Well, opening day is getting closer and closer, I can't wait. 14 years of putting in for the strip has finally paid off. I've done a tremendous amount of scouting and research and will be leaving next Wednesday for my hunt that begins on Nov 11th. I wanted to check one last time to see if anyone would have any useful information for the hunt. It seems that this is going to be a hard hunt, as the weather hasn't moved any bucks down from Utah or from Kiabab. Even if I don't come back with a monster buck, I would have to state that this hunt has already been a success. First, just having the opportunity to hunt in our great country is satisfying. Second, the wife finally broke down and I was allowed to finally purchase some damn good optics, Swarovski 10X42's.

If anyone would be willing to talk with me, it would be much appreciated.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-04-05 AT 07:21AM (MST)[p]Have a great hunt. I have hunted 13B but not A. You don't see as many deer as you would on the Kaibab but the bucks you see can be huge. People have told me Mt. Trumbel is good.
Great to have those Swarovski's. You will put them to great use.

Good luck on the hunt. If you have scouted you know it can be a tough unit. Make sure you take a bunch of gas, a couple extra spare tires and some tire chains. The chains can come in handy in the mud if you are lucky enough to get some moisture. Nothing in the current forecast but could happen before the end of the hunt. I have seen better bucks this year than in the past five years coming out of the unit; this is a great year for a tag. Hunt hard and enjoy the hunt. Sounds like you have already enjoyed the unit. Big country ? Big deer. Have a fun time and let us know how you do when you get back.

Again, good luck

Deer don't move in to this unit from 12w or from utah except around Colo city. This unit has some real big bucks, try to get as far from the roads as you can. Also wait for a big buck to move onto the does as they will be starting to rut very good, and you may see a new buck anyday.I have seen bucks over 230 in this unit, and it has been getting better every year.I have not seen the boomers that I have seen on the B side, but there are still big bucks.

Can't help with any hunt info , but wanted to say congrats on a great tag and best of luck to you . I'm glad your enjoying it so far , hope you find and connect on a great muley. Becareful , have fun and take a couple cameras and lots of pictures.....NMHUNTNUTT

Thank you guys for wishing me the best of luck, I have my sights set high, so upon my return, I hope to have a 200+ class buck and some pictures to share.

DeerCrazy, I got your PM (thank you) and will contact you, I'd love to talk with you.

When I went scouting I saw a very respectable 4 point typical that I would take on day 4 or 5, his back forks were deep and tall, I'm guessing around 20 inches with some decent mass. His front forks were approximately 10 inches, but were lacking some mass. His inside spread was around 24-26 inches, all and all; I would score him around the 160-175-class range. My goal is to come home with a buck that will make the books; I'd really love to come home with a buck that has trash! I'm talking about a 6X7 monster or bigger. I'm looking for some incredible kickers! (I guess I'm dreaming out loud)

I've been working with a family member of mine who worked for Game and Fish for many years and he has a three ring binder full of information on most prime hunts for Deer and Elk. His job was to transport water to the various water catchments for wildlife, so with his data, I should do well. As I stated earlier, I'm getting a little worried about the current weather conditions and I do believe that a lack of snow will make this a hard hunt.

One thing is for certain; I will hunt hard, safe and smart.

Bucher, that's awesome that you drew such a great tag! I don't know if you remember, but we talked on the phone once upon a time regarding insurance. Anyways, if you get one be sure to post some pics.

Joel

Hey Joel,

I remember you, I wondered what happened, my wife and I were really into the quotes that you gave us. We did move and we were not available via phone for a while, so I apologize.

If you don't mind, give me a call some time to discuss the insurance thing and of course, hunting.

P.S, thanks for wishing me luck.
