This is the deer I took on a NM deer hunt. The buck was taken on the first day of the hunt. My dad and I decided to walk an old road and look for some deer. The road was near a water tank that we had seen some sign the day before. So the opening day we decided to take a walk. We had walked about 1/2 a mile before spotting a doe in some brush. While looking for other deer we spotted the buck about 3/4 of a mile behind the doe. While watching the buck he bedded down. We decided the best way to get to him. The wind was blowing from left to right and the buck was facing to our right in front a big brush. As we were getting closer to the buck we couldnt tell if he was a legal buck. So we had to move closer for a better look. We had closed the distance to about 200 yards before we got a look at a third point, but still no shot because of the brush he was bedded in. So we had to get closer the buck never knew that we were there. We had got within 20 yards of the deer when a yellow belly bird jumped between the buck and I. The buck quickly stood up and took a couple of leaps and I shot but missed the first shot then followed it up with a second shot that found its mark. Not the biggest deer but a good buck for the freezer.
