I need to learn how to bugle and cow call in a month. I need all your suggestions (other than get a guide) for calls and videos.

It doesn't take too long to learn to make the right noises, but it takes years to learn how to use them.

My advice is to have someone along that at least has basic knowledge of what he's doing.

Slams right. Anybody can learn to make the noises but there is a certain art to knowing when to use what noise. It sounds like it may be a matter of trial and error, but just like anybody else, at first it's probably going to be more error. I'm not sure I would chance that on a super tag. That would NOT be my choice for learning the ropes.

It's always an adventure!!!

once you start to make the right sounds then have someone else listen and make sure that you are making the right sound it will sound different to you then to them. hiper lip sing and double are good calls and the red green and white daiphram calls from primos it took me tree to four years to get good and countless bulls being blown out of the country in those years the first year I started to call I think I seen 15 bulls and didnt have one even aknowledg that he even herd a call so good luck

The Macdaddy from HS Wayne Carlton calls is the best sounding easiest to blow elk call on the market. It will make good solid cow calls too. Get you a fighting cow call too the little green one as it is the one I have killed 100's of bulls with. Get the good videos that show how some of us use the calls. The Primetime bulls series and #6 #7 are solid videos to learn elk sounds and how to make them. There are a dozen good calls out there to choose from but pick a few and learn them well before the hunt....I like the diaphram the most but it can be the toughest to learn I have been callin for 26 yrs and I still am learnin. Good luck. Al.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-12-09 AT 10:19PM (MST)[p]I have been told all you have to do is get two hoochie mamas and squeeze them as fast as you can when you see or hear a bull bugle. then add in a mouth call and you will sound like a heard of cows in heat. It also wouldn't hurt to poor a bottle of cow in heat on you or your friends back.

seriously you will do fine if you just practice once a week possibly while driving to the store to get some groceries with your wife/girl friend if you got one. They can tell you if it sounds real or not.

you buddy will appreciate all the practice you get and he will also know you will be free for hunting cause if you blow that call in the car you will be single. lol

I haven't killed an elk with my bow so don't take my advise to seriously.

get the primos mastering the art elk dvd its awesome.also if you watch some of their elk dvds and pay attention to when and how much they are calling.chappell hunting productions has some great dvds where you can hear elk noises and the calls. not just music.like has been said being a good elk caller takes lots of time in the woods.one thing rookies do is overcall that will end the party real quick. as for bugling i just make a very small sounding bull bugle to locate.very easy to do on primos terminator or pack bugle.get primos "top pin" diaphram single reed and very easy to make cow calls with.
hope that helps
good luck with the hunt

Go to this website and get all his videos on calling elk (not that expensive): http://www.elknut.com/

Don't expect to see actual hunting videos. In those you see 10% how to call and 90% hunting shots. In elknut videos, you get 100% how to call, what you are saying with each kind of call, and when to use which one. I learned more from his videos than all the other ones I had seen combined.

You won't be sorry.
