Kaibab

Anyone been up to the Kaibab lately? I was curious if the rut has kicked in yet?

My sources say very little rutting activity at this time.
It looks like we are going to be cursed with warm weather for the late hunts. Thats going to make it a bit tougher I think.
The deer are scattered all over. My source was on the doe hunt there and came home today. They only went one for two on does, butthey were able to pass on some teriffic information about a couple of boomer bucks. I'll be following up on the tale for a couple of days to see if I can pin down what my snitch called a 35" plus, multi-pointed pig!

Thanks for the info, I am heading up there tomorrow. Good luck to you on the monster.

Sorry guys but since I drew this late Kaibab tag along with the rest of you, you're all going to have to put up with "Jim's Deer Hunting Curse."

JDHC ensures that the hunt will have record high temps, a glorious full moon, and the presence of bedeviling swirling winds. The hunt will come on the heels of unusually high tag numbers for earlier hunts in the same unit. In addition, the rut will come curiously late, not getting underway until at least 24 hours after the last day of the season. Hopefully the part of the curse about frustrating vehicle breakdowns will mecifully passover this year...but then again, maybe not, so spare parts of just about everything that can burst, break, leak, or fall off needs to be packed in the back of the truck.

Oh well, at least we're going to eat good. Have a big pot of my special recipe chili simmering on the stove right now getting it ready to freeze and pack for the hunt.Mmmmm it's good!

What's that?...OMG, after a huge ruckus in the kitchen my wife tells me my Labs just knocked the pot of chili onto the floor and are greedily lapping it up! Looks like it's gonna be one of those years....

Hey bigoltom,

Send me a PM before you head up there if you can. I just returned from 13A 10 mins ago and can give you a quick run down of what I've been seeing and how the weather is acting.

Good luck to you guys with the late tag. The early hunt was tough, which is kinda normal. Hopefully you guys can find a good buck. Post some pics no matter what happens, Good Luck!

It's been my experience over the last twenty years or so, that the wind on the West side of the Kaibab tends to blow from a South Westerly direction.
Jim, if you're going to load up on chilli, could you please find a spot in the far North East end of the unit to spend your time. Thank you! LOL!

I'll keep that in mind!

JDHC update...

Record high temps expected today in spots throughout the southwest. As I type these words, we are having 35-50MPH gusts. A large salt cedar went down in my yard early this morning, dust and blown sand are blasting the side of my warehouse. It's going to be one of those years...just like it was way back in 1990, the last time I had a Kaibab tag. 44 hours until departure, can't wait!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-15-05 AT 03:08PM (MST)[p]Bucksnort, headin out scoutin right now. If I spot a tasty youg meat buck do you want me to tie him up for ya? Chili and fresh liver would be good while sun bathing on the banks of Kanab Creek. Bring sunscreen.

Jim,
My brother and I had the same Kaibab tag in 1990. It seems we have a habit of drawing the same deer tags. 1990 Kaibab,
1999 Pauns, 2005 Kaibab. I suspect this will be my last Kaibab though. I doubt I'll live long enough to draw it again. That's the reality of it, so I think I'll savor the moment.
And if all goes well, maybe even have a crack at a special buck.
I'll be packing a well tuned remington 721 that my grandpa bought in the late 30's, maybe early 40's. He passed the gun to my father and I'll one day pass it on to the next generation. I have other rifles that I think are better suited for the probable long distance shooting the Kaibab offers, but somehow, packing the gun that was passed down three generations seems to be the right choice for this hunt. I've got a good feeling about it. Well see...
I don't mind the dry weather, but for hell sakes, keep the wind South of the Grand Canyon.

conch,

I did notice that irony of us drawing the same tags...kinda weird. It's still blowing here, at times really hard gusts. Came home to 8 cottonwood limbs in my front yard to go along with the downed salt cedar.

I too really enjoy hunting with vintage firearms. I thought of taking an old Savage 99 in .300 Savage along for the hunt and carry it when I prowl around in the thick stuff. Thought better of it as the rifle is in too good of condition and it will have to wait until my daughter's cow elk hunt in December. I'm going to carry the same rifle I hunted with in 1990, a battered Winchester 70 in .270 Winchester with a hand painted kevlar stock. It has tan and grey-green speckled zebra stripes at the moment. Ugly but functional.

fin,

I do have a tube of #35 sun block, a couple pairs of cargo shorts, and some camo dove hunting tee shirts packed in case accuweather.com is on the money and we're all gonna be hunting in tropical conditions. Well, at least for November that is. I'm going to take my Dad out and get him in a nice spot overlooking some good country and then set up the tripod and glass and go to work and see if we can't find a good buck. Like everyone, I'd like to tag as big a buck as is out there. Hopefully, I'll see one with some character to his rack and a weathered look to his old gray face. That will be good enough for me.

Hate the idea that this could be the last go around in that country with a rifle, but at the rate of 15 year waiting periods between tags, I'll be over 60 the next time. That's sobering. You never know, I just might draw the Strip in '06 with only 2 BP's.

My Dad's rolling out in the AM, I'll follow the next day. You all be careful and enjoy yourselves. Good luck!

Jim
