Washington Late Permit Hunt

Well I am already back after one day. I think I was a little trigger happy. I am not used to seeing so many decent bucks like this in Washington. Anyway, I am pleased and he is a pretty nice buck. He has nice forks, good mass and almost 4" eyeguards. Here is the story.
I left yesterday morning for the 3 1/2 hour drive to the area I would be hunting. The passes were pretty dicey but I still made it.
On my drive in to the area I wanted to set up camp, I spotted a couple of nice 20" 4 points bedded down. I decided to set up camp at about 3,000 feet. Their was only a couple of inches of snow on the ground and it was just slightly overcast with some blue skies.
I set up camp and then headed out about 11:00 AM or so. I drove down a rode for a few miles until I came to an old forest service road without any other traffic on it. At this point there was approximately 6" of snow on the ground. I walked down the road just a few hundred yards to the next draw and spotted a decent buck about 500 yards out. I kept walking and glassing and spotted three more bucks all about the same size. Most had some does with them and were rutting pretty hard.
I walked around another corner to another draw and saw a pretty nice buck about 500 yards away. He didn't see me so I tried to get closer. I ended up about 300 yards above him on an old landing. I was able to get a good rest and decided to take the shot. I aimed just above his back the first shot but I think I shot over him. He just stood there and didn't move. I forgot to realize that when shooting down hill, you are supposed to aim low. Since my gun was approximately 10-12" low at 300 yards I decided to aim directly on the shoulder. At the second shot, he jumped and kicked and ran about 20 yards and nose dived into the snow and he was dead.
There was a old lower road beneath him I was able to take the Jeep within a couple of yards of him.
After I got him back to camp it really started to snow. In the hour or so it took me to skin him and cut him up it had snowed about 3" and my tent was getting pretty hammered. I decided to pack up camp and get off the mountain. I finally made it home last night about 10:30 and the passes were again pretty bad.
I guess this morning they closed I90 west as their was another rockslide.

I also want to thank Ridgerunner, Muleyslyr, Ansolynn, Icicleoutfitters, duckfvr and wawantamonster for their help in pointing me in the right direction. This was definitely the spot to be this year for the deer with all the snow that is over there.
This sight is great and the people are friendly and very helpful. I know I wouldn't be as successful with hunting without the knowledge and help these people give.
Thanks again.

Thanks for the comment. Yeah he is a pretty buck.
I know, nobody likes to see the blood in the pics but I was by myself and I only had one stump I could set the camera on and use the timer.

Congratulations! Great looking buck, nice long tines and very symettrical. Best part was you didn't even have to camp out in the snow!

That's a nice buck! I miss late season permit hunting in this state - I haven't drawn a permit since '99 for the Quilomene. I'm due next year (fingers crossed).

Congrats on the deer!

Luke....congrats, that's a nice buck man. What perfect conditions up there for ya. Wish I could've been up there again.

Man that was quick! Nice buck, he is pretty. Let us know what he scores out at. Sounds like you were in the spot this year! Glad it all worked out for you.

Yeah that was quick. I just couldn't hold out. It is my best deer yet so I am not at all disappointed. I am just thinking I had the right time to hunt and maybe I should have waited a few days.
I did some rough scoring and it is a little less than 160. Not a bad Washington buck.
Thanks again Brian.

That is a great buck in any state at any time!! Thanks for sharing. Nice job going solo on the photos. That is always a challenge and you did well. Again, congratulations on a very solid buck.
Doc

Congrats on a nice buck. He has good mass, and I love his eye guards. He is a good looking buck. Nice job!

Nice deer. That area looks fairly familiar. The snow makes all the difference in the world over there.

Congrats on a great looking buck! Nothing wrong with being trigger happy... all that matters that when you pull the trigger and you know you're gonna be happy!

Just curious...is the auction hunter disabled, partially blind, or in some other way unable to find his own buck?

I have a late permit for the Pogue unit and saw a nice big mature buck last weekend while hunting. I put the spotting scope on it and judged it to be about 26" wide with about 10" forks on the front with slightly shallower on the back and good height and mass. The only problem was that it was on a steep incline from my position and ranged it at 403 yds without a rock solid rest. I passed on it with hope to approach it later from another direction at closer range on this remote mountain. The next day I came in from the other side and saw alot of deer including 5 bucks on the 2 hour hunt but didn't see the one I was looking for. The migratory deer aren't in the winter range yet so I pulled out on Sunday and headed home. I am heading back on Friday to hunt for the duration of the season hoping the migratory deer will start coming in when I get there. If undisturbed, there's a good chance that buck will still be there. There is only 4 other permits besides mine in this area so, I'm hoping to find him again. Anyway, I'm hoping to get a trophy buck there whether it's him or a different one. I'm holding out for a big one. I'll let you know how it turns out when I get back.

BuckBlaster,

Can't wait to see pics. There have been some very nice bucks taken this year, muleys and blacktail. With the weather we are having it will only get better. Glad to here you are holding out. Good luck and take lots of field photo's.

Those burn areas sure are productive! How many years did you put in before getting drawn? Real quality buck, no second guessing, you made right decision.

I had 5 points and drew as a second choice but this was my first time puttin in for this unit. I normally put in for the Winthrop / Twisp area units.
Thanks for the comment.

You bet, good to know about the second choice, I've only been picking one option on the application. I'm sitting on five points now too. Never hunted Winthrop area, but stayed at a lodge there this Fall and took photo's of a couple dozen bucks, mostly on private, but some pretty decent. I hunted Mission unit this year for general, but didn't get out often -just got married and bought a new house.
